Being an American, I refer to "white man's guilt" when I see how many US criminals are released as some kind of atonement for perceived past injustice. That in spite of FBI statistics that clearly show some demographics need to be incarcerated at higher rates simply because they commit more crime per Capita. I assume the Brits have a similar collective feeling of guilt.

Is it really that stupid? If so, on the face of it, I can't help but wonder if there's a component of "white man's guilt" in those numbers.

I took the oath in 1988 and don't miss it at all. Except when I've been out dancing and that doesn't happen much at my age. Small price to pay for all the benefits. Not to mention saving over $300,000 I would have spent on booze, based on my pre-oath booze expenses, adjusted for inflation over the past 35 years. I don't recommend it for everyone, but if drinking is causing problems in your life, you have a drinking problem. One of those fortunate problems for which there is a simple solution. (Simple, maybe not easy.) I'd also say that if you need booze to make life interesting, you're not doing it right. But as long as the booze isn't causing problems, enjoy. And I mean that sincerely.

Get a can of WD40 to clean the asphalt off your car's finish before it sets up and gets harder to remove. Pay special attention to the lower running boards and down low where the asphalt sprays up from the tires. Clean it quickly and you won't drive around for months with tar spots. WD40 is not the absolute best stuff out there for the purpose, but it works quite well. We also used Johnson's Baby Oil (or any generic mineral oil) quite successfully. Mineral spirits (paint thinner, but not the real hot solvent in lacquer thinner) works, too. Of course, keep a few clean rags...

When your odds of being in the hospital with Covid this week are 1 in 120,000 and your odds of dying with Covid this week are 1 in 20,000,000, I'd say you're well over the "Information threshold" and into fear mongering.

In a population of 60 million, that's 0.00083% of the population being hospitalized WITH Covid in a week. No clue how many are being hospitalized FOR Covid, but I suspect it's a tiny minority of that 0.00083%. Extrapolating over a year, I like my odds when there's a 0.043% chance of being hospitalized WITH Covid this entire year. (That's a 1 in 2400 chance) Probably even lower for those who have no underlying health conditions that would send them to hospital where they'd be Covid tested in the first place. So I'm going to go on living my life, worrying about real threats like crazy drivers...

But I'm even more sure that King Charles, John Kerry and the other knobs that are negotiating our futures will never take on the insect based diet they have in mind for the rest of us. Somehow, I don't envision their staff planning their menus around sustainability. For me, give me a big slab of dead cow.
