"Boooohoooohooo....the elephant is the symbol of our nation...we need to protect it, it is sooo precious to us and...what? ...there are a few 1000 baht in this for me? Where is my gun, I'll kill that beast!"

I still can't figure out what is so cheap about Bangkok. Most people complain about the British pub prices throughout.
There are some dam_n good restaurants, with good food and drinks for low prices. Of course not DIRECTLY on Nana or Patpong.
So eat out in a nice (mostly Thai- frequented) place and hopp on to few drinks at the "usual" places...good and not overly expensive fun.
Ok. I'm hooked. Where are they?
Frankly, every time I have heard that and tried the suggestion I paid a pretty good chunk from my wallet.
But, I would like to be proven wrong.
My favorite f.e. is the Sortrel on Soi Narathiwas.
Found the atmosphere to be nice, the food to be good, the prices to be reasonable...
Another one would Khao Ta, directly on Thewes Pier.

I must agree with your statement, WHY do they continue to complain when there is always an aeroplane
And, indeed, it does begin. So very predictable.
Don't you think that it's a bit early to be crowing about best of anything for 2013. We are barely 40% into 2013.And so, let the predictable Thai bashing begin.
Actually, even after thirty-plus years of travel and living in Thailand ... and being fully aware of it's many flaws and warts ... I still very much love Thailand, it's culture and it's people.
Where does this garbage come from? who writes it?
And if this....The capital city of Thailand is known for its street food, entertainment, tuk-tuk tricycle taxis, shopping malls and the hospitality of people which draw a large number of tourists from overseas each year. Several foreign films featuring locations in Bangkok have also contributed to the rising fame.....is this the criteria? if it is you gotta be joking (holy sh!t someone might be serious)
I understand that some people don't like Thailand ... so be it. But what I find rather puzzling is how vile, vehement, and emotionally charged so many on TV get when expressing their dislikes and criticisms. And what totally mystifies me are the ones who continually do this and actually still choose to live here. Seems rather masochistic to me.
Ooooooh...and it only took us 16 posts to get to "If you don't like it...go home"!

I can't believe how hateful Thai people want to be! Staying with their own language, so a bunch of westerners don't have to pick up a book, or learn the nuances of a different language!
So...it seems that YOU are not able to understand anything, not even plain English.
I personally could not care less, if Thais speak English or not.
I am in their country and I try to do my best to learn their language and I find it very hard, so I am thankful if someone speaks English.
But this is not about me or some cranky farang.
It is about the Thais.
For all I care, they can stick to their language as long as they want!
Good luck for the ASEAN- community in 2015/16, though.
We will see the rise of the Isaan- bar girl!
All hail to them!

Just one more example:
I have a friend who lives with his Thai- wife and his two children (5,7) in Khao Lak.
They have a small bungalow- resort and the children interact with the guests freely.
Both children speak Thai and German as their mother(father) tongue.
They both start picking up English now, the older one (a girls) is already able to have a conversation in English, the boy is learning fast.
And guess what? Since the maids, who take care of the bungalows and the house ...and sometimes of the kids...are from Burma...they communicate with them in Burmese.
Last time I visited, the girl insisted to speak English with me, when she found out, that I could!
It is a lot about interest and encouragement!

Does any of you guys have pictures of the Million Beer Bottle temple?
I am doing a little article on "strange" temples for a friends web- site, but no one seems to have any decent pic of that temple.
Any chance here???
