  1. Rules to be set for foreign drivers renting cars

    Nopniwat Krailerg

After receiving numerous complaints from local people about foreign tourists renting cars and motorbikes in Chiang Mai the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation Office and the Chiang Mai Police have decided to implement rules requiring rental agencies to check the driver’s license of tourists before allowing them the rent a car.

Charnchai Keelapaeng, the head of the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation Office, said that the complaints stemmed from foreign tourists from Europe, America, and Asia but especially the large influx of Chinese tourists that don’t follow traffic signs, drive the wrong way and cause traffic jams and accidents.

The Office and the Police will establish aTourist Assistance Center and Training center at the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation Office. Enforcement of the rules will begin November 1, 2013 and rental agency owners that allow tourists who do not have a driver’s license to rent will be punished under the Motor Vehicle Act. The Office will coordinate with each consulate to publish the information.

CityNews – The Chinese government is cracking down on bad behavior abroad. Deputy Vice Premier Wang Yang announced yesterday that Chinese tourist behavior is affecting the image of China.

The 64 page manifesto published this year on how to act politely the minister said should be read by anyone going abroad.

This booklet offers such advice as:

do not pick your nose in public, do not steal safety vests from airplanes, do not mingle outside public toilets in foreign lands for lengthy amounts of time, do not urinate in swimming pools, do not steal hand towels in Italy as souvenirs to take home, do not use feet to step on things in Nepal, do not order pork when in Muslim countries, do not use the left hand to touch people in India, do not eat bread with one greedy bite or use loud noises when eating noodles on airplanes.

  4. Mrs SP and I were just in California a month or two ago, and if there is a certified translation of the Thai drivers licence it was fine for Alamo rental car. Best thing is to check with the renta english and Thai.l car company op's friend decides to rent from.

The new Thai DL is a smart card and all info is in English and Thai. This is why most states and other countries do not require a IDP. Also I personally know of individuals that have been denied of use their Thai DL in the USA because it was a 1 year DL and across the top it says TEMPORARY. A 1 year Thai Dl is no good. You have to have a 5 year DL.

Mrs SP has one of the old permanent drivers licence that they stopped issuing.

My wife also has the same Thai DL. Need to find out if these can be converted over to the new Thai DL and be good for life.

With military short on funds, two airmen get private flyover during burial
    By Greg Seaby, CNN
    September 24, 2013 -- Updated 0827 GMT (1627 HKT)
    STORY HIGHLIGHTS
    • James Sizemore and Howard Andre Jr. were shot down over Laos in 1969
    • The remains of the majors weren't discovered until April
    • The nonprofit Warrior Aviation provided the private flyover at Arlington

(CNN) -- Two U.S. Air Force officers who died in a crash in Laos in 1969 were laid to rest Monday at Arlington National Cemetery and honored with a final flyover -- but not one provided by the U.S. military.

Citing budget concerns, the Air Force denied a request to honor the fallen service members with a military flyover. That prompted a private air squadron to step in.

"Unfortunately, the government hasn't been able to supply flyovers for these gentlemen that have served and gave up the greatest sacrifice they could, so all of us have decided to go ahead and fulfill the mission," said Calvin Peacock, a volunteer with nonprofit groupWarrior Aviation.

Maj. James Sizemore of Lawrenceville, Illinois, and Maj. Howard Andre Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee, were shot down in their A-26A Invader aircraft during a reconnaissance mission over Laos during the Vietnam War, according to the Defense Department. The pilots were considered killed in action.

The crash site was discovered in 1993, but the pilots' remains were not discovered until April. Military scientists then matched the remains with the dental records of Sizemore, solving the 44-year-old mystery and bringing closure to the families.

It was a true honor to be a part of the group that is allowed to do this.
    Larry Kelly, Warrior Aviation volunteer

A flyover is a military ceremonial ritual reserved for the most esteemed of fallen service members. The Department of Defense refused a military flyover for Sizemore and Andre because of the forced budget cuts known as sequestration.

The private squadron consisted of a B-25, two P-51s, four L-39 jets and an A-26 Invader, the same type of plane Sizemore and Andre flew. The Warrior Aviation organization is comprised of volunteers, most of whom are veterans.

"People like myself, the Vietnam generation, we know what sacrifice these guys made. It was a true honor to be a part of the group that is allowed to do this. When they asked me to do this, I said, 'Absolutely, it would be a honor, '" said Warrior Aviation volunteer Larry Kelly.

The Defense Department records indicate that more than 1,640 American military personnel are still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.

CNN's Paul Courson contributed to this report.

  8. why not get some extra fire power or bring in the army.. i mean its not like Thailand has a lack of man power.

If they bring in the army, border police or "thahan pran" then DNP has to share the confiscated rosewood with other agencies. this is something they would rather not do. Instead to boost numbers along the border, they are bringing up rangers from parks in southern Thailand to fight the Cambodian loggers, and the latter are armed with weapons borrowed from the Cambodian RCAF, or are themselves are RCAF, hence firefights are common.

The DNP has been working side by side with the Thai Royal Border Police and the army for the past two years in my area.
