  1. Hi Guys,

So my wife and I have quickly learnt that herbs and veg in general does not seem to keep long out here in LOS, even in the fridge! So I have been looking into setting up a hydrophonic grow area on my rear balcony. Space is limited but it is unused so I could easily cover it with sun netting.

    2014-02-23103221copy_zpsfb1899dc.jpg

I have some information on the prices for various setups but I am bit unsure as to which type is best to grow the following:

    • Cilantro (Corriander)
    • Basil
    • Thyme
    • Oregano
    • Rosemary
    • Dill
    • Mint
    • Holy Basil, Thai Sweet, Lemon Basil

Basically the herbs could grow back in the UK.

It would be nice to be able to grow other things like tomatoes, spring onion, lettice etc however the main focus for the setup would be a constant supply of fresh herbs listed above.

The setups I have researched are NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), EBB and Flow, DFT (Deep Flow Technique), DRF (Dynamic Rout Flow) nad Drip and Creep. I am edging towards NFT simply because I know people at work that have that setup, although they use it more for greens and leafy salad lettice etc. I should in theory be able to install a 2 Metre NFT Kit found here: http://www.ackhydrofarm.com/products=id9_eng.php?page=idp9_eng.php&accessories_eng=accessories_eng.php, providing it can stradle over the aircon unit (64mm high) with the legs either side. This would cost 6500 baht for setup then I guess nutrients etc.

If anyone could offer any advice I would really appreciate it as I am very new to this way of growing. Cheers thumbsup.gif

  2. Sorry to sound silly but how would I go about either?

I guess there are not online service maps like in the UK so would have to call the companies and ask? I only know of true here though.

I also assume true won't offer cable internet and TV unless it is already hooked up to the building?

  3. Hi guys,

I am living in a rented 7th floor flat in Bangna and am with true internet and phone. Now they say that as I am so far from the exchange that 3m is the fastest I can get. Checking my router stats supports this.

I was wondering if anyone knows any alternative providers that might mean I can get faster? I think cable is out as it is not hooked up to our building. Would another ADSL provider have a closer exchange / node or do they all use the same? Thanks

  4. As the title really. I can call internationally but sending and receiving internationally don't work. No error message or anything, just looks like it sent. I am using the +44788....... Etc but not working. I called AIS and he said should work and will get back to me tomorrow.

Any ideas what's going on? I am on the package where I pay 499 baht a month I think and get 1gb internet.

  5. To be clear I meant buy a pre built one the small IT shops sell. I assume that is the parts cost with a few hundred baht to put it together and test?

Also how do prices for complements compare to online back in the UK? I would usually check part prices on my phone on dabs.com or novatech.co.uk, but if they are generally cheaper or more expensive here the comparison is pointless.

  6. Wow so many suggestions thank you guys. At present I am not after an entire suit, although may be for a friends wedding soon. However trousers for work and some well fitted shirts are high on my list of to do's so will be heading to some listed soon.

I am out Bangna way so may try the ones near On Nut or opposite Seacon just for a nosey and go there. Are most tailors clearly priced or is it a haggle job?

  7. Hi Guys,

I am looking for any pointers on where in BKK I could get some shirts and trousers tailor made at an affordable price. I know you get what you pay for, so not looking for dirt cheep but would be willing to pay in the region of 3000 tbh per shirt, and upto 5000 tbh for well made trousers.

I have suit and shirt tailored from back in the UK just before I moved out so could provide those for the tailor to use as a template providing they don't rip them apart. They fit very well and I would like something similar. I hear one of the main criticisms of tailors here is that they make the suits to unfashionable cuts, american etc so would like to avoid that, although I do not expect an Italian or Savile Row piece.

I am a broad build but not fat (debatable), so normally shirts that fit my collar size (18.5") are too long in the sleeve and very baggy around the waist, so it ends up looking boxy and folded into trousers.

I visited little India recently whilst exploring Chinatown but nothing really stood out as being a quality tailor so thought I would ask about here.

    Cheers

  8. In the book it's page 102 and called Puu Phat Phong Karii, I have always seen it spelt as Pu Pad Pong Kari - Crap with Yellow Curry powder:

    https://www.google.co.th/search?q=convert+90+usd+to+tbh&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&gws_rd=cr&ei=zknaUr-zPM6FrAez0oG4Dg#q=pad+pong+kari&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&safe=off

Lovely dish when I have ordered it out, although I prefer it with just the crap meat rather than in the shell.

    Edit:

Oooops I just checked and it's not the book you mentioned, I have World Kitchen Thailand.

  9. That's the one biggrin.png. My wife has cooked a few recipes from their now and they were great so I thought I would give a few a bash. The Kaeng Kung Mangkawn also lists Coconut Cream but I have not really seen that out here. Did you get the cream from fresh coconut flesh or can you reduce down some normal coconut milk a bit?

Have you cooked the Pad Pong Kari? I love that dish when eating out and hoping to cook it soon.

  10. Hi guys,

I am looking to buy some red curry paste from my local market and just wondered how you pronounce it in Thai? I wasn't sure if it is a direct translation น้ำพริกแกงแดง or naphrik Kaeng daeng?

The recipe just calls for red curry paste so doesn't specify a region etc.

    Cheers

  11. The GB is how much storage the console has. 500GB seems to be the standard and is more than enough as long as you are not downloading lots of trailers, movies etc. Some games install themselves onto the HDD so they load faster etc, but still require the disc in the drive to work.

If you ever run out (unlikely) you can always replace the HDD fairly easily yourself with a bigger one.

  12. Hi Guys,

I am fairly competent in PC building and have built my own rigs back in the UK. Unfortunately it is a bit more tricky here in Thailand as in the UK I would always research the prices online of components, here online stores are few and far between.

My first question is that if I shop at say Pantip etc and buy the individual components how will the prices compare to components I would buy in the UK online?

Secondly as labour is cheap over here is it even worth building my own PC compared to buying a pre built gaming PC buy one of the IT stores. They will have done the legwork with compatibility and I guess the PC may be cheaper as its selling all the items in one go?

  13. Ok so the advise I should have been given was be patient and.... Revise your theory!

So as I have a UK driving licence and an international Driving Permit the process of getting my Thai Car Licence was pretty straight forward. I just had to do the physical test of colour blindness, reaction time etc. the inky thing is how long you have to wait for each stage.

Now as I do not have a UK bike licence I was told I needed to do the E-test for road theory and then a bike test around the back. Although I never got that far as I failed the theory 2 times in one day so wasn't allowed another retest in the day. I got 22 out of 30 and needed 23!!!! Not happy and the 200 baht clearly in my hand as I passed back the electronic card for the test did not tempt her.

I did ask the Thai women from my work who organises the licence trip if I needed to revise anything and she didn't say I did so I was completely unprepared for it, also the wording in English is confusing to say the least. Apparently I have 90 days to retake it.

Does anyone know an online resource to practice my Thai road theory for the bike licence?

  14. Hi Guys,

Thought I would post my experience of my Car and Bike Licence Tests tomorrow in BKK. Luckily I will be going with a group of western colleagues and a Thai speaking organiser which has all been setup by my employer.

All I have been told to bring is:

"1. Passport with Non Immigration Visa
    2. Work permit
    3. Thai driver license (Old Thai driver license ,In case you want to re-new )
    4. Medical certification( You just go to the clinic or the hospital and tell a doctor you need it for your Thai driving license.)
    5. Driver’s license at your city (In case you want to get a new one)

( Both Original and photocopy , Please sign your name on every page )"

I have 2 photocopies and Originals of 1,2,4, and 5 (Car License - Card, Counterpart and International Driving Permit). I also took photocopies of the backs of the main documents and signed everything as well as 2 passport photos I would use back in the UK.

Hopefully this is everything I need. Any idea how long this process will take given I am going for both Car and Bike? Cost still 105 and 55 baht? Anything I need to revise?

Meeting at work at 7:30 so early start, wish me luck!

  15. Hi Guys,

I recently posted about looking for a website to buy a cheap Casio I was after and MESmith was kind enough to point me to www.lazda.co.th where I placed an order.

I am not after a more rugged watch like the Casio DW05600E and rather than traipsing all around town was wondering if anyone new of any other websites based in Thailand that sell these kind of G shock watches. Importing takes time and possible tax's, and shops seem pot luck.

Any suggestions or links for sites much appreciated, Thailand's online shops seem hard to stumble across.

    Cheers

  16. thanks for that MESmith good price and one ordered smile.png

I now also want a Casio DW-5600E but there are none on that site. Does anyone know any other good websites here in Thailand for watches and the like? Google tends to find UK or US based sites that cost fortune to ship.

    Thanks

  17. Sorry for the late reply, busy busy busy.

In the end we used the BA baggage allowance or 2 cases upto 32kg each and paid for an extra baggage at about £55 i think. This got most of our essentials out, the rest we stored at the inlaws into boxes labelled such as priority etc. We have just had a few visitors so that allowed us another case of 20kg with their airline which we skyped with the family to put bits in we wanted, as well as stuff we ordered online you cant get out here in Thailand without paying arm and a leg in postage etc.

Over all we bought most of the stuff we needed out here like TV, cooking utensils etc and had mates bring things like paella pan, aftershaves, cooking spice i cant get here.

Good luck with your move, we love it here :)
