As is often the case with this forum, posts have gotten way off topic, very fast...

What I'm gathering is that if I move quickly, I'm unlikely to face the same 1 year rental contract requirement elsewhere.  Also, there is no appeals process, otherwise someone would have mentioned it by now.

There IS an appeals process. It's called a brown envelope. It requires a modicum of discretion and common sense to process, otherwise you lose the appeal.

You are going to restaurants that cater to farung. So change where you go. Hit up a "Khao Gaeng" shop for some curry. Or get out of the tourist area and order a street side Krapow Mu. You will find what you are looking for, if that is the real Thai taste.

The trouble is, all that food is pre-cooked, and sitting rotting in the heat with flies everywhere. The turnover in food whilst high at peak, is not sufficient to ensure freshness. Then, look at the hygeine..... how are plates etc washed and dried.

If you have a strong constitution and are acclimatised to the bugs, you may get away with it for a while. Inevitably you will suffer at some point, as do the locals..... the penalty you pay for eating real Thai food. If you see it freshly cooked in a wok it is safer.

I have bought many different brands over the years and the best by far have been these brands in the picture.

All of these are five or more years old and still charge well, haven't swollen and perform excellently i use them in a portable electric shaver.

In terms of how to tell if they're genuine.

Buy them at well known reputable outlets Homepro, 7 11 and the like, if you buy online there's always the danger you'll get garbage as I can testify having done just that thinking something was a bargain and they turned out very poor performance.

Regarding price; if I recall correctly they're about 100+ baht each or thereabouts.

    Hope you find this helpful.

My friend had a similar one, mains powered and a lot heavier, but worked on the same principle. It worked brilliantly, having to be emptied several times a day in the fertiliser season. His cat knocked it off the counter and smashed it, I have never seen the same one for sale since. Having said that, there has never been quite the same need since...the fly population was decimated!
