  1. I understand Irish humour - I thought with Scottish humour they were so tight they wouldn't share the punchline ????
  2. We're back this week too. I think I read the same thread - seemed to be much quieter & some places closed down(not that it was ever busy, busy) I was thinking of popping down for a 4-5 days - luckily one of our condos is in Rama2 so we can get off early. That road is a nightmare from BKK - esp' now due to roadworks ( My wife went back in March and the traffic was awful) If it's quiet, there maybe some good deals at the high-end hotels etc. The ones we've looked at in BKK/Samed/Pattaya are pretty normal prices for time of year. We're just looking for a few decent bars/restaurants and nice beach area ( and me access to watch the world-cup ) in a decent hotel ????
  3. Speculation - some to his girlfriend - Founder Sam Bankman-Fried denies secretly transferring $10BN to trading company run by his girlfriend. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11419415/At-1-billion-client-funds-missing-failed-crypto-firm-FTX-sources.html ( Not that I'd trust anything the Daily Mail reported on )
  4. Mine in London with Virgin is 300+ every day - it doesn't drop. I check often. I do reboot the router once a week at the weekend when I pop to the shops. My old BT one did drop.
  5. I think a built in one looks better - if it's stainless steel, and makes the counters look cleaner and less cluttered. One on the cabinets is more convenient, easier to change, refresh - but not as aesthetically pleasing.
  6. Re bargaining - Thais would always go in much lower so that is what I'd do. If it's up for 10, I'd start at 8 to 8.5. Someone offered me 17 for one of mine a couple of weeks ago, but I think it's worth 19 so I said, no. Tenants in there already. My advice would be to rent though if you're in Bangkok/larger Town at the moment. Make sure you know the cost of the community fees and if they'e any extraordinary fees at present e.g. for new lifts/painting etc Make sure you search condo name to get baseline figures for that condo/size/beds - unless it's small you'll see others for sale & go look at them e.g. hipflat, ddproperty. Measure twice - cut once !
  7. I got that the same time as my yellow book - took an additional 10 mins ( for the photo and print it )
  8. I remember hiring a manual car which had one of these at Heathrow. I drove to my parents whose house is on a hill and parked up - snowing outside. Came out and I'd been blocked in - a few inches wither side. Using it whilst trying to revers up a hill using clutch control with only a few inches either side was terrifying, thinking of the damage I may do if it didn't work as expected ????
  9. I did a lot more than that(that's not a great deal of money), you can use a currency exchange e.g. TorFX/Cambridge(I've used both) etc in the UK stating it's for living expenses etc. They're all coming from your personal bank accounts. I'd just open an account with anyone like the above, transfer your money to them and then to your/wive's Thai account. Just split it into 2 or 3 bundles, the rate won't differ much over a few days - it'll make you feel more comfortable checking when it arrives. Try a smaller amount first-time to ensure the process from the provider to the Thai bank is fine(account no's etc correct). The consultant will tell you the best method. Same process 1000's of people use to buy properties in Spain etc,
  10. I have a pic' of me and John Paul II together in Rome when I was 14 No I don't believe in God - I was brought up a catholic with an Irish Father and catholic schooling My father believed in God much more after he had a heart attack and then a stroke. I do believe in treating people like you'd like to be treated - more of that and less religion would go a long way
  11. BTW - how long are you staying. If you're just a tourist I wouldn't worry about it if you don't need it for any type of visa renewal. Stay in a hotel for one night and they're responsible for doing it.
  12. So what is the new rate - we'll be doing our Xmas/New Year visit to Samed as per usual ( missed it the last 2 years ) as been back in the UK. Used to make it about 5+ times a year from Bangkok. I also heard our usual speed boat to Samed Villa is no longer possible and we have to go to the main Samed pier. 20+ years and now they change it. We'd always get a speed boat at 8 and it would usually beat the officers to the beach, so no entry fee ????
  13. No problem - I've transferred from UK/Swiss/IOM/Jersey accounts to my wife's account with no issues for large purchases etc
  14. Internet - I just give them login and password. In general post Covid we've been based in the UK so we're not popping in to do TM30's for anybody.
  15. I provide my tenants the details required to do the TM30's themselves - I have no intention of keeping track of their comings and goings.. I keep a record of the email showing they have the details,
  16. Never seen any banking docs that say "particularly for residents of Thailand" in over 30+ years of working in banking. ????
  17. Only girls play rounders....... How you can say it's one of the world's "greatest sports, particularly on TV" I don't understand. Never seen it on UK TV. I think Tom Hanks starred in a movie about it once. A damn sight more play cricket - what is with Americans that they think everything revolves around them.. Enjoy the Football WORLD cup - played by most nations. ????
  18. My sister had skin cancer from using sun beds from her teenage years. She also likes her multiple hot hols, but the doc' said probably from sunbed usage. Totally advise against them after seeing her injuries. She recently had surgery and the state of her back and arms after all the stitches was amazing - I was totally shocked. Looked like a couple of Rottweilers had used her for a long lunch.
  19. If it's not sunburn it could be seborrheic dermatitis " Seborrheic (seb-o-REE-ik) dermatitis is a common skin condition that mainly affects your scalp. It causes scaly patches, inflamed skin and stubborn dandruff. It usually affects oily areas of the body, such as the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest" You can get Dermovate from a Chemist(cost < 300 baht) e.g. Boots without prescription - I believe it requires a prescription in the UK
  20. I'm fortunate enough to be married to a Doctor so I usually ask her for medical advice. But yes, both excellent contributors.
  21. Without Ubon Joe - close it down.......
  22. I got mine today in London - the P.O. server said 1949 and showed me their official document, I showed them their own P.O. updated website page. Much to the guy's annoyance he gave me the 68' version.
  23. If you've already got an IDP recently what is it, 1949 or 1968 and when did you get it? The Uk GOV website says 1968, but the post office did say 1949 until a few weeks ago. I wrote an email to the post office saying they're form was wrong - I added a comment in a thread on here a few weeks ago detailing the discrepancy. Now the Post Office has updated their website - no thanks from the P.O. for me correcting them ???? Not even a free 5.50 IDP. ???? https://www.postoffice.co.uk/identity/international-driving-permit#IDP-Checker To drive in Thailand you will need an International Driving Permit 1968 Permit valid for 3 year
  24. That was my understanding. We'll complete it anyway as we'll be in BKK if we go ahead. Appreciate the feedback from everyone. Regards P
