  1. In Chiang Mai it is a Toktaw, and it is a Gheko, they do more good than harm so I would leave alone - They do have a habit of taking a rather large dump now and again, but they are pretty efficient killers of unwanted pests.

We have some rather big ones in our house, I saw one run down a support beam and take an 8 inch centipede in one mouthful. Besides, didn't you know that if you count the amount of times it goes "TOKTAW" you will win the lottery. (According to Thais) - Thais seem to be terrified of them, my wife has this phobia that they are going to jump on you and inflict a terrible bite that you then need to go to the hospital with (As the Toktaw will not let go) and have it surgically removed.

Leave alone, they won't bother you, I like them, they are quite amazing. Have you ever tried to remove them from what they are clinging to? They have a better grip than superglue.

  2. Nasty as no doubt these things are, it needs to be kept in perspective. Australia, which has loads of these buggers has reported around 63 deaths since 1884!!! That is less than one person a year.

Whereas, if you look at the USA, 50 people or more die every year from allergic reactions to insect bites/stings.

  3. Your job is too complicated - have a beer, relax, and find a more peaceful one.

This is just the application to get the permits, visas, contracts, and all the other stuff to get me there - The real shit seems to be waiting for me in the factory! (I know for a fact that no one else wants this, they have UK engineers, Singaporean engineers, Chinese engineers - no one wants to touch this, so it does sound like a few months of fun if nothing else) I used to do the same sort of thing back in 1997-2004, it might be complicated but there is never a dull day.

  4. If you are on an F type visa then you are only visiting and no reason for you to pay any Chinese taxes.

Agree with whybother. If you structure it properly then perhaps no reason to pay any taxes.

I am also on an F type visa but mine is a 2 year multi entry (I think only available from UK) - but each entry is only a maximum of 30 days - are you sure you can get 90 days as has changed if so?

You do not say where you will be working but I am in Guangzhou so if you need any help/advice let me know.

I worked 10 years ago in Shanghai, always on an F visa for a British Company, I had multiple entry F visas for 12 months with absolutely no limit of stay. My earlier visas were the old stamped visas, double entry 30 day limit. After a year or so the visas were relaxed to the point that me and my entire family (Wife AND 3 month old son) were travelling and staying in China on 12 month F visas with no limit on the length of stay - However, we sort of deliberately withheld this from my employer, which afforded me to avoid staying more than 180 days and got me and the family a run to HK every six months.

I have heard that it is possible to get a 90 day stay, but not usual. The other thing I recall was being able to enter China on a 30 day visa then you could go to the Public Security bureau and have this extended by another 30 days, but something reminds me that they might actually cancel the remaining entries on the original visa...it has been such a long time, but I have found Shanghai Visas in my older passports where they have "00" for the number of entries. Thanks for the info though, appreciated.

  5. This is a weird one, I cannot find any really accurate info not even any hard or fast rules from my employer.

I am UK citizen, non resident for over 10 years. I live in Thailand, on a Thai marriage extension and have been here about 10 years.

I have been approached by a former employer - They are based in the UK. They want me to work for them for a period of 6 months or if all goes well maybe even years.

Here is where it gets complicated, they want me to work for them in China, (The way it is worded is a bit underhand really as I will be travelling on an F Visa, so without a work permit) Also I will leave China after approximately 3 months and return to Thailand, get a new visa then back to China for 3 months.)

The last part of the complication is they want to use their head office to pay me into my Thai bank - The head office is in Singapore, and payment is in US Dollars.

It looks like they think they need me to pay Singapore taxes, me I am not sure - anyone here with any experiences that might help me out.

I don't mind paying Sing Tax as it is 15%, and I know Thailand has a tax treaty with Singapore so I shouldn't get taxed twice. China on the other hand does not, and I guess in a period of 12 months I will be well over the 180 day tax rule - HEADACHE!!!

  6. The Kasikornbank website says about skimming, in part, “For any losses suffered, practices adhered to by all commercial banks will be applied for losses resulting from skimmers installed at any ATM. [if] the losses are deemed as not resulting from the mistake or negligence of cardholders, card-issuing banks will be responsible for the losses.”

Best of luck with this bank policy. I had 50,000 baht skimmed about 18 months ago from Kasikorn bank and I had really no explanation or interest from them in my loss. Too bad was their reaction. I cancelled my ATM card and only use my book for transactions. Sure it's a pain, but better than the worry about fraud.

Got to be more than careful here! I have never had nor will ever get an ATM card - I have suffered the inconvenience for over 10 years (but I can get to a SCB Bank that is open even on a Sunday - yes it is a 30KM round trip) but have never had a baht nicked. I simply do not trust the banks, their staff or anyone else when it comes down to access to cash. - Your experience just backs up my position - They will try and say it was you.

  7. The part they left out was that the red ant eggs aren't exactly cheap.

I would hazard a guess they cost more than a similar volume of chicken eggs.

Perhaps he thinks people should go out and harvest them for free.

You aren't kidding there! Pound for pound the ant eggs are way more expensive than hens eggs.

Maybe they should get Abhisit to push for a law to sell the ant eggs by the kilo rather than by the dozen.( Before him and that fat swine Suthep are prosecuted for their greed and murder) - Toktaws seem to fetch a good price here too, especially to the Chinese - I know they aren't insects but they were on the TV the other day saying they were getting 10K Baht for a large lizard???? (Can anyone verify that? - I didn't believe it at the time, but the locals here swear that the Chinese are buying these things for crazy prices)

They could probably get Shinawatra to set up a department to Grade Ant Eggs into Size 0, 1,2,3 and employ another few thousand more beuracrats

They could set up a market where the pubic lice of the infected could be deep fried with a little ginger and garlic and chilli to school children, providing they don't leave them to die of heatstroke on the schoolbus.

These tosspots need to get their priorities in order.

  8. We had a net like that at our place, but it seemed to catch small birds of prey. I didn't know it was there until my parents visited and i was showing them the land. It never returned after I complained about it.

This net is almost like hair, you don't even see it until you walk into it, the birds that were trapped were those STUPID BLOODY LITTLE DOVE LIKE BIRDS, purple freckled chest - barely move out of the way for you in a car...they are really just too trusting. They even come up into the bottom of our house to eat the old rice, despite having 9 cats, luckily the cats are too bloody lazy to chase them. They look like small Turtle doves.

  9. re

These birds are not much bigger than a house sparrow, how on earth can you get a meal from that?

i might be wrong but i think they are selling them to

the sellers in the temples where the thais release them to

    make merit : (

    dave2

Guess so yes, so the people can keep fooling Buddha for their own feelgood and think they will be rewarded and win lotteries. ifQdCt0mkxHHs.gif

But Buddha ain't stupid and one day he will let them know. Birds will rule and xxxx all foolish people on their head once a day, for the rest of their miserable life !

Where I am, they generally don't release the birds in the manner mentioned. I have seen it at the bigger temples and larger towns, but I think here it is a matter of food, or maybe as a caged bird to sing them a song!

  10. Well done for saving the birds and slashing the nets . . . I hope the birds don't eat anything covered in Roundup. sick.gif

Yes we always know when someone has been spraying near our property when dead birds start appearing in the garden.

Sent from my GT-I9003 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

I use Roundup as it is "supposed" to be one of the safer weedkillers, it is supposed to degrade when it hits the soil, I don't get problems with dead birds after using it. I can only trust what it says on the Data Sheet - I could however save considerable expense and buy a Thai local version, which probably kills everything that it contacts in the next 20 years. I do actually try to be careful.

I like birds, we never had any here before, it took almost 7 years to get to where we are now, we have birds everywhere, despite the odd bit of collateral damage by the cats, but that is a damned site better than a bird strangling itself and maiming itself in a tangled mass of net, it is absolute torture.

I will check my place every night, and I will slash and trash every net or bird trap I find. I will still continue to use Roundup unless someone can tell me otherwise, like I say, I don't find any poisoned birds on my land, only birds killed by Thais in a horrible manner!

I would go along with that if the birds weren't so tangled and maimed or even left for dead - This is sick man, kill it if you are going to eat it, don't leave it there for hours suffering.

  12. Much like any government or municipal funded project. Good enough budget to pay for a quality project, but once the coffee money has been taken out then we are lucky if a poor quality facility is even completed.

Not wrong there! They started building a road out here 8 years ago, it is only about 5KM, they keep putting tarmac on top of sand and mud, the road has craters on it like the moon, it had holes in it even before they opened it. Do the same people that build these projects get awarded the maintenance contracts?- it seems like a job for life.

  13. Maybe try a different approach and try and educate her, rather than fill her full of fear .

...and rather than filling even more threads at Thai Visa that generate such comments as "there is nothing more obtuse to me than the Thai attitude..."

Your wife is not all Thai people and Thai people do not all think or feel the same about every subject under the sun, as the on-going political divide should demonstrate.

What happened to the fish is unfortunate, but I doubt you've helped the situation by ridiculing her at home and now for all the world to see in a public forum. I wonder if you were married in your home country if you'd write a letter to the local newspaper ranting about all the things your wife does that don't fit in with your world-view.

    >>Glad you appreciate her luck...I try to tell her everyday how lucky she is, but she never seems to understand! Thanks for the upvote!

I'm guessing here, but I think the person who mentioned how lucky your wife was to have you as a husband, might have been a bit sarcastic, but I'm sure a perceptive man like you figured that out.

Your powers of perception amaze me! You provide me with a great introspective of myself!

  14. The thing is you selected her and not all Thais are like that. There are plenty sensible ones around.

Damned if I even managed to find any (male or female).

Does your mother know of your attitude about her fellow Thais?

I didn't marry her mother so <deleted> should I care? They seemed to think I was going to be an open ended cash maschine when her old man got throat cancer.....well, lets just say he is well dead and buried!

  15. How odd, my wife (a Buddhist too) says a Buddhist can kill any animal provided it is to be eaten, and that the sin is in killing but not consuming. If she's right your wife is in deep dooodooo. But just tell her to convert to Catholicism a couple of minutes before she dies and apologise for the sin, and all will be well !!!

Well, I never heard that one before!

My wife will blame anything other than herself when shit hits the fan.

She once put my jacket in the washing maschine when my new mobile phone was in one of the pockets, and yes, it was completely buggerred, but to this day she still maintains that it was the washing mascine that broke it and not her!

I just cannot get my head around how Thais will let something (Animal or Husband) to suffer an agonizing death rather than just put it out of its misery??

As for Susreno - no mate, I am indeed not without sin, I try to get by the best I can, no one is without sin and I have done a lot of things I am not proud of, so I am not casting any stones, just putting across a point of view. Besides, I do not believe in the Catholic Doctrine that if you confess all you will be forgiven, it is a cowards way out. What I have reaped, I believe I will sow! There is no suych thing as Divine forgiveness, you make shit, you get shit!

  16. What a lucky woman to be married to a smart Western guy like you !!thumbsup.gif

Glad you appreciate her luck...I try to tell her everyday how lucky she is, but she never seems to understand! Thanks for the upvote! Maybe when she is reborn as a half eaten catfish she could maybe hook up with you! You could both swim around in an airless poisoned fertilized tank of shit for a couple of days in agony before you eat each others heads out of desperation before you both die a rather unpleasant death. But never mind....you were being "Taken Care Of"

Why on earth would you accept live fish that you had no intention to kill to put them into a tank of poison and leave them to die a slow lingering death? What part of this do you fail to grasp?

If she had hit them over the head and cooked them I would have had no problem.

The problem here is that someone gave them to her that was from a "Higher Caste" and she could not say no! So, despite all of the morality and humanity, they would rather torture and kill a fish instead of LOSING FACE to some retard that they believe is higher up on the food chain from them...sorry mate, it has nothing to do with Westerners or being smart, it is about poor people from the North that are continuously treat as slaves!

  17. Well, here is the responsibility and the consequences that Thais seem to feel. It is crazy really.

My wife (who believes that she is Bhuddist - hurt nothing kill nothing...blah blah blah...) was given 3 LIVE Catfish - Pla Douk the other day. She was given them to eat - but because of their "Beliefs" she couldn't kill them. So what do they do? They stick the three fish in an old oil drum that I use to water the plants. The oild drum is used for irrigation by me, I add fertilizer, insect reppelent and various other chemicals.

So she tells no one, she gets 3 fish, that she has no intention to kill or eat, drops them into a tank full of chemicals and plant food and walks away!

I go out tonight to water the plants, as I approach the tank the smell is disgusting. At first I thought a snake had got into the tank... all I could see was white / silvery scales tangled in the watering can, after I got the can out, I found it was a dead catfish, half eaten, head missing.....

The water was black and offensive. Me and my son used the water up and then drained the tank, there was another 3 BIG catfish still alive in the filthy water. (We took them out and let them go free in the local klong)

Confronting my wife, she reckons she was "Taking Care" ....taking care of what? Are these people mental? Why would you take 3 living fish, that were given as a gift to be eaten, that you could not or would not kill nor eat, dump them in a tank full of chemicals and leave them cooking slowly in the hot sun only to die at a horribly slow rate, it is torture.

Pointing the finger at her and shouting "EVIL EVIL....BHUDDHA SEES ALL - You will come back as that fish" seems to instill a bit of guilt, but not enough. (It is however funny enough to make her panic - to the point that she wanted to look for the dead fish to put it in the river......a bit late in my book as it seems to be eaten in half!)

She washed a pair of jeans I had a few years back - there was a Nokia Phone in the pocket. Despite all the reasoning, she will still insist that she didn't break the phone, the Washing Maschine Did!

Anyway, I reckon I have at least two days worth of guilt trip to play with! Karma! What you make you get!

Then try and turn around and try to say they were "Taking Care"???? <deleted>!

She is not exactly happy tonight after I told her that Bhudda sees everything and that she is EVIL and killed the fish in a terrible way...she is busy trying to blame it on anyone else.

I don't really care about the fish, but at least I would have killed them outright, not left them suffering. Luckily it is my Sons 12th Birthday today so he kind of feels he has gained a bit of Karma for bothering to release the survivors into the Klong. (Have you ever tried to catch one of these buggers with your hands??? they are as strong as an ox! and sharp too...the biggest one flipped itself almost 30 metres across dry soil into a bunch of trees!

I really hope that the Thais take care of me in the same manner!

  18. If you are a foreigner your name should not be in blue book but only in a special yellow book (if you want) - if placed in blue book it would appear to be a District Office mistake. As for help for visa/work it makes no difference but can be helpful when need proof of residence - you get a non-immigrant O visa on basis of marriage with marriage certificate and perhaps wife ID card copy/passport copy and her blue book copy.

Money must be in your account in a Thai bank for the required 2 months each year prior to extension of stay (if using marriage extension) or 3 months (retirement - after the first time being 2 months).

You would have signed paperwork that money belonged to your wife only so would only be yours in case of inheritance (and have to be sold) AFAIK.

Your name will appear in the blue book if you are married to a Thai lady and you are named as the father of a child born in Thailand to your Thai wife. It will do nothing in the least to assist you in staying here. (I do believe it might help you with an opportunity to a work permit) Thailand is not exactly "Politically Correct" not a bad thing in general, it is better than being overrun with immigrants and foreigners. Sadly, it doesn't allow for assimilation or integration for foreign spouses.

  19. Possibly of greater importance for the OP is to get a replacement passport arranged.

I have heard many stories of passports being scrutinized at immigration in various countries when they have been damaged/gone through the wash.

In some cases travel has been refused.

    thank you everyone ....

I will sure go get a new passeport, it's just that i don't live in BKK.

I just hope I will be able to get my extension with my old passeport if not I will have to go out the conutry may 20th to get a new Non-O visa sad.png

If you can tell immigration your date of arrival and even better the time and flight, they will have you on record already and be able to issue you with a replacement arrival card, it isn't a big problem, people lose them all the time. Mine is 12 year old and looks like an illegible rag - crazy really having to keep this stupid piece of paper throughout your stay here. I don't believe it was ever designed for long term stay.

  20. I guess they knew they were not getting their cash back or even the bike, so probably the next best thing was a bit of SATISFACTION and a bit of RETRIBUTION! - It all depends upon your outlook. Not saying it right or wrong, but in a way, I can understand the motive. However, the fact that the two retards managed to shoot totally innocent retards, then the police should lock them up with something like attempted manslaughter or willful endangerment of life ( Charges that could be brought against most Thais driving on any road on any given day)
