  1. Free health insurance is only for Thais and permanent residents. Quite frankly I can't see any beneifit of having a yellow housebook and it it is certainly not "coveted" by any expat who has been here long enough to know that it gives no avantage over those who dont have one.

It has the advantage of never needing to go and obtain a certificate of residence, so that is definitely one more advantage than zero. Perhaps I haven't been here long enough to understand though!

Not all government agencies will accept it or give you Thai price for admission. (Fact)

Which are the government agencies that will not accept it I have not come across any up to now that do not accept the yellow book.

Sukhothai Historical Park and some LTD's (DL) are no goes. As long as you stick to the metropolitan areas you should be OK but when get out of these you start seeing the real Thailand.

  3. I went to BKK and then Siem Reap. I forget the price, HOWEVER, there are some things you need to watch out for at the Cambodia border. I'll try to stay on topic, unless you are unaware of possible scams. Anyhow, I just got a visa on arrival and I believe the busses/mini-vans run all the time out of BKK. Also, they do accept USD as a MORE popular currency than their own. ok, good luck.

You could consider getting an e-visa online (Google e-visa cambodia) for $28. Then you can tell all the scummy border touts at Poipet that you already have a visa. There SHOULD be an e-visa window.

Personally, I would avoid this border like the plague. You probably can't if you are taking the bus service from Chiang Mai but if you can get to Chong Chom in Surin province (or Chong sa Ngam in Sisaket) you may find the border less intense. Shared taxi is then a couple of hours to Siem Reap.

and that taxi by yourself is only 2000 baht and two hrs on a black top highway to SR. NCA bus from CM to Surin 960 baht 15 hours. Surin to Chong Chom Border crossing 1 hour by bus and only 60 baht. Chong Chom Border DOES NOT take e-visa and they will hit you most the time for 1000 baht for visa.

  6. ฿8 - 10 000.- for nice ones. Plenty around Buriram, I told my wife 'ok', but we go shopping in a buffalo cart, she stopped then.

My neck of the woods, Kap Choeng, 20 k and up. If you can get for 8k go for it.

    For a young buffalo, 8 - 10 k.

Just goes to show the difference of price in 100 km.

  8. If your wife has a bank account go to her bank ,with your wife..and apply should have no problem.

What kind of visa will you be own? If 60 day tourist visa no problem. Letter from your embassy will not help but a letter from Immigration will, located in Kap Choeng. My first account in Thailand was done on a 30 day visa exempt entry, hotel address, Bangkok Bank, never had a problem with them. I have used other branches threw out Thailand and was always pleased with their service.

  9. The chicken used at Subway in Thailand is not processed meat and not turkey meat It is what it says.

Now that you mention it to have false advertising at every outlet on conceivably the worlds biggest fast food outlet would seem a little silly.

They may have got that big with similar things along the way but they are to big now to continue them if in fact they ever did.

  10. You can tell that I don't get out much--where are you talking about? And, what's a Green Bus, and where do they go to/from?

On the Super Highway across from (formerly) Carrefour.

Green is the company. They go anywhere in Northern Thailand. Big, clean buses.

  11. No.

Unless waved over into the Thai passports queue by the staff at immigration, although tourists are often waved over as well.

Sometimes foreigners (non permanent residents) are allowed to use the Thai queue if traveling with a Thai spouse, but this depends on the mood of the officials and secondly, most Thais these days would be using the automated channels, hence this is not applicable for foreigners.

Never had a problem with my wife when using the Thai line.

  12. Sirchai

Thnks for that. I've been on a retirement visa from BKK for 4 years but have decide to settle in my wife's village where weve had a house fo about 25 years. Amnat is a long trip for me but I'm familiar with Si Sa Ket as my daughter was in boarding school there for 6 years. We also have family there so could probably use their address. My 90 day report is due in October and my visa in November, so maybe I'll do the report there and talk to them first. Thanks again for your help.

    Mike

I don't think they will let you do it unless you have a Sisaket address.

    Sisaket province, yes.

Instructions were posted by Thai Immigration a few years back indicating which Imm office should be used for residents of each province.

    e.g. Sisaket > Sisaket Imm

    Surin/Buriram > Kap Chong Imm

    and so on......

This is true. But Korat Immigration is allowing those in the extreme western parts of Buriram report to them instead of Kap Choeng and those in the extreme NW of Buriram are using Khon Kaen. Why? These other offices are closer. If you want to use Si Saket Immigration for the same reason you will need to go there and ask. they may say yes and they may say no. This is only for 90 day reporting, Your annual extension to stay has to be done at your area immigration office.

  13. I was talking certificate, not visa. The letter you may need for the likes of getting a driving license (if you are not on a Tabien Baan).

    Its called Certificate of Residence.

  14. Most farmers in the village where my mrs is from have already turned to sugar cane with only doing rice for eat, like everything else the price for sugar cane will no doubt drop like a stone and soon enough will be in the same situation as they are with rice. Thailand needs to get a grip of the corruption and start investing in Infrastructure.

300,000 rai peanuts when compared to the 6,000,000 acre Anna Creek station in Australia. On the other side lot of rai have not been planted this season for this very reason.

  15. Father of Canadian slain in Thailand in 2008 says suspect has pleaded guilty
BY BILL GRAVELAND, THE CANADIAN PRESS AUGUST 7, 2013 5:00 PM
CALGARY - Five years after a young Calgary man was shot and killed in a town in northern Thailand, his father says he is finally getting justice with word of a guilty plea in the case.

Sgt. Uthai Dechawiwat, who was off duty at the time, had been charged with murder with intent and attempted murder with intent, but initially pleaded not guilty.
