Guess it's useful to know that Kantharalak's about 75 km away from Sisaket, near the Cambodian border.--
64k to be precise Sirchai. [85k from Meuang Ubon]
Mr Pedantic, who just happens to live opposite a white marker-stone in between the two!
Better than being under it! 555
Merry Xmas

I am envious but still cannot see any need to wear a dish cloth round my head(local silk or not)? Suppose its marginally better than the 'God Botherers' shirt and ties!

Not a before dawn type person generally but jet lag the first day or two has me up to behold sunrises like this at the house.
Sunrise and sunset are two of the highlights of living in Isaan.
I think the bits inbetween that are quite important too.

Please try the "Cuckoo's nest" in walking street ( Sunday market, in Thai "Tannonn Kundoee") Brian ,an American's running that place.
Another possibility is Frank, the German bloke, near the cops.
Franks is closed for Xmas and I have not heard that Brian (Cuckoo's nest) is doing anything either.

Where in Isaan? Isaan is a huge geographic area. What province or local LTO was this?
Does it matter?
Surin Province,Rattanaburi Transport Office (its nr tatoom), They are crap and my friend wasted 2 trips there!!!
Yes, it does matter, just as it matters who the information is coming from. And this information is also second hand information.
Too much unreliable and quite often simply not true information all over the net.
Very true. and where did I state that I was not there with him, so this is second hand info?
You, my friend are jumping to conclusions but i do agree with your sentiments even though incorrect on this occasion.

When I have been stopped I have always been asked for my driving license UK or now my Thai one not my passport but you are required to carry a copy of your passport with you in the vehicle if your an alien farangie.
I think by Thai law you have to carry ID and although your passport number is on a thai D/L just to be on the safe side,I laminated a credit card sized copy of my passport details page cos its far easier to carry in the pocket/wallet.

you can legally drive here for 6 mths on a UK licence.. if you have the new style UK plastic licence you can just go to the transport office and get a Thai licence.. (you will need a copy of your passport, doctors certificate and do the basic colour blind and reaction test) it takes about 1 hour.
Wish it was still that simple here mate. At the test centre near Pattaya, they recently made it compulsory to also sit and watch videos on road safety and take a multiple-guess test in addition to the normal stuff you mentioned. . This applies even if you are renewing a 5 year Thai license.
How recently was this?
I think it has always been the case that this should happen but that it was not being enforced. When my tgf renewed her 1 year to 5 years in October she did not need to do them. I also did read somewhere that people were saying they had to do this specifically when renewing a 5 year licence - but my memory may be faulty..
I have also experienced this a month ago in Isaan. Its a new rule so that Farangs have to endure the same Video and Bingo test (with very suspect & ambiguois English multi choice questions.)

1)Book a hotel early as they are usually full.
2)Starbeams Restaurant is very friendly and the family will be made welcome. Check them on Tripadvisor.
3)See if there are any local Farang websites with more Surin info.
4)Ensure to get tickets for the VIP shaded seating in the show.
5)Hope you enjoy yourself

THanks for the kind feedback about availability of aftersales support. I think this is a key consideration.
As for Ford, it is not just the value of the petrol voucher, it is their "take it or leave it" attitude that I would like to highlight. If they even bother to ask a supervisor or manager about it, I would say they bothered to try. In y case, the sales people just refused me on the spot.
tua2kee, many dealers have that attitude in Thailand.
Basically if you are looking to buy a popular new model like a Focus, they will not budge. Try that will an older or less popular car and you will get freebies to sell them. It reminds me of the old phrase (but replace pig with Pug,maybe)
Put lipstick on a pig and its still a pig!

Having lived in that area for the last 7 years, I am not aware of any condo's that could be purchased by a farang. There are however a number of new estates being built around the outskirts of Surin.
Rental starts at around 5k p.m. for a small town/shop house rising to ???????. I would suggest an average price is maybe 8>10k a month depending on location and size. Maybe worth trawling for a local farang internet site? or take a look here...... http://surin.thaiapa...php?os=0&lan=en
Hope that helps

Have you searched thru the archives here because i do remember all these questions being asked before (maybe 5 years ago) with loads of info. I have built a kit car in UK so thats why I remember the thread. I seem to recollect using a Bug is the easy way to go.

I to have been to these rituals near to Buriram.
As you suggested they were most convincing UNTIL money had to change hands! That then ridiculed the whole circus act!
The only spirits I saw were 40% proof ones and lots of them! Sorry but I see it all as a game to extort dosh from the gullible and un-educated here in Isaan. Do they do this in BKK too? I doubt it.

Life in Issan is full of surprises. I can tolerate many things here for the enjoyment of the quiet and tranquil lifestyle of country living. But, I having a lot of trouble dealing with ants, centipedes, and scorpions. I have been stung by scorpions twice. Believe me, I never want to go through that pain again.
Does anybody have any solutions for erradicating these pests. How do the rest of us cope with them?
Scorpions are no way worse than a Centipede bite!
Dont listen to the "tree huggers" and just help the to paradise with a size9!

I have lived not too far away from Buriram for many years and always read related posts here. I do seem to remember some time ago posts about bad air quality in that area and many asthma cases

Language evolves with time, just like populations in countries. I remember coming off a TG flight at Thief-row and betting an American guy that the first 5 people he hears in England won't be speaking English....... I won the bet!
Every country has slang so why not Thailand?

Your not too far away from Buriram where the Buriram expats use a local forum, maybe that might be of help to you.
I hope everything goes well for you all

Both bus stations are in the centre of town really, so no worries there. They are also quite close to one another. As for somewhere to stay in that price range? I am not sure to be honest. There is one called Sabai Hotel which is probably nearer 1000 a night. You can probably find others with lower charges if you search the www before traveling. Hope that helps.
I have stayed at Sabai many times. Its OK

I have an older 1.8 liter Focus Ghia. The gasoline engine has enough power but my old Nissan diesel pickup gets more kilometers to a liter. The Focus does about 10 kpl mostly local driving. The car has been remarkably trouble free and the dealer service has been very good. It is fun to drive but it will be my last car in Thailand. Only diesel trucks for the future. Hitting a dog cost the insurance company 42.000 baht. All the plastic junk that serves as a front bumper and grill were destroyed.
Hows the dog?
