  2. Will Chiang Mai get its Monorail? Project Moves Forward Oct 9, 2013

    Others

CityNews – The proposed monorail for Chiang Mai which CityNews reported in July this year has now been backed by the Pinkanakorn Development Agency, it was reported in the Bangkok Post today

    1381329517.jpg

Sarawut Srisakun, the director of the agency was reported as saying that Chiang Mai has not just grown in popularity with international tourists but that the city is fast becoming a hub for international meetings such as the 2nd Asia – Pacific Water Summit at Chiang Mai International Convention and Exhibition Center in May this year.

He expressed that he was concerned about Chiang Mai’s transport system in view of the city being a dynamic and growing destination.

The proposed monorail may help improve a transport that vastly needs improving. If plans should come to fruition then the 7 billion baht monorail will stretch around Chiang Mai for approximately 27 kilometres, taking passengers all the way from the city centre to the Irrigation Canal Road.

The proposal must first be viewed by an executive committee and then it can be sent to the government for approval.

The Pinkanakorn Development Agency (Public Company) was established in February 2013. Under the supervision of the Prime Minister the agency aims to promote tourism in Chiang Mai city and the rest of the province, and to help improve the quality of life of the people in these areas.

  3. Thank you pwm, that is extremely helpful. We'll do the crossing at Chong Chom then. My mind is at ease that the trip will be fine.

Yesterday I drove car from Nonki to Kap Choeng Migration, and visited the Chong Chom bordermarket.

On my way back there was water in the street just before the cross in Prasat, about 20 cm,

and just before the cross in Nang Rong about 20 cm.

But no problems to pass, only slow down little.

I did a chunk of it on the 8th (yesterday) one day after you - from Bangkok to Sisaket, along the part of 24 OP will be using. No water anywhere on the road on 24. Cant speak for Prasat to Chong Jom.

Prasat to Chong Chom.. Drier than the Sahara Desert

  5. Your Thai license is good in California without getting the International Driver's Permit (IDP) for it. Easily verified on the California DMV website. Without a credit card though you're out of luck renting a car although you might look for one of the rent-a-wreck places that rent crappy but serviceable cars.

Actually, if California's new law about DL's passes their legislature and is signed into law, YOU can be an illegal from anywhere and get a DL! That means no passport, visa, former expired DLw00t.gif alt=w00t.gif> and you can still drive LEGALLY.

Only the five year Thai DL is reconized. The 1 year is not and is a temporary DL and says so on the DL>

  6. Back to Chiangmai.... the construction industry will do fine, apart from the occasional temporary slowdown. Two reasons.... building standards are so low that most buildings need replacing after 20-30 years, and Thais on the whole don't like secondhand houses, partly for the first reason, and partly because they're unwilling to buy a house where someone has died.

Just do some research on the second hand housing market in Chiang Mai and you'll see that the market is already swamped.

  8. Crackdown on Dangerous and Illegal Foreign Drivers Oct 8, 2013Others

CityNews – It was reported in the Bangkok Post today that foreign drivers in Chiang Mai have come under scrutiny for causing accidents, and so a centre has been set-up to teach foreign drivers about local traffic laws.

    1381228923.jpg

The centre aims to bring the number of accidents involving foreigners down. Police, tourist police, the transport office, and immigration will all work together in keeping the centre running.

Chanchai Kilapaeng of the Chiang Mai transport office told the press that he hoped the centre would reduce traffic problems caused by tourists who were not familiar with local driving laws. He added that foreigners will be targeted by police for not adhering to local traffic laws and will also be fined if they are found driving without a license.

  9. The Japanese are generally a lot more worldly, they have been travelling a lot more, usually more educated and from what i have seen - quite polite in comparison to the loud, pushing in front of you in lines and travelling in herds and following a stick with a flag on it Chinese. But hey!

A trip to kanchanaburi a few years back made me change my tune about the Japanese, as a walked over the Death Railway respectful and remorseful at how many humans had lost their lives there, and had to endure a pack of Japanese with cameras, laughing, posing, shouting and blocking my way as they were - Very Proud! of the history that they were a part of making.... Meh!

Same attitude when they visit the Arizona Memorial at Pear Harbor.

  10. This is quite common in undeveloped country like Thailand !!!

Sorry I don't think its common AT ALL!

It might not be unusual but it certainly is not common.

Suggest you visit Issan, especially Ubon during morning rush hour. This is very common here.

As common and as predictable as the sun will rise tomorrow.

  11. You can just go there earlier just before opening time. Most of the time there will always be space in the outdoor parking lot.

Kad Suan Kaew can be worse at times, especially when you have to pay for 10 baht.

Sent from my GT-N7100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

KSK is another I refuse to drive to or park at. Take a Tuk Tuk..

  12. Rules to be set for foreign drivers renting cars

    Nopniwat Krailerg

After receiving numerous complaints from local people about foreign tourists renting cars and motorbikes in Chiang Mai the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation Office and the Chiang Mai Police have decided to implement rules requiring rental agencies to check the driver’s license of tourists before allowing them the rent a car.

Charnchai Keelapaeng, the head of the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation Office, said that the complaints stemmed from foreign tourists from Europe, America, and Asia but especially the large influx of Chinese tourists that don’t follow traffic signs, drive the wrong way and cause traffic jams and accidents.

The Office and the Police will establish aTourist Assistance Center and Training center at the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation Office. Enforcement of the rules will begin November 1, 2013 and rental agency owners that allow tourists who do not have a driver’s license to rent will be punished under the Motor Vehicle Act. The Office will coordinate with each consulate to publish the information.

Charnchai Keelapaeng and the Chiang Mai Traffic Police agree to enforce regulations requiring visitors to have driver’s licenses before they can rent a car.

  13. This is one major difference.

    From CityNews

    Oct 4, 2013 Lifestyle

CityNews – The Chinese government is cracking down on bad behavior abroad. Deputy Vice Premier Wang Yang announced yesterday that Chinese tourist behavior is affecting the image of China.

    1380883794.jpg

The 64 page manifesto published this year on how to act politely the minister said should be read by anyone going abroad.

This booklet offers such advice as:

do not pick your nose in public, do not steal safety vests from airplanes, do not mingle outside public toilets in foreign lands for lengthy amounts of time, do not urinate in swimming pools, do not steal hand towels in Italy as souvenirs to take home, do not use feet to step on things in Nepal, do not order pork when in Muslim countries, do not use the left hand to touch people in India, do not eat bread with one greedy bite or use loud noises when eating noodles on airplanes.
