  1. If you like teak furniture go to Ban Tawai before going anywhere else, 15 minutes outside of town.

Anyone know of anywhere similar in Kalasin, Roi Et or Khon Kaen?

Give the Den Chai/Phrae area ago.for contemporary and teak furniture. Big savings over Ban Tawai. On highway 11 about 2.5 hours south of Chiang Mai.

GPS 17.974794, 100.014596 . Great trip and scenery spend the night or two.

Do they deliver or do you have to drive a truck to the place? I remember Baan Tawai prices were not inexpensive.

all the businesses deliver for a fair rate. 5000 bt for kitchen set in dc and its 12000 bt in cm. 50,000 bt of furniture from dc to surin, 700km, transport cost 7,000 bt.

  4. Thanks a million khwaibah, I am in the states right now working, my wife is checking out if the hospital as we speak, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks she has had some kind of breathing problem. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is but besides the breathing problem in a weeks time her stomach had blown up and she looks like she is 5 months pregnant only she isn't pregnant. I am trying to find a Doctor that she can go see that might actually try to figure out what the problem is and maybe take care of it. So far everything she had a problem she rushes to the hospital, they give her some shots and then send her on her way. I will pass on the photo and see if I can't get her to go before she has to be wheeled in again

If you want send me a pm and i'll give you my wife's phone number to pass on to your wife and the wife's can yak yak...

  5. Bout right about Rattanaburi. I just been there for the afternoon. Surin is bigger and busier but there are a few farang places in Sisaket too. As said previously, Roi Et is also a nice place to "get away" too.

I don't really what to "get away". I was just thinking of getting some provisions and maybe a bit of English grub to bring home.

I actually like the quaintness of it up here. I love the local food but every now and then it would be nice to have something else.

I will need to get some visa stuff sorted next week. That means Kap Cheong, doesn't it? Maybe I can get through Surin on the way or way back. Probably on the way back as I will be looking for food to take home.

    Thanks again.

Kap Choeng it is and Staffords Food in Prasat and Norby's in Surin for take home. http://nnrestaurant.de.tl/ http://www.staffordsfoodsthailand.com/ you may wont a car to carry an ice box for all the goodies.

  6. Surin Ruam Phaet Hospital next to Surin plaza. my wife had had 2 operations by this doctor.

The doctors name is in Thai at the top. There are four hospitals in Surin and all the doctors rotate between them. The cost varies as to which hospital you go to. The hospital mentioned above post is the highest for cost. The hospital that I have mention and the doctor we have had personla experince with and will use him again and the hospital including my self. The trick is to find a doctor that you trust then HE can admit you into the government hospital if thats your choice.

  7. Looks to me like you'll need to drop down to Surin City about 75 km south of you. Since your in Surin your immigration office is in Kap Choeng which is 60 km south of Surin. BTW Surin City has some great farang place.

  8. All the charts show a significant increase or single spike for May.

In my Isan region I would state: rainy season has started LATE this year.

Just a couple of days now we have significant rain there.

(currently I am on visit in Pattaya btw,).

In my Issan area the season started early (May). Were finally at normal of rain fall for the first time in three years. Let it rain let it rain let it rain.

  9. At the main bus station in Surin you can get a local white 9 passenger van for 60 baht from Surin to the Chong Chom border crossing. 70 km and takes about 1.5 hours. the bus seats 9 legally but you may 20 joining you. After you exit Thailand and clear Cambodia immigration there are taxi(lemo) at this point that will take you to Siem Reap for 2000 baht. Its a two lane black top road and takes about 2 hours. I have done this my self. No bus from the border to SR but their is a bus from the border (O'Smach) to PP 600 baht. Chickens hanging from the back. I took a a pass on that and took a taxi to PP for 4000 baht.

  10. Not much of a Beer drinker myself, prefer good Wine but have you Beer enthusiasts thought about Home Brewing? Had a lot of mates in Australia who did it and claimed it was pretty simple.

Sure, no Bar Girls to serve it but I couldn't give a damn as I'm married to the best looking Girl in CNX.

I brought a kit back with me from Australia, Coopers draught, I think it is illegal for me to make beer in Thailand so lets say my wife made it, 2 kg tin made 39 bottles of beer plus one that I dropped on the floor, 640 ml size, just drank the last one the other day, excellent, cost was about 300 baht plus a bit of sugar. Shall be bringing more than one kit next time I go. Floor smelt good for a few days.

Brewing at Home and the Law

    cartoon%20police.jpg

One of the most asked questions regarding home brewing in Thailand is 'IS IT LEGAL?'

In a nutshell 'NO'. It is illegal to home-brew alcohol whether it is fermented or distilled for personal consumption / sale.

However please see below for the official stance on it.

"Section 5 of the Liquors Act (1950) states that it is illegal for anyone to brew their own alcohol, or even have the equipment to do so.

The maximum penalty for contravention of this section of the Act is six months in jail, or a fine of 5,000 baht, or both.

If the offender sells the liquour, the maximum penalty rises to a year in jail or a 10,000 baht fine, or both.

Those are the maximum penalties and can be imposed for making and / or selling distilled alcohol (spirits).

The maximum penalties for brewing or fermenting alcohol - wine or beer, for example - are lower: 200 baht for making it and 5,000 baht for selling it.'

Source: Payoon Poolsuwan - Phuket Excise Office

So from the above, it can be seen that provided you are not distilling (making spirits) and selling alcohol, i.e. you are only making beer / wine for personal consumption and get caught, you can expect a 200 baht fine.

I have also heard a rumour that people who wish to make their own home-brew liquours legally can apply to their local excise office for a licence. I am going to look a little further into this and then report back on this when I know more.

  11. NO COMPARISON

PP is good for a visit but to live there would be a stretch for me I will say the visa process is easy and you can work there without any issue you just get a business visa on entry $25 I think it was then you go to any travel agent and pay $250 for the year for a multiple entry work visa, lots of bar restaurant foreign owners etc. Prices about the same as CM. traffic insane.

CM is way ahead of PP in every way except the visa situation

Less dick 'eads in PP... Chiang Mai is swamped with them..

Oh yeah, and the local beer in PP is vastly superior to Thai beer... Anchor (not Ankor)

  12. The water appears blue and clean so I don't think its Ob Luang?

Seems there are around 3 places referred to as Grand Canyon of Thailand. Seems the post about near Ob Khan National Park is correct.

It looks great, you can see it from the plane on clear days, but these pics bring it to life!

It looks like (once you've checked for debris and depth) you can easily take running jumps, wow so cool!

  14. I have not had a Bud for 10 years and don't miss it. I was in the DC area in February and March visiting. We went to 6 Thai restaurants and they all had Chang Export, Singha, Leo and Tiger Beer. Every super market and liquor stores I was in also carried these brands. Yes I was drinking my Tiger.
