Yet a news story that i have to question the figures. 30 to 99 years, great sales pitch but shouldn't it be from 30 to 50 years or 60 to 99 years? :coffee1:

Why not give a 99 year lease instead of complicating things with a 50+49years agreement?

I wanted to comment exactly the same.

Why not do things exactly replicating what Thais can do in foreign countries? i.e. if a Thai can buy freehold land in X Country, people from X Country should be allowed to buy freehold land in Thailand?

  2. I am all for increasing road safety. Disallowing transport of people in the cargo area of pickups is ok, so is stopping more than 2 on a motorbike, enforcing helmets and seatbelts etc.. also speed limits and other driving rules need to be enforced, with meaningful fines.
I do have an issue with the smart cabs not being allowed to carry more than 2 people in the cab. My wife bought a vigo smart for her business, needing the larger loading area. The back seats remind me somewhat on old Porsche back seats.... anyway the area is clearly designed to seat people. Maybe make it mandatory to retrofit seatbelts in 12 month or so. We use the pickup daily for short trips, anything longer we use my car.
How about holding a referendum for laws like this? Like the Swiss do?

  3. I find phone apps better. I have
A GPS gathering dust, as I havnt used it in about 7 years. Google maps/Wase/ViaMichelin/Sygic/inRoute/maps.me/Glympse are all good. Take your pick.

Absolutely agree. Software can be used on a tablet thingy with larger screen.
My preferred software for Android is Here. It is free and works offline, minus traffic updates.
Biggest challange wit GPS in Bangkok is lost signal. Especially when you have a toll road above you and buildings on either side.

  4. Ship or bring just irreplaceable items, such as photo albums, memorabilia, books maybe,  things that have other than commercial value to you.

Everything else better to buy new here. This way you are sure it is the correct thing, working in Thailand. I think overall you could save some money, plus end up with nice new stuff...

My mother, bless her, shipped her entire household here, including a 12 year old microwave. For whatever reason we ended up paying import tax on that item and that was more than a new one would have cost here.  For what its worth, that old microwave is still functioning ....  but annoyingly aged at now 20 years old.

  5. Was unfortunate enough having to attend two funerals last year.
We went on cremation day. That seemed to be the normal time.
Arrived at given time, dressed in dark trousers, black shoes, white shirt, no tie.
Next giving condolences to the closest family of the diseased.
Find a seat and follow proceedings.
Some most respected people are announced ad give things to the monks.
    Then some chanting.
At some point everyone gets up and proceeds past the coffin and monks. For that purpose you would be given the needed flower, candle etc,
Follow whatever everyone else is doing.
At the end you may receive some sort of amulet, or other little memorabilia.
Finally it comes to the cremation. If you are lucky it will be an automated process with not much too see. If not there might be a chance that one actually sees the coffin in flames. I have to admit I was a bit bewildered by that.
Anyway throughout the ceremony expect lots of praying, chanting, etc. Just make sure that you follow what everyone else is doing.
Have some cash ready to help with the funeral.
500 to 1,000 should generally be fine. If you like and can afford, feel free to give more, but remember that it is neither expected or necessary.
Sorry for your loss, and hope all will go well tomorrow!

  6. I presume innocense until proven guilty. To my there was enough doubt to continue innocence assumption.

Also interesting the catalog of pubishment mentioned earlier on. If I am reading it right, the her scentence exceeds the maximum punishment for the amount. Strange really, as the amount was very low within the bracket.

Usually users get just a penalty for first time offenses and then have to follow up for some time with reporting etc.

Anyway. To me this story stinks.
