When the farang do gooders take over
Moonlover replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I believe that's how it works in our village as well. Each according to their abilities to pay. But no one, not even the poorest is left out of the scheme. It's a far cry from the obscene profiteering that one often sees in the 'virtuous western' societies. -
When the farang do gooders take over
Moonlover replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
That certainly wouldn't work in our village. Every time someone dies a collection is made, small but sufficient to ensure that the deceased receives their funeral rites. No one misses out on their final journey to the cremation oven. And eventually I expect to be making the same journey. -
We were following each other around, except I ended up in Changi rather than Tengah.

Which in turn became BAE SYSTEMS. I worked for them in all three of their transmigrations and they still pay one of my pensions to this day. Well, that's a bit of a tenuous claim. This aircraft bears little resemblance to The Canberras that I worked on back in the early '60s. These were, in fact Martin B57s built under license, who were at least gracious enough to retain the original name and then much modified for high altitude work. The Canberra is, I my view, one of the most successful and versatile military aircraft ever built in post war Britain.

English Electric was not bought by BAE at all. English Electric, Vickers and Bristol Aviation were merged together to form the original British Aircraft Corporation. (BAC)

Italian businessman killed as motorcycle taxi collides with forklift
Moonlover replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Why the motorcycle rider? It was the fork lift driver who pulled out into the lane. He even admitted it. -
Italian businessman killed as motorcycle taxi collides with forklift
Moonlover replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Every accident has its own unique set of characteristics. Had the fork lift driver pulled out 1 sec earlier, it could have been the driver who took the impact, 1 sec later and he might have missed both of them. That's luck or fate however you want to see it. -
Which bikes and riders irritate you?

Those who've got nothing better to do than come on the forum at the weekend creating 'click bait' Get out for a ride O/P. -
Surely you should be asking for owners who've had their fridges for a long time and can vouch for their reliability and longevity. In that vein, I can vouch for Hitachi turbo Twin Fan. We've had it for 9 years, with only one minor problem when a fan failed. I was able to fix it myself with a pretty standard spare part from Lazada.

I lost an old 'mucker' of mine in the Oman to an accident like this. Fork lift came round a corner in a warehouse with the forks at head height! Old Pat never stood a chance. -
How do I pay my electricity bill online?
Moonlover replied to mrjohn's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
If your banking app or on line account doesn't support PEA payments, (some do, some don't) the easiest way to pay your electricity bill is with a direct debit. I have an account with BAAC which does support PEA payments. It takes me all of 5 minutes to pay our bill. -
I have also been an 'intermittent fasting' fan for a long time now. Nothing until breakfast, not even water after 6pm except a few small sips during the night if I feel that I'm getting dehydrated. My legs muscles usually alert me to that. I also adhere, as best as I can to the Mediterranean diet, which I enjoy anyway. Madam Moon understands my needs well. And importantly, no alcohol despite many temptations. The latter also helps me greatly with my enlarged prostate. For exercise I'll endeavor to walk at least an hour per day and I practice Qigong (similar to Tai Chi) for an hour a day. I also have an elliptical exerciser on which I regularly practice HIIT. Since I quit alcohol about a year ago I've lost 18kg and I'm now in the 'normal' range using the SBMI scale. I don't agree with the standard BMI which can be very misleading for us seniors. Find the SBMI website here. I'm 77 years young, fit and healthy and I give hospitals and doctors a wide berth. IMO they will charge you lots of money looking for problems that they can fix for even more money. Not unlike car mechanics really! (nothing personal Sheryl)

CODING ERA: Next Wave of Thailand’s Education
Moonlover replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Perhaps the author of that garbage above (yes you @Caldera) should make a brief study of just how far advanced in the sciences the Arab world once was compared to the so called 'developed world' which was, at the time mulling its way through the dark ages. Nations develop at different paces. They always have done and there is nothing unusual in one being a little bit behind others. Try comparing Thailand with some African nations and see what you come up with. -
The beauty of using an agent.
Moonlover replied to JeffersLos's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
There's sure to be some truth in what you say @KhunLA but it's not the whole story. This draconian measure was introduced by Big Joke during his brief reign as head of Immigration. He was after the corrupt collusion between the agents and IMM staff. The agents would lend the 'skink expats' the 800K THB so that they could show IMM that they had the necessary capital. That is not possible under this new ruling. But the game hasn't stopped so they've obviously found a workaround, which probably means more corruption instead of less. -
The beauty of using an agent.
Moonlover replied to JeffersLos's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
We have already discussed that scenario with our friendly and helpful immigration officer. If I ever get to that stage, my wife can act as my agent for free. I'm actually quite happy to prepare the paperwork for our annual trip to the office. I don't leave it all until the last minute, there is plenty one can do in advance. So it is not the onerous task that people make it out to be, It's 'horses for courses' isn't it. As has already been said, there are better things one can do with 10,000 THB IMO and there is a certain sense of satisfaction when that stamp is finally placed in my passport. A job well done. -
Wise account opening
Moonlover replied to kiko11's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
The THB account in the UK is not a 'real currency' account at all. What occurs when you convert your GBP into THB is what's known in currency trading as a 'notional currency swap'. It's not a real exchange at all, it's just numbers in a computer. Wise have fixed the 'notional value' of your GBP against the Baht until such times as you choose to send it to your account in Thailand, which may or may not be in your favour depending on how the markets move. -

I other words, I was correct! ''Wise will not accept payments from a Thai bank''. -
Wise account opening
Moonlover replied to kiko11's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You really do seem to have got hold of 'the wrong end of the stick' Kiko. (I hope you understand that term) Wise is used by it's Thai based clients to send money to Thailand, not from it. As you have discovered, Wise will not accept payments from a Thai bank. You make your deposit in your home currency (EUD, GBP. USD etc) and have it converted into THB for deposit in your Thai bank account. In short, it's a one way street. Some of the stuff I've read in this thread is a complete load of nonsense. Just follow the instructions on Wise's website and you'll be fine. -

Ah a direct debit of course. Thanks for that tip. -
Wise or swift
Moonlover replied to Harveyboy's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Actually it was me (plus 1 other) because, as far as I can tell it isn't possible. The Wise app will not accept a credit card number. However I'm not panicking over this. There seems to be no wholesale rejection of the accounts of expats and there must be thousands of us. The Brexit angle might just be an excuse. -

Moonlover replied to Harveyboy's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You have been told correctly I quote: 'Like we mentioned before, Wise isn’t a bank — but a Money Services provider'. https://wise.com/us/blog/wise-as-bank-account#:~:text=Like we mentioned before%2C Wise, and sending international bank transfers. Bad news about the account closures. No problem for me as it's easy to switch my pension payments to Wise (2 do so already) but it means problems servicing my UK credit card which is a bit of a nuisance. -
Well, I don't know whether that's true or not although I doubt it. But if you block the number straight away they can't can they.
-
I don't even answer. I have a fairly short list of 'legitimate' callers. Any number that is not on that list gets 'ignored' and 'blocked' using my facility phones for that. Wasting ones time shouting at them is just that, a complete waste of time. Call centre operatives are used to that and just shrug it off and move on the the next number.

Moonlover replied to Harveyboy's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
@Harveyboy Which is this bank that is telling you that all 'foreign accounts' are to be closed and how do they define what a 'foreign account' actually is? @MJCMabove is correct by the way. SWIFT is a money transaction method, not a bank. Nothing wrong with Wise BTW. I've been using them for many years without a hitch.
