  1. The sales clerk's English has gone astray. Alcohol sales are not permitted outside the hours of 1100- 1400 and 1700 onwards except in wholesale quantities (beer= 2 cases or more). The big stores, including Tesco Lotus, stick to this rule; the mom and pop shops don't.

Thank you as that explains it. I guess a number of the employees had the same English teacher as I have had at least 3 or 4 of them say the same thing !! lol !!! Guess I'll have to time my trips now. Thanks again.

The only correction is the time...on wards should be 12 midnight. Even 7-11 and all large company min marts threw out Thailand adhere to this.Except local mom and pop stores.whistling.gif

  2. My photo doesn't show it, but if you look at the relaid track from the side, it looks like a roller coaster. I hope the weight of the trains will bed it down flatter.

That's not how it works you put in a road bed that will not bed down differently. If one section goe's down the whole line goes down.

As I said I wonder if they did any thing about a proper road bed apparently not.

Road bed whats that? whistling.gif Any side bets for the first derailment.?whistling.gif

  3. To the best of my knowledge there is only two Burger Kings and two Subways here. The subways are the same the world over. They buy the pre sliced meats and it is up to you what goes on it. There are four McDonald's as far as I know could be more wait for the two new malls to open.

The rest of the mentioned fast food outlets are not as yet in Chiang Mai although there is smaller shops around town. The best is in my opinion Amazing Sandwich.

Funny they didn't mention the KFC several of them around.

There are 3 BK's and 8 McD's and only Budhha knows how many KFC in CM.

Thanks I only knew of the Burger King in the night Bazaar and the one at Tha Pa Gate. Where is the third one?

I knew there had to be more McD's but wasen't sure and as you say who knows about KFC.

In the airport along with a DQ that does burgers and dogs.

  5. Yes; topic should read 'Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai road'. Doi Saket district extends all the way to the provincial border with Chiang Rai.

The Lao river flows there along the road I think.

In the past 8 years I have seen that section wash out 4 times. Plays heck for the visa runners.facepalm.gif I though thought the name of the river was Beer Lao.whistling.gif

    1382612023.jpg

It’s reported that the bus was hired by a group from Saraphi so that they could make merit at a temple in Lampang. On their way back to Chiang Mai they wanted to stop at Pan Thong Waterfall.

Police say that in heavy rains the bus skidded off the road and fell into a ravine 100 metres below.

When police arrived at the scene they found five bodies in the bus. Police say the operation to save the rest of the passengers was difficult in the darkness.

Police said the accident happened at 7 pm on the Wang Nua-Phayao Road in Tambon Wangthong in Lampang's Wang Nua district.

Police said the bus crashed into the roadside guardrail and plunged into a 50-metre-deep ravine.

  11. I would suggest that Surin is considerably out of the way for someone coming from a northwesterly direction such as Chiang Mai (look at a map). Notice how Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Yasathorn, Ubon is a much more direct route. (The map below is a bit oversimplified. My suggested route does swing through Phitsanulok, as probably does the second poster's route).

I've done the route in two legs: Chiang Mai - Khon Kaen (12 hours), and Khon Kaen to Ubon (4 hours). Do the math.

You need to back to school. NCA goes threw Chaiyaphum-Bua Yai-Buriram-Surin -Ubon not even close to Korat.

Ah yes, now we have the rest of the story...which continues to confirm why the CM->Surin->Ubon route is still 2 hours longer. Isn't that really where the rubber meets the road, ah, so to speak? wink.png

You might say so but that is why I stay with NCA. I'm not saying their perfect but I have not seen them in an accident all the other I have. BTW when I drive and next month I will it is usually 12 hours CM to Surin 880 km and the wife drive a fair amount of that.

According to the NCA schedule they do this trip to Ubon in 17 hours.

  13. Done the trip a few times, two bus companies that go there direct are nakornchai and phetprasert.

We favour the latter as its a quicker trip about 13hr,and goes via khon kaen and roi et

nakorn takes you further south via korat and a couple hours longer.

    Price circa 800bt one way.

Night travel is ok,roads quieter and don't have the sun burning you up.

Both companies have a better reputation than most , though I will never come to terms with why they all allow drivers to drive over 8hrs before swapping over.

Sent via tin can and string after pigeon shot

NCA on its trip will use up to 4 drivers and I have never seen them drive over 6 hours.

  14. If they check their records and notice that you have not made reports before making trips out of country they could still fine you. I suggest you have 2000 baht handy as a just in case measpt mailin of 90 day reports.ure.

Are you aware that you could be making the reports by mail. See: http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/base.php?page=90days

Can mail-reporting be done with all immigration offices throughout the country, or only a select few?

    Cheers.

Kap Chong Immigration and Korat Immigration do not accept 90 day report mail ins.

  15. If you want to get out of town for a couple days. Visit the Thanthon Orange Orchard (800 rai) GPS .20.052999, 99.405265 (Thanathon Orchard,สวนส้มธนาธร,Tha Ton,Mae Ai,ท่าตอน,แม่อาย,เชียงใหม) this on highway 1089 that joins the 107. about 190 km from Chiang Mai. This is more than an orchard its a garden and the oranges are fantastic they rival anything from the US. There are some great guest house and resorts in Ta Ton. You can take a boat ride down the river to Chiang Rai or you can carry on by road to Maie Sia and the Golden Triangle.

  16. There's SK? money exchange near the iron bridge and also one on Loy Kroh road opposite where the Olde Bell pub used to be.

Ask first for a premium on advertised rates.

It is not close to the defunct OB further 100 meters east. Its next door the Paradise bar..

There is one directly opposite where the Olde Bell used to be and it gives better rates than the one you're talking about!!!

Your correct sorry about that.thumbsup.gif Would you have a photo of it to share.
