    Is it possible that cheap knock-off HD's have hit the retail supply chain?  That could explain why some users are reporting excellent reliability while others are having constant problems with what seem to be the same models.

    Highly unlikely and OP didn't mention buying for a too-good-to-be-true price from China or Ebay etc. The serial no. can be checked online. And the guarantee wouldn't be honored, resulting in posting hysteria here: i.e., we would have been hearing about it as in the cases of fake flashdrives. Utils like CrystalDiskInfo can check usage hours & capacity. We used to have reports of members getting drives from retail outlets that had been used.

    A certain percentage of HDDs are defective . . . and as well a certain percentage of users just seem to encounter a lot of problems, kinda like expats in Pattaya. :smile:

    Win 10 installers and reinstallers, both casual and Bots, may be interested in this reduced edition:

    Windows 10 Home No Bloatware Edition is a stripped down version of Windows 10 Home with most of the bloat removed. Also available for 32-Bit Professional and 64-Bit Professional.

    Windows 10 Home No Bloatware Edition isn't for everyone. You can do this for yourself with the MSMG Toolkit. It is merely a stripped down ISO and requires you have a valid key to install Windows 10 Pro. It is only available in English, which it seems you can read if you made it this far :)

    As always, this was created by someone who wanted the bloat gone. Say goodbye to the Windows Store, Windows Media Player, Edge, Hyper-V, Windows Defender, and much more. If you want a really stripped down version of Windows 10, this is it. Otherwise, again, make your own ISO with MSMG Toolkit.

    Which begs the question are hongkongers and taiwanese really chinese. The fits I've met are invariably from those two places.

    They would be more likely to be present at your sorts of venues. But that's an irrelevant distinction for most TVF Posters, you see, who don't admit FITs exist anyway and think zero dollar tours are still a thing. The Thais quoted in the article don't make such a distinction either, though they might have. No reason to think that numbers of HKs and TWs would have changed significantly so the strong likelihood is mainland Chinese were being referenced specifically owing to the change.

    Anyway, go read the article and study the graphs: https://skift.com/2017/08/25/5-charts-showing-the-rise-of-independent-chinese-travelers/ Why would tourists to Pattaya would form the exception?

    I was talking about the Sukawadee side of Naklua. Alot of people exercise at night on the section near Cholcan Resort. Now they could in theory go along past Sukawadee if they watch for the buses. It would be nice to be able to go all the way to the gardens at Naklua. I did not mention any evidence just think it is sad when people can't get to the beach.

    The forum has much more critical pathway concerns.

    the Farangs who have a brain have left so some other idiots have or are

    Hard to say. The intelligent posters who leave give an intelligent reason for leaving, such as ran out of money, need for free health care in the nanny state, free Western education for the kids. Or they give no reason, just disappear. Reading through old threads sometimes for a bit of historical perspective, I rather miss some of them.

    But one thing they have in common is that, being intelligent, they don't need to congratulate themselves on their superior intelligence and handle on the "truth." And they don't come back to the forum to do so while trolling and posting bigoted nonsense. They have better, happier things to do.

    Member Mobi is a good case in point. Proven intelligent guy, an author, a bit disillusioned w/ Thailand but would have stayed except for the deterioration of his health and finances. When he left, he left. No subsequent trolling, sneering, posturing, and wasting webspace here. Good man; I just looked at his blog.

    So then what we have here is, on the contrary, evidence that it's mostly the idiots who've left-- though of course more arrive daily--who obviously aren't really so happy in their new lives. As is often observed here on the forum, they probably wouldn't be happy anywhere, so their bashing can't be taken seriously.

    even worse than trusting a private company

    So true. But you gotta cover all the bases. After years of reading postings from our sharpest members with the best advice, in 2014 I distilled the collective wisdom into the now-classic shrewd, street-smart TVF Poster Three Primal Laws Of Survival In Thailand:

    1. Never invest in anything you aren't ready to lose;

    2. Never own more than you can carry with you or leave behind;

    3. Keep your suitcase packed at all times.

    Which is all we need. Quoting one or more of the Laws gives you ten (+10) instant points of TVF posting cred from the peanut gallery.

     Also the mention of the 101 businesses, that are still there by the way and may even be 102 businesses now, that bring in 'so much revenue'. Surely that simply means high rents to the 'owners' and a few payments to local officialdom from many naughty bar owners?

    No. It also means meeting market demand. These businesses find plenty of customers enjoying their goods & services. And the market determines the rents, which would be high in any case in that location.

    Just seems harsh that someone living poorly in a shack over a klong gets evicted and these illegal owners still visit their properties in Mercedes cars.

    Not really, but enjoy the usual pretension to moral authority.

    Would be better if they checked up on the condos nearer to Naklua who I am sure are encroaching on the beach as then could travel all the way from Naklua Market to near the Bangkok Motorway by beach.

    You don't have any evidence of encroachment. Few care to travel "all the way" but do care about sitting on the chairs etc. BTW, try traveling "all the way" somewhere on any pavement in Pattaya. :biggrin:

    How so, and how is this only Thai style? Seems I constantly read such assertions in the liberal USA press.

    The above comments suggest the owner got away with his illegal construction. Perhaps everyone needs to look at the photo. The owner WAS treated the same as everyone else. Why is that so hard to understand? The building is demolished. Look.

    True. But you see the mighty TVF Pointing Finger Of Justice can't rest until the 101 businesses are demolished too. The righteous will ever bring it up, even if by implication, when there's mention of an illegal construction being demolished. This, even though the 101 businesses bring in a helluva lot of revenue--they should just be granted formal leases and formally taxed.

    The Finger keeps a list of targets used for pointing after other law enforcement as well, such as the arrest of a driver. The point is to diminish the significance of any good deed lest it be recognized as a good deed and maintain the nothing good narrative, which is so important.

    I'm still seeing those 101 businesses

    . . . "improvement" from 2005 . . .

    EDIT: That and the destruction of cozy beer bars by evil, eeeeeevil shopping malls that should've stayed in the BKK swamp they belong in.

    Central moved some cozy beer bars across the street to 2nd Rd and then a lot more were built down to Tim. The Soi Buakhao area expanded and the whole LK Metro thing got started in 2005.

    So I don't see that you have a point.
