  1. Sorry, I can't give info about an orphanage in Khon Kaen. Wifey and I went to an orphanage near Ubon ( Warin ) in a remote area yesterday. We are in a similar situation as you.....want to help out, but not sure how. I was speaking with one of the....( what do you call them? Parents, Teacher? Caretaker? ) staff that are taking care of the kids to find out how they "operate". What help, if any, do they get from the government etc. But with her broken english, I couldn't gather much information. On the way back home I was talking to my wife saying that I wish I could've taken a look at their rooms to see what they have or might be missing. It might be things as simple as crayons and a coloring book. Or while playing pingpong with them I noticed both their rackets were in bad shape.

I would suggest once you find out where an orphanage in your area is, to bring something simple with you and try to speak to one of the staff member and best even take a tour of the place to get a picture of the situation. Also, quite honestly, I don't think some money in the right hands would be a wrong thing to do either. I just can not imagine that one of the staff that take care of the kids day in and day out would pocket the money for themselves.

    Good luck.

  2. A bit off topic, but in regards to signage:

EVERY business sign has to have Thai script by law. Even 7/11, tesco, Big C. In most of these cases you won't notice it as it is written really small on those huge signs, to the point that it's barely readable if you do actual locate the Thai script on the sign.

As for taxation...not 100% sure on the exact detail, but it depends on how many farang letters it has and / or the size of those letters.

  3. Heaven Is Where:

    The French are the chefs
    The Italians are the lovers
    The British are the police
    The Germans are the mechanics
And the Swiss make everything run on time

    Hell is Where:

    The British are the chefs
    The Swiss are the lovers
    The French are the mechanics
The Italians make everything run on time

And the Germans are the police

  4. When taking somebody off social security, there is a form that needs to be filled out. you need the employees ID number, name, last day s/he worked and reason for leaving. If I remember correctly, there are 6 or 7 options for leaving.

    Off memory:

    1. Quit / resigned

    2. Retired

    3. Fired

    4. Transfer to other location

    5. Death

Can't think of the others right now. But if you need the name of the form or the exact options for reason of leaving, let me know and I'll look them up when I'm in the office.

To answer your question, I don't think your bookkeeper needs to contact her, if she voluntarily left. The only thing she may need from her is a copy of her ID...but you should already have that.

  5. Sorry, can't help you with a bus schedule....but how about rephrasing your question?

If you ask how much a Taxi from Morchit to Chaiyaphum costs, I am pretty sure you will get a bunch of replies as to why not just take a bus ( with a detailed time schedule, locations, where to eat before and after arriving, good places to stay, not to fall in love, don't buy a house etc etc etc :) )

Anyways, I hope someone is able to help you eventually.

  6. Martyjustice is spot on. The exchange rate at the Bangkok bank ( if you have a dollar account and thai account with them ) today was 33.55 per dollar. The official forex was 33.7x if i remember correctly.

Through Bangkok bank is the best / fairest exchange rate I have come across so far.

  7. need info from you all in Ubon, does the central mall show movies in english? I was there once on a shopping trip, asked the tickiting girl, but she didn't understand my question.

thanks for allowing me to jump into this thread.

Yes they do. Here is a link to their website / showtimes:

    http://www.majorcineplex.com/booking/search-results.php?cinemaId_1=85

Keep in mind that it is not always 100% accurate / up to date ( as mentioned in a previous post ).

If you look at the movie time listings, you will notice the language it will be on.

TH/EN = Thai with English subtitles

EN/TH = English with Thai subtitles

    TH/-- = Thai, no subtitles

    EN/-- = English, no subtitles

By the way, Sunee mall also has a movie theater and shows some movies in english

  8. There is no white fresh asparagus in the whole of Thailand, only the green type ' noo man farang'

That's clearly untrue. The Anantara hotel is currently advertising "Celebrate White Asparagus Season". The menu looks good. http://bangkok-riverside.anantara.com/uploads/promotions/Brio_White_Asparagus_Menu.pdf

Just a simple misunderstanding. FRESH White Asparagus he says is not available anywhere in Thailand. The Menu you posted advertises white asparagus but does not mention fresh white asparagus...so I would assume it is canned.

As to where to find White asparagus...to my surprise I saw canned white asparagus at a couple of small Thai/Chinese Bakery supply shops. This is in Ubon. I'm sure some of the Thai / Chinese Bakery supply stores in Bangkok would have that as well.

There are numerous hotels in Bangkok currently offering fresh white asparagus imported from Germany. These are seasonal offers. From memory, Conrad is another one. So no, it's not canned. The thought that somewhere of the standard of Anantara uses canned asparagus is, quite frankly, ludicrous.

I did not say that it was or was not canned...just assuming. However, if you believe that a high end hotel would not use canned vegetables or in this case canned asparagus is quite frankly, ludicrous. While high end hotels do use quality ingredients, they certainly do NOT make it a top priority. Besides working in a high end restaurant in southern California ( and having close connections with various hotel staff ), I also worked for a restaurant / hotel supplier for about year. We would for example deliver frozen Calamari and looking at the hotels menu it was labeled fresh calamari....just one of many examples I could give. Customers would rave how that was the best calamari they have ever had....the "trick" is how it is prepared, presented and the environment you are in.

Back to White Asparagus...good to know that Royal Farms has their own white Asparagus. I'll see if I can get a hold of some :)

  10. Hmmm, I just checked and it says that Major Cineplex in Khon Kaen is showing Avengers in English with Thai subtitles at 12:30 in theater 1.

I am checking on their iphone by the way.

Also, I noticed that the app is not always correct / up to date. I remember when Fast and Furious 7 came out, that all was showing was fast and furious 7 and mostly thai...in 7 theater rooms or so. Then walking past the timetable AT the theater, there were a few other movies showing as well.

  11. Wow, that seems like A LOT. A couple nights ago I had a few in the bedroom and in the bathroom...but not nearly as many as you have / had. I was thinking that maybe because I am on the 1st floor and they don't fly that high in masses, but remember seeing lots around street lights.

The bathroom by the way is an open window with a screen and I saw a few still stuck or trying to squeeze their way through the small gaps in the screen.

  12. I tend refer to it as 'Murder Island' or 'Rape-Murder Island'

Tell me a country, state, or province where rape and murder has never occurred??? Perhaps in your imagination
Never is not possible, but check out Liechtenstein. Not sure if they ever had a rape...
  13. I've worked in a steakhouse for many years in the US and learned it is better to send a steak to the customer slightly under-done than over done. If it's over-done and gets sent back, it's waste.

If it is under-done and sent back you can still throw it on the grill a few minutes. It happened several times that steaks get sent back because the ordered temperature wasn't correct. Upon inspecting the steak in the kitchen, it was perfectly done. We learned that the lighting played a major role in the decision if the steak was done correct or not. The dining area was dim lit ( correct english? lighty lit? ) with soft yellow light, but the kitchen was well lit with bright lights. Try explaining that to the customer when he sends his steak back... :)

Also, sometimes customers did not know their temperatures, but, sometimes we had it wrong too.

There are many different factors that involve the getting the steak temperature right...even an experienced cook/chef can get it wrong on occasion.

As for foreign owned restaurants getting the steaks wrong, I can't speak for all of them, but in my case it COULD happen, though I obviously try to avoid it....A foreigner/owner won't be in the kitchen the entire time the restaurant is open...so at times the -hopefully- trained Thai cook takes it upon themselves to grill a steak. A normal restaurant that has a steak or two on the menu won't get ordered as much, so the Thai cook doesn't have much experience with various temperatures and just guess when it's ready....or just grill it until it looks and feels like the sole of a shoe.

I would try to order the steak one notch less than you like and if it is under done ask the server / cook to throw it on the grill another 2 or 3 minutes....or however long you think it needs to reach your desired temperature. Not a great solution, but best I can come up with in / for Thailand.

  14. And today Dortmund confirmed that Thomas Tuchel will take over beginning July 1st.

Him or Klinsmann were my top choices, where as Klinsmann probably couldn't, because he coaches the U.S. Team and has a big project going on there.

So, I'm happy with the announcement.

Now hopefully Klopp will find a good club to work with.

  15. You got the right guy...she was talking about Tuchel. Sometime last season Tuchel ran in to a similar situation like Klopp and he questioned himself at Mainz. He announced he will not continue next season, even though his contract was valid another season. However, the Mainz Manager refused to neutralize the contract they had. He didn't want to let him sign for another club...so he was basically forced to take a sabbatical. End of this season he sat out his contract is available. He already refused Hamburg...maybe he knew about klopps situation ( Tuchel and Klopp are in constant contact ).

Everybody is guessing it will be Tuchel.

Nobody knows where Klopp will go. It's correct he had an interest for the Premier League....weather won't influence his decision. He's used to that from Germany :).

Even though he has pretty much all of Europe available, it wouldn't surprise me if he takes on a "mediocre" team like Tottenham.

I also just thought of Stuttgart...his hometown. They're struggling and need a new coach for the next season. That would be an option as well, if they can hold on to the 1 division.

  16. Hmmm <---- that was my initial thought.

Didn't hear him being an option until just now. I don't really much have an opinion, because I don't know him. Does he even speak German? I think that would be important to coach a team in German. Pep Guardiola learned German for a year before starting at Bayern Munich.

The person I would be most happy with ( given current situations and coach availability ) is Thomas Tuchel. He took over Mainz when Klopp moved from Mainz to Dortmund. Tuchel did a good job with Mainz and has similarities to Klopp.
