  1. Many of us live in the developing country called Thailand. Rule of law is really just a concept unless you have connections then you can become the law in specific cases. I've heard or read about every reason one comes to the Land of Smiles but a common thread seems to be a male, 35 to 60+, single or newly single with no money to decent money looking for a certain lifestyle. People who say they come because of the kind Thai people with a great smiles I think are trying to fool their friends and relatives at home. From this group we exclude the couples who retire to villas in Phuket and other high-end resorts.

Logic reveals that it boils down simply to cheap fun with the same or opposite sex without the constraints of law and rules that the visitor or retiree thinks "messed up his show" in his country of origin. The sense of awe at the freedom and inexpensive housing to say nothing of eating off street vendors for Bt100 a day stays with the guy for a long time. Now we have the freedom, lower cost of living and a lifestyle everyone with a functioning mind would covet. But then reality sets in. You find the girl or woman of your dreams at a beer bar or walking the corridors of The Paragon Mall. You hook up and begin to establish the same life here that you had back in the home country. Sure its cheaper and the your mate hasn't gotten fat yet but in the back of your mind you begin to realize that something is missing. Where are one of those 250,000 police officers when you need one? Why can't I own property here? What if I want to upgrade after a few years? Is my mate going to take all that me, or my parents, worked so had for? Will she have me killed? Why isn't ANYTHING in my name? If we have an argument who are the police going to side with?

After a while we would like a little insurance and first world protection when it comes with laws and rules. It seems to be a vicious circle that many posters mention after years of living the dream. What you first loved about Thailand later makes you grow to hate some aspects of life in the jungle.

An excellent, thoroughly thought out posting - well done. Again, there should be some kind of "bank" for posts of clear distinction - Mods has this ever been discussed? Perhaps, as an idea, we could do a star rating for 'responses' rather than just the OP thread?

Not everyone has the same opinion of each post. Some may like it and others may not.

What is clear distinction in your eyes may well be the reverse when someone else reads it.

Topics which are considered very useful to members are pinned at the top of each forum and contain many beneficial posts and useful information.

There is a star rating feature for each member and if you think that a member is worthy or otherwise of a star adjustment then you can access this feature through the member profile.

  2. Room Safe stolen from Hotel room occupied by 19 Year Old English Tourist.

Police were called to a room at the Baboona Hotel located on Pattaya Beach Road between Soi’s 3 and 4 on Wednesday Night after a guest of the Hotel reported a robbery. Police were met by Mr. Jonathan Erash aged 19 from England. He led Police to a wardrobe inside the room which used to contain a room safe which had apparently been stolen along with the contents which included a mobile phone, a digital camera, and 25,000 Baht in cash. He had just returned from Walking Street and realized his 2nd floor room had been broken into. The point of entry was the balcony door which had not been locked by the victim prior to him leaving the room earlier that night. Police are investigating.

  3. Thai man killed and English House Owner injured following house robbery.

A Thai Man was killed following a house robbery on Monday Afternoon. Police Lieutenant Colonel Tanadaert from Banglamung Police Station was initially called to a house in Nongprue owned by Mr. John Jones aged 48 from England. According to his Thai Wife, Khun Nigorn aged 25 who is heavily pregnant, the pair had returned from a Hospital Appointment to find that three men were inside their house apparently in the process of stealing items. Mr. Jones confronted the three men who proceeded to attack him with an axe. He decided to run away but continued to monitor the movements of the three men who left his house moments later with a bag containing 45,000 Baht in cash and personal documents. Although badly injured, Mr. Jones followed the three men as they left the house on their motorbike. Mr. Jones who was driving a Toyota Vigo pick-up caught up with them and hit their bike at a high rate of speed. One of the men was thrown from the bike and later died in Hospital, the other two men managed to escape with the bag of money. It is unclear at this time how the Police will proceed with this case, however it is likely Mr. Jones will have to go to court to explain the case to a Judge due to the fatality.

  4. I’ll never rest until we catch Peter’s killers

A MOTHER whose son died on holiday in Thailand, last night expressed hope this week’s inquest would help her prove he was murdered.

Bobbie Sinnott, from Market Street, Holyhead, has spent over £20,000 in a bid to find out what happened to her son Peter, 41.

His body was recovered from the sea off the popular Thai resort of Pattaya on January 5, 2002.

An inquest into his death will be held in Llangefni on Thursday.

Mrs Sinnott hopes it will be the next step in her long quest for justice for her son.

The 68-year-old said: “I want the Thai Police to investigate Peter’s death properly.

“They haven’t closed the case completely but they will not look at it again unless the inquest finds Peter was unlawfully killed.

“It’s a lengthy process but I will never rest until those responsible for Peter’s death are caught and brought to justice. To give up now would do Peter a grave injustice.

“This week is going to be very difficult but I have made a pledge to myself, my family and to Peter, to get to the bottom of this, whatever it takes.

“The answer lies in Thailand somewhere and I will find it one day,” she added.

“I have always been convinced Peter was a victim of foul play but trying to find the evidence isn’t easy, particularly when I am so far away.

“I have to depend on the Thai police and getting any fresh information is difficult.”

Peter went missing while on holiday in Thailand but his body lay undiscovered in a mortuary in Bangkok for nearly four months.

Peter was found only after members of his family flew out to Thailand and hired a private detective.

The body was eventually flown home for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead.

“I grew frustrated and tired at waiting for the Foreign Office to take action,” said Mrs Sinnott.

“That was despite claims by the Thai authorities they were doing all they could to trace his whereabouts.

“He was discovered in the sea off Pattaya on January 5 – the day after he was last seen alive in the town.

“We had been told by the British Government that the Thai authorities had carried out systematic checks at hospitals, police stations and morgues,” she said.

Mr Sinnott was born in Southport but raised in Anglesey.

A former pupil at Holyhead High School, he had lived and worked as a chief technician with a sewing machine company in Durban, South Africa, for 14 years.

Hours before he died he cashed travellers’ cheques worth 300 dollars and was last seen in a bar with an acquaintance. No cash was found on him. It wasn’t until 11 days after he disappeared that a friend, who had his passport and clothes, reported him missing.

A post mortem examination in Thailand found he died as a result of drowning but the examination also found marks on his body which the family says indicated he might have been involved in some kind of struggle or scuffle.

A follow-up post mortem, carried out at Bangor’s Ysbyty Gwynedd, failed to find anything to suggest his death was suspicious.

North West Wales coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones says it may be impossible to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Sinnott.

  5. Sawang Boriboon Foundation members rid Pattaya of Evil Spirits.

We joined Sawang Boriboon Foundation members on Saturday Night as they conducted an annual ritual around Pattaya City which utilized a special stick which is held by two men who are thought to be possessed. They lead followers around the City and stop at locations where there is thought to be evil spirits. A special ritual takes place to cleanse the area of the spirits and the group then move on to the next location guided by the two men and the stick. This ritual originates from China and is repeated by organizations around Thailand and the rest of Asia.

Early on Sunday Morning, 49 Monks attended a merit-making ceremony held on Pattaya Beach Road in front of the old pier near the entrance to Walking Street which was also organized by the Sawang Boriboon Foundation. Offerings were made to the monks in this ceremony which is known in Thai as “Tamboon”.

  6. Estonian man dies following attack on Walking Street

PATTAYA: -- A disturbing incident occurred on Walking Street in the early hours of Sunday Morning which was initially dealt with by the Tourist Police based on the street. Three men from Estonia made a complaint at the Tourist Police Mobile Unit regarding a confrontation with three Thai Men in Soi 15. It is thought the men were being ushered into a Show Bar but decided at the last minute that they did not want to go.

The Thai men became angry and a fight ensued. The men were told to make their way to Pattaya Police Station to make a report, however they decided to take matters into their own hands and went back to confront the Thai men. It is thought that more than 15 men set-upon the three Estonian Men.

One managed to run away, a second was hit over the head with a steal pole and a third man was stabbed in the leg with a broken bottle. A major artery in his leg was severed and he was rushed to Hospital. Later on Sunday he died from the injury according to medical staff at the Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

The incident, which is now a murder investigation, occurred only meters away from the Tourist Police Unit and is now being investigated by Pattaya Police and the Tourist Police as the hunt for the attackers continues. We understand that as of Monday Afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the attack.

  9. Israeli Drug Ring here in Pattaya, uncovered by Special Operations Police from Chonburi Police HQ.

We joined a team of Police Officers from the Special Operations Unit based at Chonburi Provincial Police Headquarters who served an arrest warrant on an Israeli National who failed to appear in court following a case involving class 1 narcotics. In House number 511 at the May Home Village, Police found their suspect, Mr. Yacov Cohen aged 53. After some discussions, he gave up some information relating to two further Israelis suspected of involving themselves in class 1 drug activities.

The Officers then made their way to house number 85/94 in Soi Arunothai, Central Pattaya. There appeared to be no one at the residence which is known to be occupied by Mr. Yisrael Krispin aged 47 from Israel. The officers forced entry and discovered a containeR hidden under a plant pot in the front porch which contained approximately 6,000 Ecstasy Tablets. An arrest warrant for Mr. Krispin has now been issued in relation to the discovery.

Police then went to a third location in South Pattaya. They were led to room number 3/386 at the Center Condotel just off the South Pattaya Road. The room is occupied by Mr. Vasco, also an Israeli National who refused to open the door for Police, despite numerous requests. With guns drawn, Police forced entry to the room and arrested Mr. Vasco. A search of the room uncovered a small quantity of a white powder, thought to be Cocaine and implements commonly used to smoke narcotics. This investigation is far from over and the two men caught so far will be processed in accordance with the Law.

  10. No test required in Pattaya if you have an IDP except for the three small tests in the office which are, depth perception, reaction test and colour test all done in 2 mins.

You will need a medical certificate despite some reports to the contrary, these can be obtained from any doctors surgery for around 100baht, you will also need a certificate of residence (Jomtien Immigration 200baht) or a work permit. Dont forget some pics, two for each licence and copies of your passport, main page, visa page etc.

Take a pen and if you can someone thta speaks Thai, around mid afternoon it gets quiet early mornings are normally mahem! I think thats it.

Sounds like I have all the paper needed to get a license when I get back next month.

Can someone please post either the directions to the driving license office or a link to a previous thread that does?

    Many thanks!

  11. The thread was given another chance for posts to get back on topic but it seems that this gesture was a waste of time.

Instead of discussing the topic the OP finds it more desireable to discuss Walking Street.

May I suggest that in future complaints about Best School are directed to the TEFL watch forum where your opinions can be aired.

hello pattayafox, i am the OP and im abit peeved that you pulled my last post in which i gave first hand visual evidence very relevant to this thread i used no real bad language in fact i said the person i directed this post at was a nice guy so why did you remove it ? it was calm meaningful debate based on 100 % fact just trying to get some truth to the many people involved .....is this not wot real forum debate is all about arguments (sometimes heated back and forth) not all need to talk only about restaurants , weather but more emotive ,real problems being faced by long term residents living in Thailand (9yrs here for me unbroken service). my sons education is of the utmost importance . i have received many personal msgs thanking me for bringing this to the attention of other parents i just cant figure out why you chose to decimate the posts on this thread. thanks rambler .

May I say this to you rambler. Discussion of moderation issues is against the forum rules, but I will tell you that the thread was almost closed but instead I spent a considerable amount of time going through the posts and deleting and editing them where necessary in order for them to comply with the forum rules as I felt that there may still be some merit in continuing it.

I am not prepared to discuss this any further save to say that certain members are very lucky that I did not hand out warnings or suspensions.

  15. English man found dead inside his Niran Grand Condo Apartment.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Tanagrit from Pattaya Police Station was called to room number 521/494 at the Niran Grand Condo in Soi Arunothai, Central Pattaya early on Wednesday Morning to investigate a foreign fatality. Inside the bathroom of the apartment, the body of Mr. Scott Martin Hibberd aged 49 from England was found by a security guard and a friend of the deceased. The alarm was raised when Mr. Hibberd failed to answer telephone calls. His friend, Mr. Leslie Hall, became concerned further when he failed to answer the door on Wednesday Morning. A security Guard at the complex gained entry to the room when the body of Mr. Hibberd was discovered. Police were told that Mr. Hibberd was an active man who would often be seen at the communal swimming pool. It is thought he died of natural causes; however there was no indication in the room that the man was suffering from any illness. For this reason, the case will remain open until the results of a post mortem examination are known. The British Embassy in Bangkok are aware of the case.

  16. Ok folks it seems that all that you want to do is discuss the merits of parrots, their proprietors and their owners expertise which I am sure is not what the OP intended when he posted the pics.

If the topic is not worthy of further pertinent additions then maybe it should be closed.

Please no further discussion of parrots here.

There is a pets forum which would seem to be the appropriate place for such discussions.

    Thanks.
