  1. I don't know about Marine Corps crowd/riot control training but I have recieved over 24 hours of this type of training. I worked the 2000 Democratic National Convention which was held ironically in downtown LA. It got rather "spirited" and and a handful of "peaceful" protestors threw lit cigarettes at our horses. This could have been tragic. Based upon my experience I did not feel the 24 hours of trainig was actually enough. Most of the time it was like organized chaos and keeping accountability of every officer in the squad was difficult. Also, wearing all the gear for hours was difficult. Obviously the mentality of people is much different now. Back in 2000 few people actually challenged or resisted. Even with that arresting just one person took at times 6 to 8 people (4 to 6 to provide a safey circle while the rest actually took control of the suspect and applied the zip ties). I doubt any combat Marine will be proficient in crowd/riot and I doubt very much an agressive Marine will be very proficient in "de-escalatiing) because us cops were not and still are not good at that during this type of event.
  2. A little different reception in Santa Ana than in LA. I guess people in Oranage County have class and dignity:
  3. I believe their only mission will be to guard and protect Federal facilities and workers. At this point I do not believe they can actually "hit the streets"?
  4. This is a member of Congressman speaking to members of the CA National Guard who were ordered to be in LA. Yes it is the legendary Maxine Walters and a Democrat. Good job Aunt Maxine:
  5. The greatest statement I ever heard was when I arrested a looter in 92 and he said "it's free, right?".
  6. That was in the past. The extreme left has penetrated every city in LA county. The residents held a protest in front of hotel Pasadena where out of town ICE agents were stayiing. The proudly declared "not in my city". The only real hope is still in Orange County. Even my hometown of Torrance where conservative values were present has now shifted left.
  7. Actually it is not that far from downtown LA. All they have to do is just go south on Figueroa and they would find plenty of chances to express their Free Speech rights to an audience that could care less.
  8. It looks like this is going the way Trump and his people said it would: 1. Mexican and Palestine flags displayed 2. CHP-California Highway Patrol vehicles burned on the 101 Freeway. What does the CHP have to do with ICE? The CHP was clearing the busiest freeway that goes through downtwon LA-the 101. 3. Just like in the past a high end shoe store has been looted. 4. The LAPD has declared a Tactical Alert and this means no days off and all officers work 12 hour shifts. Also, 50% of police personnel is devoted to the civil unrest and the remaining answer calls for service. This means evern longer response times than normal. Normal LAPD response times have never been good to begin with. 5. By now the LA County Law Enforcement Mutual Aid plan should have been activated and officers from the county should be available to assist. Once all available officers have responded and the rioting and civil disturbance have not been dealt with then NG should be called. Today the NG was called before this mutual aid was activated but too bad we are there now so Mayor Bass and Gov Gavin should accept it and deal with the riots. 6. The esteemed Gov Gavin needs to stop with "Trump's mess" that we are left to deal with. This was a mess long before anything Trump did or did not do.
  9. The foreign flag argument at a protest or rally is weak. For decades I have seen the Mexican flag displayed when Lakers won a champiosnhips and riots started. What about the Palestinian flag during the "free Palestine" protests when a major freeway was blocked in LA?
  10. LAPD hired two in the DACA program and allegedly the two graduated from the academy. One minor problem is that the two cannot purchase a firearm because they are not legal. This means they can carry a department issued firearm while on duty but cannot own a personal firearm. This is how crazy LAPD "leadership" and the clowns who run LA are acting.
  11. The I-5 in SD and the OC are mostly clear but once any vehicle gets into LA county traffic usually comes to a crawl. Doubt an actual Marine convoy of MRAP's will actually be seen in downtown LA. Marines are warfighters and have little training in civil disturbance response. Active Duty military deployment to US cities should be an absoulute last resort. I mean all civilian law enforcement resources have to exhausted and all NG resources have to exhausted and then active duty Army soldiers or Marines can be deployed to resture order. CA has a statewide law enforcement mutual aid system and this mean civilian LE throughout the state can be called in to assist in LA. This has not occurred. At least not yet.
  12. Those are not LAPD officers. They are cadets who do simple tasks like making copies and errans. Many do not get hired as actual officers. Yes they are many LAPD officers and LASD deputies who are of Latino descent but there numbers are not over 50%. At least not yet. Chances are females LAPD officers might hit 50% sooner than later. Yes that is one fo the DEI goals of the LAPD.
  13. Hopefully by the time the NG can actually mobilize, draw equipment, receive op orders and deploy it will be Tuesday and things will calm down. I would not want to see Marines from Pendelton patrollig the streets of LA. This would come with risks. Internal civil disturbances are the responsibility of cilviliain law enforcement and if they are overwhelmed then the NG can play only a supporting role. The absolute last esort is active duty military. If this happens then it's time to lock your doors and lock and load whatever firearm you can get a hold ot. The current situation is no way near that.
  14. I think Sec Def needs to look up Posse Comitatus Act first. However when I was working the 1992 riots rumore were rampant that the Army would be deployed to assist because the CA Army National Guard at that was useless. The Army was never deployed. Most of us in LE worked 15+ days straight on 12 hour shifts.
  15. The weird thing is the State, Cities and the county of LA will probably ask for Federal money to pay for police overtime and other costs. I have seen this happen many times before. It goes like this : We the local government do not like it when immigration laws are actually enforced but if the Federal government is handing out money our arms are wide open.
  16. No. Federal activation has occurred in the past. Even if the governor activates the NG Federal governemt can wrestle control away. Even Gov Gavin tweeted as much and said "no need" but he knew he could not stop it.
  17. National Guard will be deployed to LA. "Border Czzr" Holmans just said this but of course POTUS has to actually sign the order. This might complicate things. Last time the NG was deployed in LA was 1992 for this type of activity. Of course a small number was activated for traffic control during the Palisades fire.
  18. This is what I fear the most: Who will buy more US Debt? The last thing I want to hear is "raise the debt ceiling". The cracks may be forming even right now. The inventory of unsold homes in many parts of the US is growing by the day. Interest rates across the board are starting to iinch higher and higher and this is literally brake that halts any economy. The US economy runs on borrowed money (auto loans, home loans, credit cards and even personl loans). When money is cheap the economy humms and when money is expenisve the economy crawls.
  19. Really can't make it much worse. 1) 36 Trillion in debt 2) Close to 900 billion in interest payments on the debt 3) Spend more than it takes in 4) Debt to GDP ratio 120% 4) The only other developed economy that has a worse GDP to Debt ratio is japan at over 200%. These numbers only apply to the US Federal Government. Some American states and large cities are even in worse fiscal condition. CA has a 40+ Billion budget defict and the second larges city, LA, has a 900 million budget deficit and it's esteemed Karen Bass announced the possiblity of layoffs and a hiring freeze with the exception of police. I could go on and on but USS Titanic is coming closer to it's iceberg.
  20. Marathon 5 times (26.2 Miles or 42 KM) when I was in my 30's . Never again. Best time was 4 hours.
