New Chinese form of psychological torture rolled out in Thailand
Kinnock replied to Cameroni's topic in Political Soapbox
While that's a long list for ice cream, it looks fairly natural apart from the mono/diglycerides. But we don't eat ice cream for our health. -
Anthrax is not going to spread like Ebola or foot and mouth, and most cases are limited to people involved in animal slaughter or farming, but the fatality rate can be high if treatment is late, and there can be secondary cases years later if the spores are spread about. There was a famous case years ago where traditional shaving brushes made from animal hair caused an outbreak. So the local government officers will need to make sure the carcase and all byproducts are disposed of correctly. The source animal may have been bought on the cheap from over the border, so there may not be an issue with Thai cattle. My personal interest was because I was taught about Anthrax on my Public Health course aeons ago .... but I've never seen a real case as it's very rare in the West.

The 'Drama Addict' Facebook page is well known for getting news before the regular media, and the site is sometimes quoted on regular news programmes. And in this case his report was correct and beat the mainstream news by a day. The same FB page had reported about Anthrax cases in Laos near the border with Thailand last week. Not everything on Facebook is fake ..... nearly everything, but not all. It looks like an isolated cluster, but as other posters have mentioned, the spores last for many years, so could be an ongoing risk, especially as the 'village-style' slaughter practices may have been less than hygienic.

Reports today saying 247 contacts being treated as a precaution after the anthrax cases in Issan.

There's a report today on the very popular 'Drama Addict' Facebook page about the death of a cattle farmer in Mukdahan caused by Anthrax. I was aware of Anthrax in Lao, but I thought there'd been no cases in Thailand for years. But I can't find any reports of this current case in the news. Anyone heard anything about a recent Anthrax case in Thailand? I used to work in public health so was just interested in the reported outbreak.

I think the observations from the OP are just due to most Thai people's lack of confidence with English language. They just want you to move along in case you try to speak to them in a strange language. Even if you are fluent in Thai they will expect a communication challenge. But I've found a friendly smile helps a lot. Us falangs do tend to have an angry scowl and a blank 1000 yard stare as our natural demeanour .... perfected in our home countries where eye contact can cause trouble.

.... I meant the UK based pensioners who get the annual increases also cost the country money by receiving free NHS treatments. Whereas many Thailand based pensioners pay for private health insurance and receive no UK benefits so we save the UK money and have a frozen pension. And some also still have to pay UK tax if the supplement the tiny pension with UK based schemes. We get shafted both ways.

Has your girlfriend got a joke or ever said anything funny ever?
Kinnock replied to Chris Daley's topic in General Topics
Ah yes ..... she has the Thai 'Mr Bean' sense of humour and I often hear her laughing at Thai Facebook reels. She also jokes about some of things I do, especially if I'm being too serious. But in my experience Thai humour is more innocent than Western humour. We tend to make jokes at other people's expense, and accept hurtful comments just because they are supposed to be funny. When I visit friends and family back in the 'old country' I'm now struck by how cruel our humour can be. -
I've found ChatGPT to be a good tool for translation. Also handy to summarise lengthy reports, but you still need to check the original document as it can miss critical details as it has no real understanding of the context. For writing in my own language, the AI LLM drafts are too flowery and too full of errors to add real value. Only useful if you can't string a sentence together yourself. Also been using AI to analyse images to measure critical levels in a farming process, but it needs so many images for the training I'm not sure it's an economic option compared to HI (Human Intelligence). I believe that most of the AI industry has been fuelled by venture capital investors, and it's still looking for an economically viable use. Also feel the cost of energy and water consumed by the data centres, and the time and costs involved in training are not always being included in the evaluation of AI as these costs are covered by the venture capital investors - but when assessed by a traditional profit-led business, HI will come out on top .... especially in lower labour cost countries.

Ooh .... that's a nasty looking bite. I never bothered about spiders in Thailand as I didn't think the common ones in the house were a serious threat. Even those big scary looking Huntsmen are supposed to be harmless to us.

I think mine are too big to steal ... unless someone is looking for a pair of canoes

The issue that sparked the fit of road rage is a daily occurrence ..... when you exit the far right toll booth (usually EasyPass) there's a concrete barrier that forces you into the next lane, but despite the white lines in the left lanes directing the other drivers to the left, many drivers just go straight, forcing the 'EasyPass' driver on the right to brake to slot in behind the driver who's drifting into the right hand lane. It's a bad design of the toll booth exit roads, but most people have learned to check the nearside lane and adjust their speed to merge safely. In this case the BMW driver charged ahead and got caught between the truck and the concrete barrier. The initial cause is the common trait of Thai drivers to use brakes as a last resort. 1. Keep going 2. Flash your headlights 3. Crash 4. Seek revenge 5.Consider using brakes

UK: Gaza groups tell Muslims who to vote for ‘Allah sees everything’
Kinnock replied to Social Media's topic in World News
The two resident Islamophiles (or more likely one with two accounts) are trying too hard to state the outdated woke propaganda. The rest of us have eyes open. -

Since WW II there's been a law in the UK prohibiting political parties from wearing a uniform. This law should be applied to the Muslim dress-code as it's clearly a uniform (when viewed in the context of the UK where more practical clothing is the norm), and the muslim religion in the UK has clearly evolved into a political movement.- 33 replies

Preston - used to have a busy port, now only has students or the unemployed. -

Thank you for considered, informative reply .... and I guess you've never been to Bradford? But you would like to state just one benefit that mass immigration from muslim countries has brought to the UK? We know all about the negatives, the lack of integration, the high unemployment, the erosion of women's rights, the dilution of British culture and values, the grooming gangs etc, but I can't think of any positives, unlike the earlier diasporas from the Caribbean, India and Uganda, the current wave seems to be entirely negative, except in the eyes of the forum's two (or is it one with two accounts?) Islamophiles. -

Slowly but surely British culture is being wiped out. Our history, values, humour and religion are being over-written by a combination of Islamic culture and woke extremism. And unfortunately it's not the best of Islamic culture .... we're not getting the welcoming 'everyone is an honoured guest' culture of Oman, the style of Dubai, the wealth of Saudi Arabia or the energy of Egypt or Turkey .... we're getting the misogyny, filth and intolerance of the lowest class of Islam.- 110 replies

Agree with other posters - just use proper plastic guttering. And don't underestimate the volume of water from a roof in a monsoon storm - real gutters can cope with the flow, but shallower semicircular pvc pipe may overflow. Our house needed extra wide downpipes to cope with the run off from a large section of roof.
