  1. I would probably do exactly the same as this guy. I take a domestic flight every week, many people take oversized and overweight luggage on the plane. I agree the airlines should check each handcarry lugage but they don't. Picking out one guy is just shameful and for sure an insult to that man.

Great; then I would expect, and not be disappointed, to see your misbehavior handled in the same fashion. Do that enough, and it'll stop happening. THAT's the desired outcome with respect to self-interested, spoiled people who've talked themselves into believing they don't need to play by the rules or be considerate of those that do..

try to see it in it's context and maybe you will understand. A nervous passenger picked out for overweight handluggage in view of all the other passengers. The crew should have known that making a fuss of this might create overreaction from the passenger. Air crew should be trained to avoid conflicts on a plane and certainly not ignite them. Thats why luggage overweight should be checked by the airline prior to boarding. Looking at the tone of your reaction, you could be a potential risk to much more than an airline.

Don't be silly. He was "picked out" for no reason other than having an overweight bag. Had he cooperated and simply let them stow his bag where it belonged, there'd have been no problem. You sympathize with someone who selfishly breaks a well-publicized rule and then provokes an incident on a crowded airplane over it, whereas I sympathize with the flight attendants just trying to do their jobs, and *I'm* the potential risk. thumbsup.gif

I respect your opinion and shouldn't have made a nasty remark for which I appologize. Nevertheless I am convinced the airline in question could have avoided this clash. Btw I don't drink alcohol..

Yes, the airline could have avoided the clash - you're correct - by letting the passenger break the rule, thus inconveniencing other passengers who don't, and encouraging the same unacceptable behavior in others. What you're missing is that the passenger could ALSO have avoided the clash - by simply complying with the rule in the first place, as most others do, OR by manning up to having been caught, letting the attendant take his bag and stow it (in the appropriate place), and NOT throwing a juvenile tantrum. The right decision was made. The customer is NOT always right; this one certainly was not. He should be placed on a no-fly list for some period of time (not for deciding to ignore the carry-on limits, but for the disruptive behavior).

If you think such rules are somehow unfair or that you should be an exception to them, find another way to travel or write your congressman... Disrupt a cabin crew and you belong OFF the airplane.

you are missing my point, i do agree with the handcarry lugage limitations, but they should check them BEFORE boarding NOT in the plane. So this whole clash could have been easily avoided if the airlines would have followed their own rules which are very important for the safety of all passengers. In the plane it is the responsibility of the crew to keep the situation as less stressful as possible. If I were the direct boss I would have fired the crew member in question.

  3. The only time SCB charges me anything (well, other than the annual bank letter and when I need a new ATM card) is when I handle the transaction outside of my home province. Within the home province (Chiangmai), they've never charged me for deposits, withdrawals, or using the ATM card. I recently deposited a check from another Thai bank and there was no charge for doing that.

Like mania, I haven't had any problems. And I currently have my 800k for the retirement account in a 14-month account at 2.8% (more than double what you'd get in the west).

do you pay a charge if you withdraw from your account (SCB) and transfer this amount to another SCB account? If not, I don't understand why they charge me. Same with deposit of bank cheque, I can tell you with 100% certainty I paid 7000 THB fee on a SCB cheque coming from Pataya and deposited on my SCB account in BKK.

  5. All joking aside, this is a major safety issue.

What do you think the original 10kg max cabin baggage rule was for?

Forget about what airline & what class of travel, as I have experienced in a modern jetliner massive turbulence where not only

3 cabin crew bounced off the ceiling (2 concussed) but overhead baggage flying around the cabin & I don't want your 20+ kilos

    landing on my head ,thankyou.

Also, most people would have no idea of the G forces involved with all that weight overhead say in the event of an aborted takeoff.

    Oversize, overweight, CHECK IT IN

i totally agree with you, but picking out one guy is not correct. If they wanted to charge him 900thb overweight ( which i agree on) they should have done it with all carry on lugage. And indeed heavy lugage is very unsafe and gives you an idea how some airlines neglect standard aviation rules.

  6. It is really terrible, even when you withdraw your own money from saving account inside the bank you have to pay.worse, I sold my condo in Pataya last year and got a bank check from SCB went to deposit to my account in Bangkok ( also SCB) had to pay 7000 THB!! Why because check was from other city and charge is based on % which is in my opinion close to criminal.

  7. Yep same here, purchased Lenovo computer in Paragon . After 2 weeks fatal crash. Asked for new one but ooh no cannot ... Only possible within 5 days after purchase. Got it back after 2 months (they replaced touchscreen with standard one). After another month I got it finally back but of course meanwhile I bought another new one. Indeed after service is a problem but honestly I don't know if the after service is better elsewhere...

  8. Its illogical to think that there are no good tradesmen here, just look at how good some of the big shopping malls are done. Tiles are done good ect, there are good tradesmen around. The big problem is finding them most of what you normally find are people who just "pretend" to be a tradesman and quality can vary then a lot.

But they are there.. but hard to find. I have read posts on people who have found them but these guys are always busy of course and a bit more expensive.

Though more money wont always buy better quality (found that out)

i completely agree, there are very professional people around but you will not find them in Homepro are alike. I have a business here and employ over 50 people, most are trained by me. In general they are no multi- taskers and lack initiative, but once they understand the job they can be very good, better than many Europeans. The problem is education; poor basics and not enough practical training like plumber, electricians etc... They just learn it from the elder, so very few input of new technologies. It is mainly thanks to foreign companies quality and skills improve.

  9. I am occasionally reacting to posts and threads, sometimes the topic is really interesting and sometimes i follow a silly post which was intended to be silly and in such case I really like some of the comments from members with real writer skills who can make me smile and enjoy their quality writing. When the bashing starts I leave the topic, simple as that. Just respect other opinions even if they completely contradict yours. The world has many colors! Oops I hope nobody will accuse me now of being a racist :)

  10. Hey Giddyup, i know exactly how you feel, i stopped smoking 5 years ago and didn't drink one drop of alcohol the past 2 years. Since I stopped drinking, i tried the bars a couple of times but sitting sober next to the partying crazy friends is no fun. I have the same problem as mentioned by some other replies, I was born with a on/off switch,( no dimmer available at that time). Why I do it? To take care of my health (had tripple heart bypass surgery) I do like being in control of things, before when I went partying, I couldn't stop drinking until wasted. Now you have your life in control, You could focus on bringing your body back into shape, fitness, sport whatever. This will give you a lot of satisfaction. My mind is also more clear and memory improved. I do miss the sinful times once and a while, but I promised myself, if ever my doctor tells me I have little time left, I will go to the nearest 7/11 buy a bottle of vodka and a pack of cigarettes. I will enjoy the view on Pataya beach and repeat this every day until my last. Only this thought can keep me away from relapse.

  11. It's easy to make jokes about the Thai police, and it's easy to make fun of how to stop the corruption. The bottom line is though that if the "established" procedure of bribing the police is reduced/eliminated, the traffic situation would improve. Let's see how this works and stop complaining about every attempt to sort out the present "mess".

we/I are not complaining about the present mess, we are discussing the new 10.000 thb bribe reward. I have no complaints about the way things were, in my opinion plain and simple. Police were always friendly to me and I always paid the 100/200thb without problem. I consider this "tea money" to boost their salary. Hell, I pay at least this as a tip in any restaurant!

  12. Great, first they establish the procedure, which is, you ask how much do you want? And now they are encouraged to entrap you for it.

So how will we go about paying when they stop you at a checkpoint? I need a new script.

I think the smartest is to keep quite and let the police do all the talking and see if he wants a fine with an official receipt or a bribe and try to record it with either your mobile phone or if you got a car cam you can turn to the policeman's direction.

Are traffic police officers allowed to collect fines on the spot?
sometimes they have a booth at the road side and give you official receipt. I experienced this on my way from BKK to Phitchit.

  13. So when do they stop the practice to take your driving license? I have no problem paying a fine. But i need my license as driving without is illegal!

This country is getting worser every day.

are you living in Thailand? When police fines you officially, they will confiscate your drivers license. You get it back when the fine is paid. Meanwhile you can continue to drive without license, based on a paper they give you. Nice thing is that police will not fine you a second time during that day:)
