Salaries for police and military, especially at lower ranks are pitifully low, which encourages corruption and the need for other income. It costs me money to send my wife to work in transport and uniform expenses. They don’t even reimburse official travel costs. Without the family wide health care (same as Thai citizens at Govt hospitals) the pension and job security, it would not be worth her working.

Bumrungrad Hospital battles online investment scam
Classic Ray replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Hooking the fish with greed as the bait. What sensible person would think that this high end hospital would need to raise money with adverts on Facebook or LINE? -
What do Thais think when they visit the South of France and see people sunbathing and even supermarket shopping in the nude? As a tourist destination, maybe it’s time for Thailand to make allowances for people from other cultures who after all are helping to support the incomes of so many locals. I’m not saying their trunks are appropriate for temple visits, but beaches and airports are not holy places.

Formula Hmong Racing Enthusiasts Echo through the Mountains
Classic Ray replied to snoop1130's topic in Isaan News
This would be a wonderful activity to expand for tourists. There could be national and international championships of what is a sustainable and non-polluting competition, and might even attract some of the youth away from their motorcycles, especially if the prizes and fame were increased. -
Taiwanese Man Arrested in Pattaya for Overstay and Money Laundering
Classic Ray replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
If more Immigration Police were deployed on enforcement of overstay rather than concentrating (and fining) long term legal residents or tourists, problems like this could be reduced. But of course the income stream would be reduced. -
Years ago many UK police forces refused to admit drug problems in their areas so did not form Drug Squads. Amazingly when they were forced to, the scale of the problems was revealed. Teaching and the care professions can attract abusers, especially in countries like Thailand where there are no effective prevention or detection measures like List 99, and undocumented teachers can find work, and victims. More needs to be done to check teacher’s backgrounds and stop treating them like demigods.

Three people to be charged with owning a lion without a permit
Classic Ray replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
How can they be charged with possession without a permit when later in the article it says it was purchased and a permit obtained? Different people? -
Held hostage for extra day in private hospital in Chiang Mai after knocked off mcycle until at fault driver’s insurance agreed to pay. Now have Govt cover with wife’s job at public hospital in BKK. To see doctor takes all day but consult plus drugs is 50 baht, so worth the wait. They always quote real cost of drugs for my condition, over 24k every 3 months. High standard of care, they also take cash for foreigners, have several ATMs.

Belgian fugitive convicted for attempted murder arrested in Thailand
Classic Ray replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Why blur his photograph? He has already been convicted, traced and arrested for the crime. There is no issue regarding identification and I presume this arrest has been at the instigation of/arranged by the Belgian authorities rather than any sleuthing by the RTP as he has remained undetected and employed in Thailand for years. -

Lone Kuwaiti Tourist Fights Off Five Young Teen Robbers in Pattaya

Why are care proceedings not considered if they are allowed to roam in a gang at 3am? Also consideration should be given to lowering the age of criminal responsibility to 10 years as in some other countries.- 116 replies

Got diverted from Munich in a thunderstorm while en route from Heathrow to Bangkok, landed in a minor airport of Milan. Promptly abandoned by all Lufthansa staff and left with two ground handling agents completely overwhelmed trying to book 300 passengers individually into hotels. Most taxi drivers would not take the passengers. No means of booking hotels and coaches en masse. Eventually next day they booked me into a hotel 60km from airport where I was looked after well. Had to rebook my own flight (free) via Geneva next day as no flights direct to Bangkok. Will not fly Lufthansa again or take anything but a direct flight.

Construction worker killed in crane accident on Rama II, Bangkok
Classic Ray replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Another negative effect of the defamation laws, where the press are not allowed to name and shame the company/companies involved. Coupled with lax investigation and enforcement of health and safety legislation with no/little worker compensation, it’s no surprise that incidents like this happen here constantly. -
Thai herbs: Nature’s secret weapon against deadly PM2.5 dust
Classic Ray replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If you look at the air quality graphics from NASA often published here, you will see the centres of pollution coincide with the agricultural areas and borders where crop burning is practiced and industrial areas and conurbations. Instead of trying to cure the symptoms it would be better if the government concentrated on pressuring the countries, companies and individuals causing the pollution, including the vehicles that they allow with pollutants coming from their exhausts. -
Please quote these studies. Other posters have pointed out the dangers of smoking and alcohol consumption, both protected by a government that for tobacco operates a monopoly and for alcohol is proposing a lowering of tax rates to increase consumption. Hypocritical? But of course they make a lot of taxation revenue from both of these.

My wife and I both got jobs in Bangkok so moved there. First rented a house on a mooban 100m from Ban Thap Chang ARL station. It was very quiet, in a cul de sac, even with the station PA announcements and trains. Now bought a house on a large mooban in Prawet, ten minutes walk from Paseo and Robinsons. As it is set back from the main road there is no traffic noise, birds and squirrels in the garden, little passing traffic and no PA trucks or noisy neighbours. Even in busy cities there are places where annoying noise is absent, you just have to seek them out.
