jcmj replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Hey with a bit of work, I could make that room live able for me. I just wonder what the rest of the house looks like. -
Zuckerberg: Ten million join Meta's Twitter rival, Threads
jcmj replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I think the worst part is that many will download the app and if they are not happy and try to cancel their account they will lose their instagram account as well. Now that’s a little tricky and sneaky way to keep subscribers. -
Pattaya Youngsters Beat 18-Year-Old Man for Asking Them to Quiet Down
jcmj replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
They really need to punish these kids who cause fights with more serious charges. If anyone is found they usually just give them a slap on the hand, a small fine and a Wai. Nothing will change until they start putting these dangerous kids in jail. However, they must find them first, and most other Thais don’t want to get involved due to possible backlash. Get those cameras working and start cleaning up the area. -
Northeast Thailand villages ravaged by wild elephants: Urgent action plea
jcmj replied to snoop1130's topic in Isaan News
I wonder what they expected would happen when they moved into the elephants territory and started growing crops? They never seem to think about the consequences. I feel bad that they lost their crops, but not as bad as I feel for the elephants losing their land. -
I guess they are counting Thai travelers. There is no way in hell that they will get that many international tourists. I guess they do count transit tourists in their numbers, but still they need to get a grip and give semi realistic numbers that we could actually see happening. China is not coming back in droves, Russians already came to get away from a possible draft, and the post Covid travelers that were stuck out of Thailand till they opened their borders are back. Dream on TAT. Dream on.

Tesla delivers record number of cars after price cuts
jcmj replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Well duh ???? if you drop the price, obviously you will have a better chance of selling it. Maybe he got the idea from Any business that has had a sale on their products and see their sales increase. Maybe he can print out some coupons as well ???????? -
Legacy admissions: Harvard accused of favouring mostly white students
jcmj replied to Social Media's topic in World News
If you have really good test scores and can afford it then you should be able to be accepted. I don’t believe in letting people in of any race if they don’t meet the standard requirements. There shouldn’t be different scores for different races. That’s just not fair. I had a good enough score to enter if I wasn’t white, but I certainly didn’t have the money, in any case. So I simply chose another school. It’s not rocket science. Now I don’t hire people because of their race. I hire them for their skills and job history. Their college diploma makes no difference to me. -
I was in the real estate business for many years and always marketed to the LBGQ community as well. DINK. Double income, no kids. They could, and usually would spend more on their homes and holidays. It’s a no brainer. I imagine if they did pass a marriage law here, there would be a lot more over the top weddings and parties. Business is business. Why not capitalize on it now before other Asian countries do. It doesn’t harm anyone. Live and let live.

Thai elephant Sak Surin safely repatriated after 22 years in Sri Lanka
jcmj replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
I’m glad they got him home unharmed. I’m just confused about his health being in good form, considering the reason they brought him home was due to health issues. In any case, I hope he lives a long stress free life at the sanctuary. -
The police should be required to turn in their gun when their shift ends, and sign it out when starting their shift. I know that they may have another gun, but this could help save more lives from drunk policemen. There have been way too many shootings like this happening lately. Do I expect them to do this? No, but they need to do something.

Get past school uniforms, reframe the purpose of education
jcmj replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It seems that most teachers use the don’t ask, don’t tell theory. I used to get upset when my son came home with homework, but didn’t know how to do it. I asked him why he didn’t ask his teacher to explain it? He would just tell me that he couldn’t. I was very confused and upset about this and went to the school to ask the teacher. She just said he can ask a friend if he doesn’t know, because she was very busy getting ready for the next class. ??? Then my son got upset saying that she will be hard on him because I spoke to her, and she was. Another thing I learned, the hard way, is not to correct the teacher’s mistakes on their English homework assignments. Heaven forbid the teacher loses face for incorrectly correcting his homework. I’d cross out her x’s and rewrite the correct spelling, or phrase, so my son knew which was correct. I did look up the answers, just in case I was wrong, before correcting her mistake. Wowza. I was called into the school to discuss “proper behavior of a parent “. Well they got an earful from me and after listening to their BS. I then went to look at a few other schools, and speak to the principal and teachers about my situation and concerns, and promptly took my son out of that school and transferred him to a new one. I felt bad for my son, but I am spending good money on his education. I didn’t want him feel that he has to accept ignorance, judgment and harassment for asking questions, or questioning the “correct answers”. Q&A is one of the best ways to learn new things and improve your knowledge and skills. -
Thanks JB but I’m single now. I guess I’ll have him look into it and see what we can do. He’s been asking for years, but I knew I couldn’t do it when he was under 18 and I was single. Now he has brought it up again. We shall see. He is and will always be my son, with the last name or not.

My foster son, who is Thai, just turned 21 and wants to have my last name and adopt me. I am single now, but wondering if this can be done or just explain to him that it I would love it, but it’s just not possible?

I’m afraid that if the dinosaurs change the results of the election through any means they can, people will go to the streets and it will get messy. Then the military will come in and take control and another coup will happen. I hope it doesn’t go this far, but we all know Thai history and what happens in these situations.

US Supreme Court strikes down student loan forgiveness plan
jcmj replied to Social Media's topic in World News
If you take any loan, you must pay it back. I worked my ass of to get mine paid. I never expected anyone to pay for my education. It was my choice to go and it was very clear how much it cost. I worked 2 jobs throughout my college years to start knocking them down. Then slowly paid them back for another 10 years. Sure, I had to sacrifice some vacations and the latest and greatest phones or cars etc. if they forgave all those loans or gave them a $10,000 reduction, where do you think they would get the money from? We would be paying for it one way or another. the only thing I would agree with is reducing the interest rate on student loans. -
Why don’t they do it like most other countries and do it prepaid. Most everything else here is prepaid. Why not this. In order to get a pass you need to put X amount on the pass, and then receive a notification when it is below a certain amount. If they don’t top it up and go through tolls, then they will get a fine. You’d think that they would have a picture taken every time the light was red showing they didn’t pay, but that would require more work, and we all know that’s not an easy task to accomplish. It sure would cut down the traffic a lot if they promoted this and let people know that they will pay less by having a pass, and made it idiot proof.

I went on a cruise from Laem Chabang years ago when Star Cruise was operating from there. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had. Used as a port to leave was fine, but I couldn’t imagine coming there as a stop to visit Pattaya or Bangkok. It’s just too far away from anything and looks pretty bad. Certainly not what people would expect if they were to visit Thailand.

Pita Confident More Senators Are Now Backing Him For PM
jcmj replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I would never condone harassing the children of the Senators, but shaming the Senators and their wives for what they’ve done wouldn’t bother me and might make them change their stance. -

If you can’t afford to pay a lawyer 6,000 baht to do a proper Will for you, and you have property or a personal savings account, it will be in probate for at least 6 months and up to 2 years. This is from personal experience with a friend who passed away. The executor was no longer living in Thailand so we had to track him down and he signed that over to my friend. He had an old Will and had just written his new Will to be done by a lawyer, but passed away before he got it completed. They would only recognize his old Will, done some 15 years ago. His ex was in the old Will along with other friends that were long gone from his life. He also bought a couple condos and a car since, and he clearly stated in his new handwritten Will who gets what. Didn’t matter. The ex, and old friends got it all. It was a 2 year nightmare, and the lawyers fees to get everything sorted were insane. So do the Will as you wish, if you’re not concerned about the hell it could cause. Also more importantly, make sure you have it updated and given to your trusted friends and family. Otherwise the New handwritten Will may disappear if your family or ex has the original one, and may not be so happy with the new one. Just my opinion.

My insurance here, which originally was BUPA Thailand and has been acquired by several companies and now is Allianz Ayudhya cannot cancel my policy. I’m not sure what age you have to have started it, for this clause, but well worth looking into. I only have IPD and they have always paid the bill, minus a few sleeping tablets or something that is not really required. I may have to pay 800 baht or when I have been in longer with a more serious condition it may be as much as 8,000 baht that they deny. I have also always been reimbursed for any appointments or required medication for the 30 days after release. You just need to read the policy and ask the important questions. I only have high blood pressure as a pre existing condition. Any that happen after I had my policy are never added to the list when I pay for the next year. They can increase it max 10%. You’re still young enough to get a good plan that will cover you if you don’t have a lot of pre existing conditions. I wouldn’t risk it. International plans are always much more expensive and most do not cover the US. The devil is in the details so just cross your t’s and dot your i’s. Good luck.
-
I use Thai Aetna, which has now changed to Allianz Ayudhya and have the IPD only. I have unfortunately had several claims over the years, but it is still only 72,000 baht per year. 5 million baht coverage per ailment and have been extremely happy with them. I’m a couple years younger but I’d still look into their plans. They can only go up 10% max per year if you have claims, but if you don’t have any claims for the year they will discount it by 10%. I never get the OPD as it is pretty much baht for baht. Plus if you go to the emergency room they cover up to 20,000 baht if not admitted. Also a note that if you get the international plan it is much more expensive. So, if it is just for you while living in Thailand, don’t waste your money on an international plan. You can always get travel insurance if needed. Good luck.
