  1. Looks to me like you'll need to drop down to Surin City about 75 km south of you. Since your in Surin your immigration office is in Kap Choeng which is 60 km south of Surin. BTW Surin City has some great farang place.

  2. All the charts show a significant increase or single spike for May.

In my Isan region I would state: rainy season has started LATE this year.

Just a couple of days now we have significant rain there.

(currently I am on visit in Pattaya btw,).

In my Issan area the season started early (May). Were finally at normal of rain fall for the first time in three years. Let it rain let it rain let it rain.

  3. At the main bus station in Surin you can get a local white 9 passenger van for 60 baht from Surin to the Chong Chom border crossing. 70 km and takes about 1.5 hours. the bus seats 9 legally but you may 20 joining you. After you exit Thailand and clear Cambodia immigration there are taxi(lemo) at this point that will take you to Siem Reap for 2000 baht. Its a two lane black top road and takes about 2 hours. I have done this my self. No bus from the border to SR but their is a bus from the border (O'Smach) to PP 600 baht. Chickens hanging from the back. I took a a pass on that and took a taxi to PP for 4000 baht.

  4. Not much of a Beer drinker myself, prefer good Wine but have you Beer enthusiasts thought about Home Brewing? Had a lot of mates in Australia who did it and claimed it was pretty simple.

Sure, no Bar Girls to serve it but I couldn't give a damn as I'm married to the best looking Girl in CNX.

I brought a kit back with me from Australia, Coopers draught, I think it is illegal for me to make beer in Thailand so lets say my wife made it, 2 kg tin made 39 bottles of beer plus one that I dropped on the floor, 640 ml size, just drank the last one the other day, excellent, cost was about 300 baht plus a bit of sugar. Shall be bringing more than one kit next time I go. Floor smelt good for a few days.

Brewing at Home and the Law

    cartoon%20police.jpg

One of the most asked questions regarding home brewing in Thailand is 'IS IT LEGAL?'

In a nutshell 'NO'. It is illegal to home-brew alcohol whether it is fermented or distilled for personal consumption / sale.

However please see below for the official stance on it.

"Section 5 of the Liquors Act (1950) states that it is illegal for anyone to brew their own alcohol, or even have the equipment to do so.

The maximum penalty for contravention of this section of the Act is six months in jail, or a fine of 5,000 baht, or both.

If the offender sells the liquour, the maximum penalty rises to a year in jail or a 10,000 baht fine, or both.

Those are the maximum penalties and can be imposed for making and / or selling distilled alcohol (spirits).

The maximum penalties for brewing or fermenting alcohol - wine or beer, for example - are lower: 200 baht for making it and 5,000 baht for selling it.'

Source: Payoon Poolsuwan - Phuket Excise Office

So from the above, it can be seen that provided you are not distilling (making spirits) and selling alcohol, i.e. you are only making beer / wine for personal consumption and get caught, you can expect a 200 baht fine.

I have also heard a rumour that people who wish to make their own home-brew liquours legally can apply to their local excise office for a licence. I am going to look a little further into this and then report back on this when I know more.

  5. NO COMPARISON

PP is good for a visit but to live there would be a stretch for me I will say the visa process is easy and you can work there without any issue you just get a business visa on entry $25 I think it was then you go to any travel agent and pay $250 for the year for a multiple entry work visa, lots of bar restaurant foreign owners etc. Prices about the same as CM. traffic insane.

CM is way ahead of PP in every way except the visa situation

Less dick 'eads in PP... Chiang Mai is swamped with them..

Oh yeah, and the local beer in PP is vastly superior to Thai beer... Anchor (not Ankor)

  6. The water appears blue and clean so I don't think its Ob Luang?

Seems there are around 3 places referred to as Grand Canyon of Thailand. Seems the post about near Ob Khan National Park is correct.

It looks great, you can see it from the plane on clear days, but these pics bring it to life!

It looks like (once you've checked for debris and depth) you can easily take running jumps, wow so cool!

  8. I have not had a Bud for 10 years and don't miss it. I was in the DC area in February and March visiting. We went to 6 Thai restaurants and they all had Chang Export, Singha, Leo and Tiger Beer. Every super market and liquor stores I was in also carried these brands. Yes I was drinking my Tiger.

The canyon has become popular with locals wanting a swim

The police arrived at the seven rai canyon with a rescue team. It took two hours to retrieve the two dead bodies of Chanchai Supalert (17), and Saknarin Boonpornprasert (17) from the water.

Police found out that six boys had gone to the canyon in the early morning of May 24th after walking to Doi Suthep temple to celebrate Visakha Bucha Day.

The surviving four boys told police that all the friends jumped into the water. They swam out and then swim back towards the side of the canyon. They explained that Saknarin had panicked and tried to grab Chanchai. The two boys then both went under the water. The friends could only watch from the side as the two boys disappeared.
