Time to lift the magic. Jenny was my ex, my best friend and somebody I'm really missing a lot. She passed away last year, in 2017. Sad was that I couldn't even say goodbye to her.
But thanks for the good news, will be there. Who's playing??. I hope that isn't too off topic, OP might want to join in with his Missus?
The Thai guys name is Tripob and he plays in The Dude Bar weekly between Thursdays & Sunday’s. He plays a mean slide guitar and sings a vast array of mostly western songs. Highly recommended.

The temple that caused both countries to shoot at each other? OP, you might feel like home, there's a "Hong Kong Garden" in Sisaket.
Jenny & Mrs. Jenny might like to turn up on Valentines night as Peter has, (in my opinion) one of the best guitar players/singers in Sisaket performing there that night.

Maybe he lives inside Srisaket city but didn't know I'm going into a jungle.... but that's ok his info comforts me, I don't need to worry about getting modern stuff at there.
No, the opposite, mate. He’s resort is out in the countryside near the disputed (Thai/Cambodian) temple

I would say, it’s the dangerous riders/drives are more a problem (especially after dark).

Oh ya...... lottery again.
Seems it's a big thing to them, they talk about it all the time. Always come ask me HEY AWA GIVE ME A NUMBER. Luckily my gf doesn't really into it, she buys lottery sometime but just buy it then leave it and never talk about it.
I don't talk so much with people but indeed I need friends sometime. Thats why I join this forum ;-)
It's cool to make friend with Isaan locals but all we know its not so easy.
DILLIGAD yes I will keep a very "tight reign" on my money. Once I moved to there I won't make as much money as now.
Good to hear I get get most of the modern stuff from Ubon, silly me just worry too much.... 2 more days later I will be in Srisaket and feel the place.
As already said pop in to met Norbert at Pizza4u, Kanthralak or Frank in Living in the past,SSK and they will both help you, I’m sure (as would ‘Bergan’who posted above)

Perhaps Thai taste buds are different from a farangs, so the beers in LOS are up Thai folks street..When I see and smell what Thai folk eat l could be right..
I often think their taste buds have been ‘burnt out’. Same as the sweets/pastries, they all taste like lard to me!

You will find most of everything you might need (computer, doctor, dentist...) in Ubon city, not in Sisaket city however...there is a big difference in development and wealth between both cities.
As far as living in a remote village is concerned, it is first and foremost a matter of taste and personality.
I visited Hong Kong, which I hated like I hated Monaco, because I don't feel good in a concrete jungle.
But for other people, it is the opposite...they hate nature.
By the way, you will see that most Isaan villagers are not nature friendly at all: they use massive quantities of pesticides, fertilizers, cut trees without replacing them and kill all the wild animals they can, and would gladly cover most of the land with cement.
While in Kantharalak, you might enjoy to visit the Asoke Community which is still living in the traditional Thai way, while being much more productive than the farmers around.
Your capacity to live and stay in an Isaan village will depend on how much you can live alone...I personaly spend months at a time without speaking to a foreigner, since there are none in my area...and that doesn't bother me, I never think about it.
Yet, do not expect to have with local villagers the kind of conversation you can have in Hong Kong, not only because of the language, but mostly because of the content which may seem rather childish to many foreigners...for example, they will talk for hours about the lottery results, twice a month, and how they played number 47 while the winning number was 57, which was not so far...then they will move on to the ghost that a neighbor just saw last night, and so on.
So true. I always say, when they are not eating, they are talking about eating!
OP, don’t worry about being without essentials in SSK/Ubon.
Things are moving fast and most things are available in shops or by online purchasing. Things that are not, can be sent from Bangkok in a day or 2. It might take you a while to adapt but it’s not impossible. Just go with the flow and keep a very ‘tight reign’ on your finances, is my recommendation. Beware of the ‘get rich quick’ schemes as something that seems too good to be true usually isn’t.

May you live in interesting times.
I hope she still listens to you after she has reverted back onto ‘village mode’.
I won’t hold my breath!! 555

BL is good and consistently good. Thai lager is also good but I find it to be mostly a bit sweeter tasting and also less consistent in quality. The exception in taste I find, and the nearest to BL in being less sweet is, believe it or not, the humble Archaa beer which I am happily supping now as I write this. It is, however, notoriously inconsistent, and not by the bottle, but by the batch. The taste of a bad batch has a slightly rancid edge to it. So when a bad batch arrives in town I stop drinking it in favour or the quite palatable but sweeter taste of Leo. I try Archaa again after about a month as it always eventually returns to its top notch dry taste. The new 4.5% Singha Light also comes close to BL I think but hardly anyone sells it!
I also have a theory about BeerLao: Ive been coming to Thailand and doing border runs to Laos for 11yrs now and I reckon that BL was originally indeed quite special and superior. But I reckon that when they introduced BL Gold they re-labeled the original BL as BL Gold and introduced an inferior brew as BL which is still good but not as good as it used to be. And if correct, a very shrewd marketing move. Chang and Singha did similar in Thailand in a different way introducing Archaa and the s h i t e U beer.
In my opinion there is a valid reason why ‘Archa’ has a horse as a logo!

Thanks mate, yep i understand once i moved to there i should stop thinking about the past, im ready to step into the farm do what they do, just need a little bit of internet so I can keep up my freelance design work. At least food is not a problem in her village, and I have a house already, so i can just to make a little spare money from my profession, no more OT and card the time everyday.
Already briefly mentioned, but also go visit ‘Pizza4u’near the bus station in Kanthralak. Great stone oven cooked pizza’s and usually a good bunch of guys there. I believe there is also another western place called The Black Dog there too.

Thanks Dave! You live in village or town? The internet is workable at there?
Lived in both. Most places can get either 3bb or True cable at decent speeds/costs. I wouldn’t say 100% of places but maybe 70%(at a guess).
What is the name of the village in question please?

Hello from HK! I'm new to here, a chinese guy.
I have a Thai gf with her for 2 years, she is from Issan Srisaket, she bought land last year so I paid for building a house on her land for future. It's almost done, I have a long Chinese new year holiday so we will go there to have a look.
They are farmers so yes, my house is like in some jungle, 2 hours drive from Ubon city. As you guys know HK is a super busy tiny city like Singapore, so I think this visit will be quite interesting. My gf already warned me she will asked me to do all her farm work to experience how tough it is, cuz in past I complained about how exhausting to work a office job 14 hours a day everyday with computer. But she said its nothing compare with their farm work. But of coz, I'm not come here to compete who works harder. Just to see her family and soon we will get marry. This is the main reason I head to Srisaket.
Just wondered if any chance to pull a cable to my house for internet installation in such kind of village? I really doubt this. This is quite important for me coz I'm a designer, need internet to send files and communicate with customers. Not for now cuz I will still work a few more years in HK before i move to there, but just asking.
She said even drive to Srisaket town it still takes 1 hour, so I don't expect any nightlife, I can create party in my house ;-)
I know many of you here know Issan so well so gald to hear any advise!
Peace!
Welcome to Sisaket.
Been living & working there for about 6 years. It’s slow, quiet but I like it. There are a few different restaurants there, an aquarium, football stadium and the usual supermarkets. Drop into ‘Living in the past’ as it’s the oldest western restaurant and Frank is a wealth of info about the area. Ubon is a very large city with lots of everything you need and don’t need!
Good luck.
Dave.

It makes no sense to me at all given how close Issan region is to Laos. I understand why a quality beer from Belgium or Germany is expensive in Thailand but I really do not understand the pricing at all. Is Thai beer really that bad?
Yes. It’s all cheap gassy lager. As they say, same same but different.
Hence the price of BL Dark.
It used to be smuggled across by policemen for 1,000b a box (so they say).

I beg your pardon. Thanks a lot !!
Jenny2017 have you still got your fear of water! 555!
Sisaket has also got quite a nice little Aquarium (30b entrance fee) in the center of a large lake.
