  1. Some good points made above.

    To answer our OP:

"What's up with not using 3 plug power points?"
There's nothing inherently hazardous about a 2-pin system, just because there's no ground doesn't mean you're going to die. Many, many modern appliances are Class-2 (double insulated) and do not require a ground in order to be safe, they invariably have 2-pin plugs and usually, plastic casework.

The above is true UNTIL someone plugs in an appliance that requires a ground (Class-1), these usually have metal casework and will invariably have a 3-pin plug. Example of Class-1 appliances are, washing machines, microwaves, water heaters, air-conditioners and your desktop computer. Plug in a Class-1 appliance without a ground and all bets are off (desktop computers particularly, can bite if operated ungrounded).

As has been noted earlier all new installations must have grounded 3-pin outlets and be protected by an RCD (earth leakage protection). The electrical inspector may refuse to certify your system if it doesn't meet these minimum requirements, this will mean you're stuck on a temporary supply and paying double for your power.

This PEA document has some very good information for your sparks http://www.crossy.co.uk/Handy%20Files/groundwire.pdf notice how the incoming neutral is routed via the ground bar, this is the standard Thai means of implementing MEN your inspector will be looking for this configuration and may fail the installation if it's not done exactly like the diagrams. Incidentally, this is the same configuration as the US NEC requires.

"Where do I find a good sparky to hire in/near KK?"
    Sorry can't help there sad.png

    "Should a sparky be liscensed?"
In Thailand? I don't believe there is any form of licensing system in place (at least not for domestic sparkies) sad.png

"Where do I buy quality switches and points?"
Any of the big name DIY retailers (Homepro, Homeworks, Boonthavorn etc) and there are a multitude of electrical specialist shops, have a look around

"What sort of prices to wire up a 300sq/m house approx?"
Sorry can't help there, our sparks (we used up four) was included in the cost of the build sad.png

  2. Your pump certainly won't like crunchy bits in the water, install a filter in the supply to the tank and clean out any sand that's already in the tank.

What model pump do you have (or post a photo of it with the cover off)?

What symptoms are you seeing when things go awry?

  3. Is your pump above the level of the tank?

If so you may need an additional non-return valve to prevent the pump losing its prime (the valves in the cheap pressure pumps do wear and leak).

Do you run your tank dry? That would also cause air to enter the pump and kill its prime.

  4. The 'shock' phase for me consisted of feeling totally drained and unable to do anything, even getting up for a leak was hard work sad.png

Lasted 3 or 4 days IIRC before starting to feel better.

My Indian doc didn't warn me about the shock phase so when the fever went down I thought it was over, perhaps that's why they call it 'shock'. sad.png

  5. What you need in order to build depends upon what you are building and where.

In Bangkok and the major cities you need drawings from a certified architect/engineer in order to get a building permit. Out in the boonies your 3Ds will probably do.

If you are building in conventional Thai post-and-beam style your contractor should be able to produce shop drawings that will suit. Or, you could adapt one of the free plans here http://www.crossy.co.uk/Thai_House_Plans/index.html if there is something near to what you are doing and save the cost of someone doing it for you. That's what we did to produce this which started life as plan No.27 :

  6. To answer the OP (sorry)

0.1 Bar (1.45 psi) is equal to approx one metre of height between the bottom of the water tank and the outlet of the tap or shower.

1 metre height of water = 0.1 bar
2 metre height of water = 0.2 bar
3 metre height of water = 0.3 bar
4 metre height of water = 0.4 bar
    etc

Also, don't forget that a full 2000L tank weighs 2 tons!

  7. Disappointing, I been trying to get an invite for a month for this place to download 1-2 old things you cant anywhere else!

Looks like I'm never going to get them now :@

UT33, invites have been closed for some time due to overpopulation.

What exactly do you need, I may have a source smile.png

  8. I believe UKNova closed about a year ago under pressure from the authorities. The only decent UK torrent site I know of that is still up is TVChaosUK.

Actually I think you're correct, my membership expired long ago so I just went to the site and it indicated that they are full.

  9. Agreed ^^^. Carefully check everything, particularly where it's fed from.

Does the main breaker incorporate earth leakage protection (does it have a 'test' button)? Ovens that haven't been used for a while can go leaky, they tend to recover after a few uses have dried out the works.

To open a 50A MCB on over current alone is a pretty serious fault for a 3kW oven.

  10. I think you will find that wth a UK passport you can apply for renewal up to a year in advance of expiry, I think its 18 months in the case of living outside the UK. and all current stamps and visa return valid, up to you if you request and in some cases pay to have them transferred. When i renewed the Thai offices did so without any charge.

You can apply for a new UK passport at any time (mine usually manage about 5 years before they're full, even 48 page 'jumbo' passports).

You can get up to 9 months 'credit' added to your new passport validity if the old one has not expired. Not much use to me mind :(

  11. The two new homes in our village that do not have visible columns also do not have any markings in the render to show their positions, nor are there colour variations across the locations.

Those with visible columns (ours included) have them picked out in contrasting colours as a feature.

Luckily our village has not yet been infected by the purple and green house disease :)
