This is what happens when people are appointed to a position solely because of their allegiance to a certain military faction rather than their qualifications and experience.
And also when people can buy their promotions!

I understand none of this, whose bloody well won? and won as in who is going to be IN CHARGE.

I know they do or used to mark the back of one's beer mat in a Dutch bar but not if you were a Brit! Or so my mate told me once.
How many bars in the west can you run a tab? Hotels with food yes but bars/pubs?
Correct! Running a tab is a recipe for disaster - once you've had a few it is quite an easy task for the "cashier" to add another couple of drinks on the tab, and then it's you word against the management. A mate of mine used to ask for the bottle tops!

It's been said before, but there should be "flyers" (Pun intended!) on all "planes, trains and buses" warning of the dangers of overpriced drinks in karaoke bars.
It seems to be becoming a national pastime (Chiang Mai, it would seem more than most) where if you disagree with the bill, prepare yourself for a good hiding.

I am still mystified sometimes by the rubbish that comes forth from these mouthpieces.
Last weekend there was a ban on selling alcohol because of the election, and what happened..........A man was arrested for defacing his ballot paper because he was out of his tree, and admitted to having been drinking since 5 pm on the Saturday........the whole time of the sales ban !!!!
"Sales ban" Did it not cross your mind that he bought the alcohol the day before? And there are lots of people I know that did exactly that, as they probably learned their lesson the previous weekend!

From this one gets a clear picture on the level of priority the government places on road safety.
Or more accurately the dilemma they face in causing a serious loss of booze sales revenue to the big beverage companies.
1. Minister fails to show up for the meeting on March 15th. (initial pressure applied)
2. There is no new schedule to consider the proposal. (pressure intensified)

BJ is just trying to eradicate all the expats who acquire their extensions illegally or through the back door. The problem is in doing so they are inadvertently going to tread on the toes of the expats who's applications are legal and above board.
Its naughty school kid syndrome. One kid misbehaves and doesn't own up so the whole class gets punished.
I suggest that you delete the word "just" from your post!
When he says that he is going to make things easier and the next week makes it doubly difficult (at least) in certain areas, you should beware of what he says when he uses the word "easier", and I am certainly not paranoid because the example I am quoting is not hearsay - it is FACT.
If he had any consideration for ex pats and elderly people who have lived here legally for years, he would have mentioned it already and made provision for them - but not a word!

Well I've been here for nearly 20 years, never any problems, an occasional hic-up with paperwork but always easily sorted out to everyone's satisfaction.
So what is under siege if you go with the flow. - - - start being a smart arse, try and pull a swifty you will rightfully have a problem.
Yes, but they're now moving the goalposts by FEET rather than INCHES (Or METRES rather than MILLIMETRES)!

Compulsive lying, I believe, is the term ????
The last time that he said that he was going to make things "easier" for ex pats he doubled the length of time that 800,000 baht had to be "seasoned" in the bank! (And it had to be a THAI Bank!)

Each persons personal situation shoud be taking into consideration, epecially for those who have families here. I think it;s extrmely unfair to put so much financial pressure on someone who has lived here for many years , that has never broken the law and who rasies their family well, only to be torn apart by some ridiculous financial requirements
Hear, hear!

"Channel 7 TV reported that the chief wanted to make things easier, faster and more watertight."
Easier, huh? Hmph! The last time that he said that he was going to make things "easier' for ex pats he doubled the length of time that 800,000 baht had to be "seasoned" in the bank (A THAI bank, by the way) from 3 months to 6 months, and then said that 400,000 baht had to be left in permanently!
I would hate to think what he might do if if he decided to make things difficult!

I very much doubt he deliberately swung his baton at the kid.
So he was going to have a second go?

Usually the goal, when Thai cops deal with fleeers, is to knock the bike over. They often do this by kicking them off. Volunteers are even worse as they are totally untrained, eager to prove themselves and younger and more impetuous.
Fleeing a checkpoint is a risky business. You have escalated the issue with the police. Thai police are irresponsible and unaccountable so if you choose to escalate with them, you are taking a big risk. Notice how the husband continued to escalate further by fighting with the police and then fleeing for a second time. You cannot count on the Thai police to be concerned about your safety.
Bad decisions all round.
"Notice how the husband continued to escalate further by fighting with the police and then fleeing for a second time."
"She said that the man was still not satisfied with what he had done - he raised his baton to strike again as the husband and father kicked out to prevent further injury. The family managed to get away."
So the family was supposed to stand still and do nothing when the "police" raised his baton to strike again - a toddler for goodness sake! And due to the fact that the child was vomiting and had to be taken to another hospital. I would not be surprised if there is not brain damage or a fractured skull.

"defiantly"? At first I thought you'd (definitely?) spelt it wrong, but when you mention "Thais" and "Immigration" in the same sentence, you got it right!

Thailand has made it's own bed. People have been paying agencies and "officials" cash for years and years to turn a blind eye. So, yes when they clamp down the figures can look big.
I wonder how many who pay regularly for "being looked after" have been raided?
Anyway, Thailand has every right to clean up it's act. and enforce it's laws. It will put a lot of agencies and visa runners out of business I am sure because if it is the strict way and no other way there will be no need for the friendly agencies that take a chunk of cash to circumnavigate the law. I am referring to retirees in this case.
A lot of retirees will be leaving and a lot of companies will be thinking twice about employing illegally.
"A lot of retirees will be leaving" Yes. a lot of retirees who spend an awful lot of money over the year!

Now that the "results" are in, how long before all the ballot papers are destroyed, therefore making it impossible to check any allegations of wrongdoing? (Surprised if they're not up in smoke already!)
