True that. And I would say almost to the man, it had to do with allowing the woman to push the timetable, and not pushing back. If he had just taken his time, he might still be in possession of his life savings. He would have found out at some point what she was all about. Most women here push the guy to step up too soon. And some guys just are not educated to push back.

regardless of thailand or not, we all play the dating game (or whatever you may call it),

and for most losing $100 here or there sux but its not the end of the world,

however if it was $100k, thats life changing, so hopefully I wont end up in a similar situation,

I am embarassed to myself that every girl ive dated (in my own country) i end up lending money too in drips and drabs,

for some reason they all seem to be about $2000, its obviously in my helping nature,

but ive recently attempted to stop and have not lent anyone any money, (and its not as if Im rich either)

embarassed to say that its taken me this long to fix myself

Who are these people? Who gives real money to someone they met online? Sorry to say, but she deserves this fate. Let this be a lesson to her.

When it come to either online dating, or real dating, take your time getting to know the individual Do not enter into an online romance. You have no idea who you are dealing with. Use the internet to make a connection, and then meet. This person may be a big baby, who only looks like a real person, but in reality is a 13 year old. There are an awful lot of emotionally undeveloped people here in LOS, and around the world. People who find it very hard to truly communicate, deal with issues, talk about problems, and work them out. Also, if they are a con artist, if they are only in it for the money, those realizations will manifest themselves over time. It is easy for the con artists, to take advantage of emotionally wounded men, and women, who seem to be willing to do anything to regain a semblance of normality in their lives, with a decent person. Time allows clarity. Never, ever move too quickly. That is the undoing of most guys here, who get into trouble with women. Be a real man. Man up. Do yourself proud. Do our gender proud. Same with women, I guess

I know there are some who will find this kind of talk offensive. How dare he say these things. Well, for those of us who refuse to lead complacent lives of weak PC madness, some of this stuff just needs to be said. I am about as politically incorrect as they come, and I love it!

and yet, how so many farangs who are educated, 20 yrs older, smart, get duped out of their life savings by someone who is "emotioanlly underdeveloped", didnt finish high school , not high iq

    speaks a million words

Don’t use them. They have no right to mark currency! Of course in Thailand “ laws “ have an interpretation which are loose ! They probably did it to check if you wanted to change back to Baht ! Problem is someone you are paying may well not accept those bills!

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

these comments reminded, approximately 20 years ago (not in thailand) i worked in a casino, and did foreign currency exchange, we accepted virtually every currency, but for the CNY (Chinese Yuan) we were told by the managers , if it had any marks on it, pen or pencil, to reject it,

    Never knew why, still dont,

so customers would bring piles and piles of notes, of 100 CNY, and we would spend minutes each transaction filtering out the ones with marks on them, most customers had unmarked notes, but the odd customer had 90% with a few marks on them.

they were pretty annoyed, which is fair enough

The fact that the bar accepted the reduced amount doesnt prove anything , the bar may have accepted cost price or the Police may had strongly suggested that the bar resolves the issue by accepting the amount .

YOUR first sentence doesn't make sense , but if you was asking wheteher it costs 1000 Baht to ring the bell , no it doesnt

in my country, if at a bar, some drunk customer says . "I want a dom perignon, dom perignon please, I would like a dom perignon delivered to my table"

thats not an automated permission to deliver 3 bottles of dom perignon,

because,  chances are the person isnt going to pay, is going to make a fuss, and isnt worht it for the staff to extort 3 bottles out of him

common sense prevails in my country

Granted - but let's not equate the mega rich with average folk. Credit cards are definitely useful - if someone doesn't spend beyond what they earn. And many do. Seven credit cards ??? a recipe for looming disaster. I know a fellow that has many credit cards - he shuffles money from one card to another to service his monthly repayments on each. He is lost to debt. I feel the banks and governments are softening us up to be reliant to the use of plastic. They are control tools and a method of spying on us. Question: how are you going to have a secret bonk by using plastic ?? get the message. You won't even be able to wipe your bottom without someone knowing.

I wont get into the details, but I have 7. as I signed up for those bonuses, 5 of those are unused (which probably means I should cancel them), I am one of those fortunate people that has only paid interest on credit cards a few times when my micro business failed,

life throws curveballs at you, and we all go through rough patches,

but I have no sympathy those that are always up to their eyeballs in debt through lifestyle choices

business debt is a different thing

  6. For those that insist on all debt is bad and they live or aim to live without any form of credit cards or loans or home loans ever

credit cards CAN be a useful tool, you can even make money off it by taking advantage of interest free periods, but its not for everyone, I currently have 7 credit cards

also not all debt is bad, there is  good debt and bad debt, google it

the rich people in this world, the bransons, the gates, the trumps for example have gazillions in debt, without it, they probably wouldnt be in their current positions

Here is an example of the mentality here.

I had just come back home from an especially lucrative contract and felt generous.

I gave my wife's parents 250k to buy a good second-hand truck that they could use to maybe help them make money.

I found out that they put this money as a down-payment on a brand new Toyota Hi-Lux. They swanned around the village with big face for five months until the truck was re-possessed and they ended up with nothing.

They were told in no uncertain terms that I wasn't happy and they could never expect such largess from me ever again.

i respect your generosity and good heart but youve just soldified the definition of a "walking ATM"

btw: what do they say when someone asks "what happened to the car?"

isnt that the definition of losing face?

Growing up I remember having 2 TV one had sound and one had a picture

that being said, I remember I bought a tv that was $1500 and it was one of the cheaper ones

and thats in years ago dollars

now you can buy a new 50-60inch tv for $500 and thats in todays dollars,

so tvs for example and virtually every other household appliance has tumbled down in price, so often is much more efficient to replace instead of repair

I too have a 10 yo Nokia , when it rang one day in Pai a couple of years ago , it caused much amusement from visiting young back packers.  Hey ! it tells me who is phoning , I can make calls with it , it contains lists of numbers I use , let folk find it fun , it does all I want . Of cousre if I subscibed to Sit on my facebook it might let me down.

I would love to use my 10 yr old nokia , however, the newer ones do make life much better

eg using google maps, working messanging app, being able to use the internet while on the move

you dont need high end phones to use these apps but the entry level smart phones dont work very good in my opinion,

eg I purhcased a new nokia smart phone entry level, and the "Accept button" on google maps would come up behind the phone back button, so  I simply put it in the cupboard a week later

Thais regard loans, especially within the family, as gifts.

My wife's sister telephoned one day to say she was on the way to the garage to buy her new car. Only she was ThB 20k short and could my wife transfer it quickly to "lend her". Next she opened a new restaurant and wanted another 20k loan to buy stocks of ingredients etc.

After 12 months we asked about repayment via father-in-law. Sister said "oh, are they short of money now then need me to pay back". That attitude sums it up. No responsibility or accountability to pay back - you've more than me so I can take some; entitled mentality.

Since then she's had several issues with loan sharks and land deeds. Some of which were her parents and which she and her partner were not entitled to use as collateral.

This may be true , but the banks not going to accept their loan as a gift and write it off

    Or say

"Oh you will lose face if we chase you, no problems, dont worry about it!"

This is absolutely no Thai or West matter. It is global problem among youngsters

I have a s8+ love it to bits, hitting the 2 yr mark soon,

Hoping it last another 2 years.

Will cry if it drops dead tomorrow and I have to spend another 1k On  a new one.

Financial literacy has been falling over the years. It should be taught at school.

Ive heard this many times over the years, and  I agree

however, I simply cannot remotely understand what is so hard about,

you have a credit card, you spend $1000, you have to pay back $1000, plus interest of 20% per annum for example , and if you only pay back 20%, you still owe the original $1000

    or

you buy a $20k car, in a couple of years time its going be worth $10k, you lose $10k

There is not a "debt" problem in Thailand.  There is however an "unpaid" debt problem.  I am sure credit card debt is viewed the same way personal loan debt is, if I ignore it it will go away.

im still not convinced that many people think it will go away and never to rear its head again, but more a bury your head in the sand approach
