What is it with you people? Did China say "Right, at the start of February, we are going to spread a virus that will quickly become a "Global Pandemic"?

First of all 29, then 39, now "around 40"?
These people can't count up to 50, but they expect us to believe that by the end of the year Thailand will have seen more than 7 million visitors (or was it 39?)

From a previous post:-
"A month prior to his March outburst, in February 2020, Anutin was criticised for remarking that foreigners should be kicked out of Thailand when he saw some who were not wearing face masks at an event at the Siam BTS station in Bangkok.[17] Later, hearing advice from the US Surgeon General, Dr Jerome Adams, that the wearing of masks was unnecessary for the uninfected, Anutin changed his opinion"
So, as others on this Forum have noted, once you see the name "Anutin" making a statement, have a pinch of salt handy - or to be on the safe side, a full salt cellar!

Do you mean Thailand GDP or Global GDP? Never mind - pedantics!
Howsever, since Covid and the closing of borders and the banning of International flights, where I live, which is a tourist area, the expats are certainly doing their bit towards helping out the local economy. Due to the lack of tourists, many businesses would have gone under by now - and in fact many have, but the ones that survive do so mainly due to the patronage of expats, and the few tourists that are still here.
I have mentioned it before, but on average, one ex pat will put app 500,000 baht a year into the Thai economy. Now I know that expats numbers do not number millions (39 million+ tourists in 2019 according to TAT), but at the moment, while the powers that be i.e. the Gov't, TAT, etc are falling over themselves with one failed idea after about how to kick start the tourist economy, (which they have recently learned IS quite a sizeable chunk of Thailand's GDP - contrary to previous reports of single figures, and "not worth a lot in the bigger picture") the expats are out and about spending money in local businesses, helping the local economies, and not buying submarines or dishing out the contracts for building bridges!
I am not overestimating the ex pats' contribution to Thailand's GDP, but it would be nice to not have it's importance ignored or belittled - especially at the moment when sources of income are limited due to the impact of Covid-19.
And let's not forget that before Covid, the Government seemed to be going out of their way to make the visa process (for ex pat farangs in particular) as difficult as they could, literally forcing some to leave because of their inability to fulfil the requirements.
However, some of us are still here because of family, investments, property etc, and some of us are "Stranded" due to current legislation, but we are contributing to Thailand's economy, and that should be appreciated - not belittled:-

i totally agree.
people who left Thailand after 20th March only have themselves to blame and should stop moaning.
So what if someone died
So what if you needed to do something
All the stranded made their own choice, so deal with it.
How can anyone moan if they left after Thailand had closed.
Anyone here with the slightest amount of intelligence could see it would be impossible to return.
I feel sorry for the ones who left here prior to March 2020.
But even they would have known that the country was closing on March 20th 2020
So do I have sympathy for them? Yes, but just a bit.
"So what if someone died"
Think I'll put your name forward for " Humanitarian of the Year" award!

The conspiracy theorists are stirring again. These Covid-19 Myanmar truck drivers popped up late last week before these protests. Even if they were going to make things up to control the Bangkok situation, why on earth chose Tak when they could have the coronavirus slip in unnoticed via the international airport or any one of the ASQ's in the city?
I thought that no one was allowed into the country without going into 2 weeks quarantine - or is that just a rule for tourists, and truck drivers from Myanmar are exempt?

So apart from dispersing peaceful protestors by force, the Government has also denied the media the right to report on it?
Yet another reason why even the normally undemonstrative Thai people are getting angry and upset

I see your point about the "simple mistake", and call me pedantic if you want, but people should learn to check their posts before hitting the submit button.
Too many times a post becomes diificult to interpret, and sometimes - as in this case - the message becomes the opposite of what it should be.
Incidentally, I think that if one pleads guilty to the charge before you even go to jail/are sentenced, the sentence can be almost halved - not sure about changing your mind once you're inside! (I believe a "King's Pardon" can be given in some cases)

I think you've got me all wrong, and as for compassion, I have young children in Thailand, I can enter no problem but then I would not be able to return to my country of work, and would lose my job. hence I would not be able to continue the current financial support I consider to be essential, over and above a short break.
I'm not the one initially partitioning blame, I'm defending the fact that others are blaming others (Thailand) for their own current situation.
Your "evictions" paragraph, is totally irrelevant, if you refuse to pay the rent - you get evicted, maybe you should show some compassion for the landlord and his family.
Most of the world were aware in March that things could go wrong, I was in Thailand on the 13th, and headed back to work a week early, it was so obvious things had the potential to go wrong.
What part of a global pandemic do some people not understand.
I don't think I've got you wrong at all! Why do you think that having young children in Thailand makes you a compassionate person? And "I can enter no problem" shows that you are merely using them as an excuse - a reason why you should be allowed back in and others who don't have children shouldn't be!
If you read my "evictions" paragraph (as you call it) properly, you will see that the relevance is in the fact that the rent HAD been paid - up front for 10 (TEN!) years, and the landlord was in effect charging rent twice, so no, I am afraid I do not have any sympathy for the landlord and his family!!!
And I am afraid that yout last two sentences only show your arrogance, and not in the least compassionate:-
"it was so obvious things had the potential to go wrong. What part of a global pandemic do some people not understand."

17 hours ago, spoon1967 said:Why would you leave Thailand when it was clearly risky, in March this year it was obvious that things might go "pear shaped" with respect to international travel.
And how come they were evicted? was the rent/services not being paid? That's the only reason a landlord would evict, any this could of easily been avoided - unless it was done purposely.
But hey, blame everyone else.
Your post seems devoid of any form of compassion, but hey, the kind of person you are is up to you!
I don't think that any one thought in March that things would get as serious as they have, and if you have paid in advance for a 2 week holiday, in many cases if you cancel you lose your money - or a substantial part of it.
However, you can't really blame somebody's relatives for dying, or someone having to leave the country for a short spell for a myriad of reasons - financial, health care etc.
Regarding the evictions, I personally know of one situation (a few years ago, granted) where a friend of mine paid a 10 year lease up front on some property, but was only here for 6 months of the year. Turns out the landlord was sub letting the property out while he was out of the country - the same landlord who had a clause in the contract that said that any sub letting by my friend would be subject to him paying the landlord 25% of the rent received! So evicting someone in their absence is quite within the realms of possibility here!
More recently, just prior to the Coronavirus, I was told by Immigration that because I was on an "Under Consideration" stamp I could not leasve the country, and during that time a close relative died and I was unable to attend the funeral.
So don't go blaming people for making the wrong choices, when in many cases these choices have to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.

Every time this man opens his gob, I want to vomit!
Going back a few months:- "on 13 March 2020 that Anutin made a series of derogatory comments disparaging foreigners.[11][12] Anutin wrote on a Twitter account, "...all you see are farang ('Westerners'). They flee their own countries for the safety of Thailand. In Chiang Mai, 90% of Thais are wearing face masks, although none of the farang are wearing masks." He went on to add, "This is the reason our country is being infected [by the SARS-CoV-2 virus]. We should be more careful of the farang than other Asians. At the moment it is winter in Europe and farang come to Thailand to hide from the [Covid-19] disease. Many farang dress dirtily and don't shower. All [Thai] hosts have to be very careful."
Now he wants them back :- "We must use all our "charms" to get lots and lots of them to come". And ""The rest of the world has confidence in us and many foreigners want to visit." (Like the 120 Chinese who supposedly had the Special Tourist Visa? When in actual fact ZERO Chinese had even applied for it!!!)
And spouting this rhetoric while NOT wearing a mask while everybody round him IS! (Something else he has apparently changed his mind about!)
Does he honestly think people have such short memories? (No answer necessary!)
