  1. Thailand is (mostly) 3-phase 4-wire so you get 220V between N and L (hot).

I would NOT have dedicated 110V outlets unless you can find a way of absolutely preventing swapping of 220v and 110V appliances (put a different plug on 110V units maybe), colour coding is just too easy to forget (or not know).

You will also need a meaty (expensive) 220-110 transformer, better to use a (cheap) converter on each appliance and permanently attach the US plug to the 110V output.

Don't forget Thailand is 50Hz so US devices with motors may run slow and hot even on 110V.

  2. The base for the bolts is a solid brick built pillar and the expanding bolts tend to crack the bick substructure

I am thinking on the lines of epoxy bolts as they would tend to hold it together rather than crack it. Hanging a gate by the way

Got it. You may well find that the chemical anchors will just pull out too :(

Do you have access to the other side of the pillar? If so I would install a steel backing plate to spread the load and bolt right through.

  3. Electau has the critical point, the joint must be protected from moisture, with no electrolyte galvanic corrosion will not occur. UK regs suggest an acrylic paint but metallic paint or a waterproof tape wrap would work, there is no argument that it must be accessible for checking and maintenance.

As for rod material, pretty well anything metallic and reasonably corrosion resistant (Aluminium is a definite no-no) will work. Copper (expensive), copper clad steel, stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised steel are all OK.

  4. Agree with bbradsby, expanding anchors do not normally work loose, what are you fixing and in what structural material?

If you do insist on chemical anchors, Hilti have a local office and website so should be able to advise on a retail outlet.

  5. You need an import license for a commercial import. Despite the signs, you can go to the red channel and pay duty on imports for personal use, I've done it.

Did you get an official receipt? (scan please). What were you over limit on and how much?

I'm 99% certain that going through the red channel and declaring your over limit will, with a little tea money, get you through. Never tried it, so we must bow to your experience.

I would certainly not try to go through green, therein lies a world of hurt.

  6. If it truly is a DVD-RAM drive it may well not play DVDs.

What is the error message you see?

Have you tried a DVD software disk? If it can see that then DVDs should read OK.

Do you have the drive model number, should be visible in your device manager?

  7. I'm with JAS, I would avoid, but if you are going to run several showers off a multipoint they should all be at about the same level and you really ought to use thermostatic mixer taps (expensive) to avoid potential lobsters.

  8. By all means talk to the management, it can do no harm.

Is the roof door marked as an emergency exit? Roof access is usually prohibited for safety reasons, can't have people falling off.

The normal egress is down, get below the fire at all costs, if the stairwell is properly constructed and positive pressure it should remain smoke free. Once you get on to the roof where do you go from there?

    Of course TiT

  9. Hmmm ok, I want to connect an external hard drive I have Seagate 3TB which has its own power supply to the back of the True Visions box to record shows can this be done simply plugging into the USB port instead of the Sata ports?

No, I don't think it will work, the handbook for the receiver specifically excludes using the USB connection for video recording probably due to the USB interface being USB1.

    Can't hurt to try mind.

  10. Agree with SCB, we got a construction loan from them, against Wifey's income with mine 'taken into account'. I never did find out how they decide how much they will lend, other than it being 50% of the construction cost.

Reams of paperwork, but nothing particularly onerous, you do need a Work Permit mind.

  11. I don't think they'll care if you're a farang. They just want to stop kids from buying I think.

Not true. Ive tried to bribe counter staff into letting me buy and even a 1000baht bribe didnt work. They said come back when we can sell.

Or buy a slab of beer to go with that bottle of scotch, 10 litres is a wholesale quantity so can sell any time.

If we happen to be shopping outside the allowed hours we simply buy two slabs of beer and don't buy one next week, not exactly difficult to get round.
