Trump says country faces ‘bloodbath’ if Biden wins in November
impulse replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Interesting that Trump was really talking about a bloodbath for the US auto industry when addressing tariffs on Chinese imports assembled in Mexico. But the lefty media carrying water for the Dems makes it into something else completely. "Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you're building in Mexico right now and you think you're going to get that, you're going to not hire Americans and you're going to sell the cars to us? No. We're going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you're not going be able to sell those cars. If i get elected. Now, if I don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole -- that's gonna be the least of it. It's going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it." https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2024/03/16/trump_if_i_dont_get_elected_its_going_to_be_a_bloodbath.html- 630 replies

Up to 5.8 million U.S. kids have long COVID, study says
impulse replied to TallGuyJohninBKK's topic in COVID-19 Coronavirus
Here's an honest, though admittedly very pointed question about the studies. Did they break out the victims to differentiate between long Covid and long Vax? Because my symptoms started the day after my 2nd Pfizer and over a year before I got Covid. So color me cynical if they don't break it down. -

Other than Dems, does anyone think it's a good idea to let S. American gang members into the country unvetted? With Haitian gangs to follow? Not hard to forecast blood in the streets when the "newcomer" gangs fight it out with each other, and with the indigenous gangs. -
He needs to send you some photos with the lights out. Some of the cooling systems could double as light shows. Gotta admit, I'm not a gamer. Never have been. As a consequence, I cut my computer costs by half, buying last year's CPU. If I paid double for this year's, I'm still behind the 8 ball in 6 months or so. With fingers crossed that my socket will accept next year's CPU.

IMO, he's right. But I'd add these 2: 1) Don't come to Thailand and try to make it just like back home. Not until you understand why things operate the way they do. And you never will. 2) If you hate all things Thai and the Thai people, do yourself a favor and live somewhere else. It'll be doing all of us a favor, but especially your ulcer.

Israeli woman detained in Thailand for unauthorised nursery
impulse replied to webfact's topic in Koh Samui News
I'd be curious to hear from someone who has gone through that process. How high are the hurdles? I know in some countries I've worked in, the cost of licensing a daycare is so high that it's not a viable stand-alone business. The multi-national companies have to subsidize (and provide legal services for) the daycare, so they can attract the talent they need to operate. -

That's my question. Would it have been possible for them to get licensed and WP'ed up? Or is child care a Thai only occupation? Because it's gonna be tough to attract foreign companies if you're not going to allow them to care for and educate their employees' kids to their own countries' standards. For most parents of small kids, child care is a make or break factor for deciding whether to accept a foreign posting. Edit: And whether it's just a formality or not, please take me out back and put me out of my misery if I get petty enough to scream for anyone's deportation just for WP violations. -
Florida is swamped by disease outbreaks as quackery replaces science
impulse replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Of course that's what a Dem city spokesperson would say. 'Cause they want Biden re-elected. And the MSM article claims that the cases have been in police stations. But you have to read real hard to see where they mention that those police stations are being used to shelter migrants. As CBS 2 has reported, police stations across the city have been serving as shelters for asylum seekers -- including the 25th District. Here's a more honest article: Eight people living at a Chicago shelter for migrants have tested positive for measles since last week... Ten infections total have been reported in the city since Thursday, which the Chicago Department of Public Health said was the first instance of measles detected locally since 2019. Two of the cases — an adult and a child — were not shelter residents. https://apnews.com/article/measles-chicago-migrant-shelter-cdc-e58517c830f73e42266d45d45983c12b But don't blame the migrants because that won't fit the narrative... And it's an election year. Edit: You'd have to be a Dem to not see the political slant here. -

I don't think there's a recommended vaccine for leprosy. From the link: In addition, vaccine technology to combat leprosy is in the clinical trials stage and could become available in coming years. So you can't blame that one on vaccine hesitancy. And it's not surprising that any outbreak would be in Florida, where the only zoonotic reservoir, are affectionately referred to as "possum on the half shell". In fact, anywhere in the south, where armadillos are abundant and Bidenomics has forced people to eat whatever they could hunt up. (Okay, that was a solicitous dig... My bad) But I've read a bunch of articles and seen a few videos on the right wing blogosphere about people cutting their grocery bills by hunting. https://thefrugalite.com/save-money-by-hunting/ https://www.foxnews.com/video/6348505464112 -

Interesting that Chicago is having a measles outbreak. And you have to read almost the whole article to find out it's happening in migrant shelters. Wonder who the MSM is gonna blame for that? Probably Abbott, for busing a few migrants to Chicago. https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/apparent-measles-outbreak-inside-chicago-police-district/ -
I need a new Computer – But not a Laptop – Any advice .
impulse replied to tomgreen's topic in IT and Computers
I think that's the key to quality. Look for a stack of the same model, indicating they probably all came from the same company. Also, look for the asset sticker that many companies slap on their PC's. -

I ditto that ref: Mini PC's. I've had great luck with mine, which is a Voyo brand. In other words, an off brand. Bought it for my GF's father who was living in a retirement home with minimal space for a PC. He kept it in a drawer and plugged it into the HDMI of his big screen TV when he used it. It worked great for him for years, and for us since he passed about a year ago. But if money's tight, I'd look into a 2nd hand PC from one of the IT malls like Fortune Town, the old Pantip Plaza (is it still there?) and some in Chinatown. I'm sure every city in Thailand has one... For less than half the price of a new one, with specs that more than match today's entry level PC's. For example, an 8th generation I7 will match a 13th generation I3 for benchmark speed. Then you just need to make sure it'll take the desired OS. For example, my 8 year old Asus won't take Win11, but the more I read about Win11, the less sad that makes me. It's still plenty fast and very stable. Caveat: Don't go too old lest you end up with serial ports and old timey video instead of HDMI. Unless, like me, you have a real old printer or plotter that needs a serial or parallel port. In my case, a cutting plotter. -
British and American men arrested for real estate violations
impulse replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
True. I recall a few years back, they proposed allowing some foreign land ownership in order to attract high wealth individuals and foreign companies. As I recall, it was limited to a small yard to build a residence. Not farmland, and it was tied to investment that benefitted Thailand. But I'm pretty sure that went nowhere. -

Foreigners can own up to 49% of shares in a registered company that can own land. Americans can own 100% of a registered company that can own land (under the Treaty of Amity) But the companies have to be properly registered and the owned land can only be used for specified purposes. So it's not that black and white... -
British and American men arrested for real estate violations
impulse replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I can't count the posts over the years from foreigners lamenting that they have to "give" someone 51% of their company to be legal. I had many foreign vendors who had successfully operated in Thailand for years and never "gave" anyone any shares. They did have Thai investors, who were often great partners with important contacts. There's a ton of Thai money looking for investment opportunities. If you can't find any Thais willing to invest 51%, you're either not talking to the right Thai people, or your idea probably isn't that good. -

Not so simple when there are a lot of lawyers, Thai included, who make their living setting up dodgy companies that skirt the laws. If you can't trust your lawyer to keep you legal... -
That's what I did in Bangkok and also here in China. Breakfast sausage and Italian. I'd suggest taking any recipe list to the Nguan Soon spice shop near the MRT in Chinatown, Wat Mangkon station. One stop for almost any spice you may need. Amazing shop, a gem in Bangkok. https://www.nguansoon.com/index.php?page=about&lang=_en I'd mix up a pint jar of whatever dry spice recipe I liked (Cumberland and Italian for me) and then it was quick and easy to buy a kg of ground meat, mix it up (adding a little wine), and cook. I didn't bother with casings. I'd only have to mix up the recipe once for half a dozen batches of sausage, because that was the PITA part. Then it was just about as easy to mix up a batch as it was to thaw out some ready made sausages. Which never seemed as fresh (or maybe they used preservatives?). Edit: I also make my own pickles with spices from the same shop, and some wine or apple vinegar. I love bread and butter pickles, and they were very hard to find in Bangkok.

Trump is ‘Unhinged’ But We Love Him, Say Kremlin Mouthpieces
impulse replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Yeah. 'Cause the Kremlin mouthpieces know the best way to get Trump re-elected is to say they support him. In bizzaro world maybe... Never has there been a better left handed endorsement of Biden. By the Kremlin. Ponder that for a few seconds. Gotta wonder, why did Putin take Crimea on Obama's watch, take Donbass on Biden's and stay pretty quiet during Trump's? -
Using my own background as an example, 20% of engineering graduates are female. 13% of practicing engineers are female. If a bunch of companies decide to hire 50% female engineers, some of them are going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel. If it's even possible at all to fulfill a 50% quota. That's not mysogyny. That's numbers. Since 2012, the number of women studying engineering has remained virtually the same. According to a 2019 report from the United States Census Bureau, female engineers represent only about 13% of the total engineering workforce. While women make up about 20% of engineering graduates, Harvard Business Review reported that 40% of women who received an engineering degree either never enter the profession or quit. https://www.thomasnet.com/insights/where-are-america-s-women-engineers/

It would be cheaper to let them take the car. Several hundred thousand dollars cheaper, according to Massad Ayoob, who is an expert witness at many self defense trials. And has a great YouTube channel for gun aficionados. He states that a self defense by firearm defense case starts at $100K and goes up from there. Even if the cops don't charge the shooter, the burglar's family will likely sue. I have quite a few self defense guns, and I hope I never have to use one in anger. I certainly won't in defense of property. Just in defense of life. My car's insured. Conceptually, I agree with you. But from a pragmatic standpoint, I'd leave my keys exactly where a burglar would be likely to find them. For most families, that's on a hook or a table in the foyer by the front door.

Maybe the corporate jet is a Boeing? -
So if someone breaks into your house looking for car keys, you'd prefer they come into your bedroom to beat the crap out of you to find the keys? Personally, I'd rather put the keys on a hook just inside the door so they leave me and my loved ones alone. That's very different from leaving them in the car or leaving the windows open, which invites theft. Their advice doesn't invite theft. Just mitigates the risk to life when someone does break in. It's the same as telling purse snatch victims to let go of the purse. Is what's in that purse worth risking your life over? Is your car worth risking your life over?

I wonder how many real estate transactions will be unwound, costing unsuspecting foreigners $$ millions. I also wonder whether they're genuinely trying to clean it up, or just steer the money to the right parties.- 252 replies
