  1. So, when a foreigner is in a situation where no english is spoken or understood and said foreigner has limited command of Thai and Isaan, what did those of you do before you had a such a high level of speaking Thai and Isaan under your belt. If you don't use what little you know, how will your command of a different language increase?

  2. Because it makes it a whole lot easier for Thais to understand you. Do you think fluent or near fluent English speakers massacre the language for fun?

It doesn't fill me with joy when a fluent Thai speaker decides to pepper their Thai with English for my benefit - it actually makes it harder to understand.

Understood...You're a special person with special needs and we should all do our best to do as you wish.

  3. It's really hard to understand why Americans think Thailand is expensive, especially since we can't buy houses in LOS and the import taxes are so high.

I'll presume you meant why Americans think Thailand is INexpensive.

Actually I meant that Americans think Thailand is expensive - for a third world country, and if one doesn't "live like a Thai."

I have never met an American that, if they even know Thailand is a country, thinks living there is expensive.

If one only rents, no children-dependants in Thailand, no car only motorbike then yes Thailand is awesomely cheap. You own a house, make improvements, buy a car, have children, get married, things add up and is not as cheap as you might have assumed.

  4. Airport train to Phya Thai and then BTS to Victory Monument for minivan to Ban Phe, or to Ekamai for bus to Ban Phe or Rayong.

Better news. Airport train to Phya Thai, then BTS to Victory Monument for mini van direct to Klaeng. The mini van also goes onto Laem Mae Phim if you live out this way.

I do, thank you. I've heard reports of this mini van to/from Mae Phim but no one I spoke to could tell me where to find it, they said you need to speak Thai. Is it easy to find it at the Victory Monument and does it depart often? I'm not travelling myself, I'm asking for a friend who's coming to visit.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but why would your friend not simply hop in a cab and go. I can understand wanting to try out something new. I get it. But if not for the fun of taking public transportation, why not hop a cab???????

  5. Rayong and Pattaya are not the only places on the eastern seaboard. There are Si Ratcha, Bang Saen and Chonburi. No beach at Chonburi but it does have a seaside promenade. Also many smaller places along the way.

Work wise, probably more opportunity around Si Ratcha with all the new development in the area.

Yes u are right, there is a lot of places in Thailand, but not where u want to live as falang...

Please explain as I'm planning a move to that region in the near future for better schooling for kids.

  6. I wouldn't say he is burned out with Thailand; there is more to Thailand than that. I know lots of Thais who hate Songkran. Are they burned out with Thailand?

I loved Songkran in the relatively civilized Bangkok (no joke), but out in the lawless Isaan villages it isn't pleasant or fun at all.

You gotta love the Isaan style of celebrating, riding on a motorbike thru small village and being stopped by a mob, water, baby powder and mandatory drinking, yeehaaa

  7. Doesn't marrying a foreigner twenty (or more) years her senior then living off him, by definition, make her a sex worker?

No matter what her previous occupation/s were?

OK, so if you married a Thai girl within 5 years of your own age and both contribute equally to the family finances, maybe legit.

But who knows a foreigner/Thai couple like that?

So, does that mean stay at home mothers are all sex workers?? What a screwed up world you exist in.....

  8. I suppose I need to go to one of those, we hate VF luncheons, so I can find out what I really did in my life. Not sure I would recognize the fellow you guys have invented as the boogyman of Chiang Rai, however. I think you friendly gentlemen might be better occupied working on your own lives rather than worrying about mine. In short, get a life of your own.

Call John Wick - The man you call to kill the boogeman.

  9. Shop at local markets Avoid Big C etc Large eggs are 87 baht for 30 at wholesalers (they're everywhere) Buy Archa beer by the carton it's much cheaper than Leo and tastes better. My wife and I can easily live a "No frills" life on 300 baht/day, less if I gave up beer. But that won't happen.

Well now, your wife is quite the lucky lady indeed.

  10. The weather, the food, the culture, the people, the experience of living in a completely different part of the world, the challenge of learning a new language and adapting to a new lifestyle, the ease with which one can travel to a whole host of cool places, the fact that people don't take life too seriously, the way things are simpler than they were back where I'm from, the lower cost of living, the craziness of it all, beer with ice outdoors on a warm evening, weekends at the beach etc. etc.

keep posting like this and you'll be the kool kid once again......Nicely and simply stated.

  11. Sucker.....you fall for it...........

It was just the instructions from the g/f to make you feel sorry for him and take him also to live with you.

Why some people.....take them sooooo long to understand Thai people.......If ever......

Have you actually been involved with raising a Thai child ? There are lots of good stories, including mine, I realise there are some bad ones out there but your generalization is off base.

You used to be a solid poster & I enjoyed some of your posts, what happened ?

I've noticed a downward spiral since he was caught stealing papayas from his neighbor.
