  1. Sounds like a good event, but unfortunately it's too far away for me to participate. I hope someone will consider organizing one down south.

Just out of curiosity, are you using an olympic size pool? If so, how are you going to handle the swimming if you have more than 20 swimmers?

    Good luck with your event!

  2. My advice is go to a local bike shop and spent about 12,000 baht on a basic mountain bike. Trek makes a model in that range, and I know many people who are pleased with it. You'll get better quality accessories (gears, brake pads, derailer) and the shop will know you're a valued customer and give you a good rate on tune-ups and repairs.

You can get a side mirror that will go into your handlebar for about 150 baht. A Cat Eye speedometer/odometer will cost you between 300 to 500 baht.

And most importantly, buy a quality helmet--and wear it.

  3. Don't the new drivers license come in both Thai and English?

I also need to return to the USA but will only have a 1 year. Anyone know if it is in English and Thai if it's accepted to drive in USA?

Otherwise, I have to wait 1 YEAR to go home to see the family. My current license from USA just expired and they would not renew by mail.

The Thai 5-year is in English and Thai - it's NOT valid in the USA unless you have the accompanying IDP. The Thai 5-year license is valid in all 10 ASEAN countries.

I just picked up a new one in BKK before I came to the US for a visit (I had lost my previous Thai license - actually, no I didn't, I just gave it to the cop when he gave me a ticket some time ago - had another cop pick it up later so I have 2 just in case I need to do the same thing again). Cost = 120 baht (or 140, I can't remember but it's cheap).

IDP you just get after you have your Thai license (I think you have to have the 5-year but I'm not sure). Cost for the IDP is 505 Baht. Took me 10 minutes to get both at the Thai-DMV which is near Saphan Kwai, Bangkok. You can access it from Vipawadee at the after the Suttisan intersection (back entrance) or from Pahonyothin right after the Mor Chit BTS stop going toward Sapan Kwai. IDP is valid for 1 year from date of issue and must be accompanied with the Thai license for it to be valid. It's valid in around 120 countries (but not the UAE, for some reason - you can drive in Somalia, but not the UAE!!!)

It is amazing the misleading information that gets posted---not just posted but emphatically, as though the poster knew the answer. I was just in California and rented a car using a Thai driver's license. If you go to the California DMV web site you will find that they accept drivers licenses issued by your country of residence (whatever country that is---Thailand included). California DMV specifically states that California DOES NOT accept IDPs, so far from being necessary, an IDP is useless.

I agree about the misleading information that has been posted on this subject.

Earlier this year I rented a car in Massachusetts from Hertz with a 5 year Thai driver's license which was printed in English and Thai. However, posters should check the DMV websites of the states they intend to drive in to determine whether or not it is legal to drive with a Thai license. My guess is that it is legal in all 50 states, but DYODD.

  4. Any student who feels compromised or victimized by learning English need only stop studying it.

English courses are mandatory for all students at the university I teach at. Whether an Engineering or Pharmacy major, they all have to take a couple of terms of English. If they "stop studying it", they won't graduate.

And my understanding is that English is taught at primary and secondary schools. I can't imagine that the students in these schools can simply "stop studying it".

  5. A colleague is getting married, and I am wondering how much to put in the envelope. We're not particularly close, but I do see him around the office a couple of times per week.

Several years ago I believe it was acceptable to put 300 - 500 baht in the envelope, but I'm wondering if that has changed at all due to inflation or other factors.

    Thanks.

  6. Thanks for all the great replies.

I'll take a look tomorrow to see if the oil is milky and then look at the air filter to see if it is wet.

Next weekend I'll take it into a shop to have the air filter changed and also have the radiator flushed and the fan checked.

Again, thank you for replying to this thread.

    :)

  7. I live down south, and during last week's flooding found myself in the unfortunate situation of having to drive though about 1.5 - 1.75 feet of water for approximately 100 yards. I have a Honda Jazz, and the water was up as least as high as the radiator (I know this because I picked off some leaves and other debris through the vent under the license plate).

While driving through the water, the car seemed to have a maximum speed of about 10 KM/ Hr. I was trying to get through it as quickly as possible, but it topped out at ten KM. Once I was through the water (again, it was about 100 yards) the car accelerated again with no problem. I was home soon after, and hoped too much damage hadn't been done.

I've taken the car out a few times since, and it's driving fine. But, the engine doesn't sound the same. Maybe it's just my imagination, but it might be slightly louder...and perhaps sound a somewhat 'labored'.

Any thoughts on what type of damage could have been done? I don't know much about cars, and if I take it into a shop, I'd like to have some idea of what might be wrong.

    Thanks.

  8. I've never been to Samui, and next week I'll need to go over on a short business trip. I'll need to get around a bit when I'm on the island, and I had originally planned to take my car over, but concern about the how long I will have to wait to get the car on the ferry has changed my mind---there is a meeting back on the mainland which I can't be late for.

Now I'm wondering about getting receipts from Samui taxi drivers so that I can be reimbursed by my employer. I'm hoping that someone could offer suggestions or recommend a taxi company which will readily supply receipts.

    Thanks.

  9. Is there a product available on Phuket that I could apply to a tile floor which will make it less slippery?

There is a product in the US called Johnny Grip, but it would be quite expensive to have it shipped over here, and I have to think that a local product is available. I just don't know what it is.

I am posting this in the Phuket section because I'll be visiting there later this week (from NST), and was hoping that someone could suggest a shop on Phuket where I could purchase a recommended product.

    Thank you.

  10. Does anyone know where I can buy a swivel mount for my LCD TV? The mount that came with my 32" Samsung is fixed.

    Thanks.

    :)

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm looking for a stand that swivels, not a wall mount.

  11. And I've only made a single claim in that time. In fact, in the last three years I haven't had any contact with them at all, except to pay the bill every year. But, I have acquired a few scratches and dents along the way. Nothing major, though.

Now I'd like to get these dents and scratches repaired, and I'm wondering if the insurance company (Viriyah) will cover incidents that took place two or three years ago that I didn't notify them about.

Since I've had first class insurance with the same company since the day I bought the car, I would think that they would be required to cover me, but I'm not really sure of what to expect when I contact them about this.

Any thoughts or relaying of personal experiences would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    :)
