Many posters have made good points.
As hard as I am on Thais, I do NOT think they are incapable. Surely, they have similar potential to us all.
I truly belive the biggest issue facing them is that the Thai (mostly Chinese) elites do not want the country to grow at the expense of their power and authority.
The Thai Chinese have done an absolutely marvelous job of coaxing the country into their personal playground. Who would give up that status? Not me.
Excellent analogy ! Only problem is, it will take me at least a few hours before I can get the images of Chucky Dolls, barbed wire and locked gates out of my very vivid imagination!

Some Thai friends of mine were complaining about exactly the same thing this morning. It seems Rimping has joined the govt scheme ! Not smart they should have them go through certain tills !! Rimping has a pretty loyal customer base, they would be stupid to <deleted> them off just for the govt freebie promotion.

If you think critical about what really this paper is, you know that.
nobody ask Yinn. I am genius.
some people are lazy brain, so people think to much.
QuoteAssistant Professor Wilert Puriwat, dean of the Chulalongkorn Business School, which is allied with the WEF, said that, If Thailand wants to improve its ranking, labour skills must be improved.
Well the research seems to be at least partly in conjunction with Chula , so maybe take it up with them.
PS Anyone who really is a genius, does not say they are.

As said, I think not.
As I said to another optimistic person; how many years in the Thai tourism business ??
I can understand how from the outside it may all look rosy, but most in the tourism sector think otherwise.

Held by whom ?
The cafe, the internet provider ???
Ah a search , seems to suggest this is in fact very recent and very much in international news!

for suers on this forum there have been hundreds of posts forecasting "the end is nigh" for Thailand - all this says is that the posters don't understand that isn't how it works.
There may be dips, even crashes but they isn't the end of it.
Yes Thailand is riven with incompetence, lack of democracy and corruption ut it doesn't spell disaster - all it says is that at the moment they have got it wrong and failed to anticipate. When the "disaster" does happen, these people won't recognise it
That could be interpreted as not being able to decipher what is happening at the present moment. Personally I think we are already in the disaster, although beginning stages.
The dips and crashes were things of the past, such as bird flu, coup etc. The balance is way against Thai tourism at present.
Of course some people will be OK but I think Thailand is heading for a very severe recession/depression. In the past Thailand has still had an environment and culture that was in tact enough to draw in a sizeable amount of tourists. This is now stacked against it too.

QuoteThe rule takes effect at the end of the month
As they are talking about the rules that come into effect end of this Oct. they must be talking about those applying for Non O-A visas.

Seriously what is the point , when you have such a hierarchical system and its stultifying effects. Thanatorn showed some creative ideas and look at the response that he got. Thailand clearly wants the world accolades given to creativity but only wants them with a govt. approved stamp.

Pretty much all the new build hotels are Chinese funded. So yes you have pretty much no cheap accommodation left .
Next year a drastic increase in local taxes is anticipated with very little information forthcoming in order for people to prepare. It looks like the perfect storm. Govt says we want money, business owners say we don't have any , govt says we still want money. What could possibly go wrong!

Goes to show how far the country has sunk into desperation, you have to give people a one thousand baht coupon to get them to spend 1,000 Bt. An absolute desperate measure to stimulate cash flow which is indicative as to how bad the situation is.

Good.
Very good.
Wonderful!! Good deal.
Up to them. I not care.
Then we get the free building!
If not use we get the money AND the building!
Not think Chinese system will crash. Chinese are very clever financial.
with the normal rent place, only about 3-6% return.
but if holiday rent, it 10-25%.
If 10% for 30 year, will be ok.
The whole propping up of the economy through Chinese investment and money channeling is looking rather similar to the Canadian scenario; there are many articles on how money was laundered through Vancouver real estate.
It is a bit sad that you do not care and can only see the dollar signs. Unfortunately that reflects many peoples attitudes and is why many places have become less than desirable to visit or live in.

A few TAT videos and graphs are hardly good evidence for increasing tourism.
In fact I don't think tourism is much of a consideration in the scheme of things. Just consider the fact that Chinese pay for a 30yr lease , then pay rent on top of that and then building costs on top of that. You seriously think they can recuperate their money within 30 years. Looks more like a way to get around the financial restrictions on cash transfers from mainland China. It looks more like tourists are just a pawn in the game .
The problem for the Thais is when the Chinese don't find them useful any more or the whole Chinese system crashes.

So basically not all arrivals are tourists. So to use these as statistics for tourism is rather misleading.

One of the key fundamental problems of nationalistic countries is that often the population can be duped into thinking wealth of/for "the country" is the same as wealth for them/the average person. By the time they have woken up it is too late.

The bigger operators with numbers and clout will be allowed to "block book" . As said above, often they don't get the numbers they had anticipated.

In the near future (maybe already) TAT will be driving numbers for its mostly out of country investors. You already have the situation where booking sites take 15 % or more before the tourist hits ground. That is a big percentage that never reaches the domestic economy. On top of that you have the Chinese investors and top level Thais that will keep most of the tourist dollar out of the local economy. Everything in the tourist sector at the moment points to the local economy being screwed. To assume that more tourists will lead to "the Thais" being wealthier is a completely misled opinion.

Not really that simple, Chinese tourists will be following Chinese investment, so as to fill Chinese pockets. I live in the main tourist area of Chiang Mai and every new investment is either Chinese building on land leased for 30 years or Chinese / Thai consortiums buying and building. Looking at the amount of money that is flowing in , I would doubt that Chiang mai will be left off the Chinese itineraries anytime in the near future.

So each person has to log in with ID? Otherwise how can you detect which log file goes back to which customer. Or are they going to rely on the device details linking the person to the IPs.
Might be possible for phones but more tricky for laptops etc.
