  1. I hate to travel in vans. That said, sometimes you have to. There are plenty of ways that the actual "hardware" can be improved for example make the seat belts actually accessible, usually tied so tight under the seat that it's impossible to loosen without pliers.
However, vans will always be highly unsafe because of the idiots behind the wheel.
That's where to start trying to make vans safer.
Unfortunately the govt can't see what's right in front of them!

  2. A simply appalling waste of  the Thai's population's taxes.

Their was never any intention of arresting this criminal, just a normal day in Thailand.

The nation of lies, bullshit and smoke and mirrors.

Not much of a waste of taxes really. They're paying all these people anyway. Doing this crazy job just keeps them occupied, otherwise they'd be doing nothing or maybe other wild goose chases.

You will see this term "create unrest and subverting STATE POWER many many times in the years to come. They are just warming you up to the phrase.

Quite so. The government hates the idea of an 'alternative' power in the country. A power that doesn't fit within it's strict scope of how things should be (ie, the power, and therefore the ability to make obscene money, should remain in the hands of the current elite).

Yes, get rid of that power, break it, and oh, by the way, we'll take care of that gold too . . . for the good of the country . . .

  4. That video shows a scene where the driver is 10% at fault. The girl unfortunately has had zero training about how to stay alive on a motorcycle and just plowed straight on, despite good visibility of what the car was doing, indicators or not.

And the 10% is the insurance company rule of thumb - if you were there then you're at least that much at fault.

Sad for the girl, I hope she learns something from it.

  5. Not really needed.  In Thai culture its highly likely and culturally accepted that the children go back to the villages to be raised by the grandparents while the adult kids pursue their careers.  The parents subsidize the grand-parents to care for the kids.  It's a win-win.  Which I agree with: children need to be brought up within their family units, not by some stranger, families bringing up family eliminated the need for government funded programs to pay surrogates to care for children which means less need for tax revenues to fund something that is not needed by Thai society.  Western societies could learn a lesson from the Thai model.

The picture you paint about childen going back to villages is more and more an idealised myth. Sure it happens, but most Thai people don't come from villages anymore, they come from large cities and especially BKK.
    Times are changing.
And what of life in the village? Again it's idealised and not necessarily the answer. Take a look around!
  6. You must be blind, almost every other house has asbestos tiles on extensions and asbestos walls cutting them off from next door, it's all over the place. Siam Cement makes it all.

He's probably not blind and has seen all that. The point is, is it cement sheet or asbestos cement sheet?
Here in OZ my new house has cement sheet walls. No asbestos though.
Asbestos was used to add fibre to the mix for strength. These days other materials are used. They cost a little more.
However, obviously in Thailand the asbestos lobby wins, for two reasons. 1. Money changes hands and 2. Money changes hands.
  7. I wonder why they don't ask the PM to use first his special power on the Rolls Royce case.....:coffee1:

That's because the PM has already waved his hand and dimissed the RR case as "in the past" so don't bother. No doubt some mates involved.
Interesting that the group has gone public, we'll see how long their jobs last. Or maybe we won't see.
    Anyway, good on 'em!
Didn't I read that Thai have a bunch of newish planes rotting in a paddock somewhere?

Just 2 weeks ago, i saw documentary about plastic. IN which was told we dump  8 million tons/year of plastic in the oceans !!

So question is, who the <deleted> is doing that?! I guess it must be some criminal (mobs) organizations, getting rich on waist disposals.

As 8 million tons !!! every year !!! IT is not just a plastic bag . Can you imagine the volume of it ?!

There are very big islands of plastic floating in the oceans, but ok no one seems to care and start investigations.

Maybe this one is from Koh Samui, as their incinerator broke down and of course not being fixed. Or did  they now?

"So question is, who the <deleted> is doing that?! I guess it must be some criminal (mobs) organizations, getting rich on waist disposals."

Not that really, it's that practically every human on the planet behaves badly towards his nest - he/she s**ts in it. We humans do that, it's how we are. Eventually lots of it finds it's way into the sea.

  9. Never can understand the notion of killing someone because they have dudded you. It means that you have given up any possibility of getting your money back.

It's a bit like that old bogey trotted out by rednecks  "better dead than red". That was always about refusing the lessons of history - work on change and it'll eventually come about.

In this case though there has to be a lot more to the story than just money.

    The "rage" started with him.

"It" began with an impatient Thai driver hurling what I believe, in Thailand, is an extremely abusive epithet at a van driver and a student, because he has had to wait 1min 12 secs while the van driver and the student got something from the shop.

Just for good measure he gives the van driver a good blast on the horn when he subsequently passes him.

    Would you do that...........in Thailand?

Maybe you would if, like him, you were carrying an illegally held gun in your vehicle.

Typical behaviour of many people in Thailand, park in front of someone, on footpaths, in driveways, whatever, to please yourself, don't have to worry about inconveniencing someone else. No wonder Suthep blew his stack.

For the van people, they were never taught the old adage "sticks and stones might break my bones, but names will never hurt me".

Unfortunately for Suthep, his reaction was over the top and he shot and killed a person. So, it's murder. He's gotta get his just desserts for that. Shooting up into the air would have sufficed surely. The remaining van people should be taken to task by the law also for their bad behaviour.

No lift to raise vehicle, so as to check tie rods, pull wheels to check break pads, etc in sight. Where is a mechanic who knows where to look for potential failure points? Looks like about 10 people looking or are inside the van instead of doing a safety inspection. Wonder if the majority even know how to check tires for wear and balance.

I have heard the mini vans referred to as rolling coffins by some of the more observent drivers on Thai highways. Some rigged up on LPG even furnish the fire for the departed.

I'd suggest that they are not doing a safety check at all. More like the Chonburi transport chief is full of air and bluster, looking for a transfer to a higher position.

While inside I hope they untie the seat belts to make them useable.

And while they are checking the suspension (ha ha, they won't even get underneath as you suggest), I hope they'll check to see if it has been illegally "improved" by some backyard mechanic who knows better than an army of Toyota designers. I've noticed that many vans are a lot closer to the ground than they should be, and that's before they are (over)loaded.

    Coffins, for sure.
