  1. Add me and my wife to the list.

Any suggestions for a hotel near the party.

I would suggest either the Majestic Hotel, Thong Tarin (OK but old) or Majestic Twin (at the end of Soi Cola). Suggest you book in advance as its quite near to Surin Elephant Festival time. There are loads of cheapy places fairly nearby if not.

  2. Tell us your horrific story Nana .... To spew so much anger you must have gotten a large screwing.

No way you can be so angry without having lost your shirt and spent time in a quaint Issan village.

    My condolonces.

Please don't because it will be the same script as many others (myself included) ! 555

  3. 5.5 years ago, Mrs opened her [our] new salon/shop, she employed 2 staff and a house maid, i kept the books and and after all deductions was making about 22k a month, Very Good!!

At that time there were 3 salons in the 500mtr road, now there are 9, Mrs works alone now, house maid once a week, and lucky to break even in the month,

Like other posters have said, if a thai sees a good thing and will do the same, Monkey see, Monkey do,,

In conclusion OP, getting the place walled up,plastered, lights, fanTV ect, something like 450k would/should do it, then there is shelving, fridge and stock to buy, perhaps another 70k+? What i have seen in some local shops is shelf framework made from the blue 19mm water pipe, now that has got to be cheap and sturdy, plywood cut to size, and takes a lot of weight.

Another good suggestion was selling plants, being farmers, they could make there own compost, bag it ect, and sell pots and flowering plants ect, this would keep them in touch with the background they know, rather than being bored to tears watching TV all day,

I remember you talking about your start up at the time but I had another personallity then (Shhh!). It is very hard to make a go of a Business Startup over here and very few (myself included) are not willing to put in the long manhours and effort.

I take my hat off to those who succeed.

  4. Very nice video. Thanks. smile.png

How do you define "village?" How many people? I've seen people call what I'd call a town of 15,000 people a village in LOS. Do you have a general feel for that?

    I guess I have 40-50 homes in my village,roughly 200 people...that's a guess though.

Best of luck to you! : )

  5. You may tarnish me as a grumby 'ol git' but I would just like to say that you should ensure the people running/maintaining your shop should be clever enough for the new responsibilit[es. I opened a small village shop with the 'now' ex-wife and it went well for a couple of years. Slowly but surely the stock deminished, money was lent out and not returned, others opened identicle shops and wife sat there bored so the Isaan national passtime started up..... gambling. First with the family for 20b a pop 'No problem'. After 4/5 years the shop and family home is deserted and she will soon be in prison.

I am sure you would not expect a rice farmer to understake a job as a heart surgeon. Sorry just thought Id mention it. Please dont think it cannot happen to you. It can.

  6. Hi Ralph,

Sisaket province has its own Immigration located in Phusing (near Cambodian Border).

But they have their office in Sisaket open on Mondays and Fridays. When you’re driving to the Big-C on the 226 coming from town, just go straight, turn left after the traffic light and cross the railway.

You’ll see the immigration after about 250 meters on the right hand side.

Phibun Mangsahan is for people who live in Ubon province. I’d just drive to them and ask them how to go on. Good luck and welcome. wai2.gif

Sisaket office no longer opens on a friday, its Monday and Tuesdays. They seem very helpful too.

Ralph, I too moved to Sisaket area and tried a number of times to hand in a TM28 notification at 2 different Immigration offices. They are not interested and just told me to do my 90 day report (There) at the correct time with my current address on it, which i've done 2 times now with no problems. After showing a rental aggreement, they have also provided a Residence letter too (for 500b tea money).

  7. It is unlikely your labor office will issue a work permit on a retirement extension of stay but you can ask.

I have visited a sort of Immigration sub-branch and the lady told me to visit the labour Office to try just what you suggested.

To be honest, I felt that I was being fobbed off by someone who either didn't know the answer OR just wanted to give the 'problem' to someone else.

I will now visit the labour office and try them for size!

    Thankz

  8. Can I ask another simple visa question....

I am on an extention due to 'retiremement' but have no 'Employment Prohibited' stamp on my passport. I have been offered a part time teaching job in a uni and although assistance will be provided with regard to visa/ W.P. implications, do I need to 'walk away' from the 11 months remaining on the above extention and obtain a 'B' visa and work permit and start over again???

    Thanks

  9. i think the issue will be a green book if you need or want it. It is very rare to find them with the book but if you do plan on paying big$$$$

Good advice above. I did a lot of investigations a few years ago about this bike. There are loads of them for sale and plenty of interest over here. Parts are easy to source and there are also a few internet sites originating from Australia too as well as Thai clubs.

Dont consider anything without a CORRECT green book is my advice to you. There are loads of threads here on both subjects (SR & green books)

    Re- kick start.

The inventor had a 'gammy' ankle so he designed the decompression lever on the Sr400 so that its very easy to kick over. Check mocyc.com there are usually loads for sale on there.

  10. Good idea. I stated the above not because I am a negative type of person (pint glass half empty) but I have been there, done that and got the divorce papers to prove it. wub.png

Personal responsibility and liaibility is the key. If you set anyone, anywhere up in business without adequate prior training and input into the business and it all starts on 'hand outs', those same hands will come begging for more when the nest-egg has vanished.

Look around your location and see who is making the money and why.

  11. But in my opinion you will only make your sales target if its the first shop in the village. So look whats lacking.

Very true until someone else notices you look like your succeeding and then a further 15 will spring up!

Please note that i said 'look like' and not 'are succeeding.

  12. UK pensions are only split with a wife, if you were married to her when you earnt the pension entitlement.

And then only split if she has access to the UK courts for divorce.

My personal experience was that there is no stead-fast rule in England how the split is made up for a pension split. Its done on a one off basis. If i remember rightly that is,however not the case in Scotland where there IS a precident rule of Law.

  13. I think some people need a 'Thai ladies gossip' filter added to their brains because a lot of stories come to light that way and nobody really knows the truth (including the farang husband involved).

i have heard of countless horror stories in the Surin/Buriram province.

  14. I dont give a toss, but having visited and spent time up your way I know there are many spiteful vindictive farangs and their ex BG partners that driven by greed and jealousy, coupled with hate and resentment have nothing better to do than make problems for someone making a go of their business.

I was always taught to cover my ass, up to you.

Very true and many stereotype people after visiting anywhere. The fact that you mention what you were taught, suggests you have been no chior boy either?

As a matter of interest which towns did you visit to get to that assumption and how many times?
