  1. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning from a Gas Fire etc in an enclosed space, I get. (we have a CO monitor for when we go camping in cold weather in the UK and use a gas heater), But... to fall out of bed, roll into a fire and burn - without waking up ???.... How out of it does one have to be ???? Is it even possible to be 'that out of it' - that you would notice you've rolled into a fire ?? (I guess it is).
  2. Any place is full of cyber scammers. Cyber criminality knows no boundaries. Very true..... In ANY country I had had a phone, I've been contacted (cold called) with scam attempts. This was particularly rife in the UAE and Qatar.... In Qatar I had someone calling up claiming to be from the Ministry of Interior - all quite official sounding, but of course a scam. The UAE has just passed strict cold calling laws. In Thailand, the cold calling and scam attempts is just as bad as anywhere else - Its the constant e-mail scams that are irritating... some quite legitimate looking e-mails come through (i.e. Apple accounts and PayPal etc).. never click on any link in an e-mail.
  3. Its looking very suspicious - obviously they 'have' to find this other man... I'm surprised they have not released a CCTV image of him already (as a person of interest). If he is involved, I suspect its likely he has fled already.
  4. You're making a right old pillock of yourself... Just deal with the fact that you've been called out for making dumb comments instead of digging your 'face saving hole' even deeper.....
  5. Ironically, refusing to shop at one store because you don't want to give out your e-mail address and instead using another store where you have to register with an e-mail account !!! I'm not sure you really thought your objection through. It's often entertaining on here to read of some of the objections people have and watch them tripping over themselves and getting in their own way.... When Thai's comment 'Farang think too much' - these are the examples they mean !
  6. Pretty much, 100% of the shops that I order online from.... As do all of the shops from which I make a purchase which involves registering for a warranty. It is of course your choice, and I'm not questioning that freedom of choice not to provide your detail. I am questioning the logic process to make your life a little bit more difficult because you refuse to give an e-mail that 100's of stores and businesses already have. I wonder if all the 'other reviewers' that don't agree with this policy are also of the 'boomer persuasion' and get upset and the insignificant things. By giving your e-mail address you were never going to lose anything or encounter inconvenience. By not giving your e-mail address you've added an element of inconvenience to your life as you now have to shop elsewhere, are less likely to find the same quality or the same price point. So..... You'll end up getting the same item from Lazada, who, you've guessed it - have your e-mail address !!!
  7. Yup... but giving them your e-mail address is hardly a difficult thing to do - also Decathlon have online orders... So, we don't even need to go there !!... (if someone is not going to be stubborn and withhold their e-mail address) - I just find that all a little bit neurotic. Decathlon don't send spam & junk mail etc - which is why some may object, otherwise, its just stubbornness for no reason.
  8. Cut off your own nose to spite your face much ?......... Whats so hard about giving them your e-mail ??? Every time you purchase something online (Lazada / Amazon etc or any other online shops) they all have your e-mail... some people act as if their e-mail is a state secret !!!
  9. Its possible there was a cascading failure whereby Hydraulic power was available when the Pilots decided to make the 'go-around'... However, deteriorating systems, possibly the loss of the second engine necessitated the 'north to south'l anding without power and minimal hydraulics (but no flaps / slats / landing gear).
  10. Its a crash-landing !!!... You are presenting your agreement as if they have a choice which shows a profound misunderstanding. I'd expect even an arm-chair expert to draw more logical conclusions than you have managed - some of your comments are outright odd. What is comical is that you fail to grasp the concept of cascading failure. Astonishing - You seem serious enough with your comments, but I'm struggling not to wonder if you are not trolling. You write as if the Pilot had options and 'chose to crash land a plane' instead of 'going around again' when its blatantly clear, there were no other options than get the plane down. You've previously mentioned landing on the water, which is just ridiculous, highlighting that you have not learned a thing from the hundreds of hours of 'air-crash' investigations you watched. So, they crash landed because the experienced pilot 'wanted to' ???
  11. The 1949 IDP is valid for 1 year The 1968 IDP is valid for 3 year As you mention, the Post office has stopped issuing IDP's. IDP's in the UK still need to be obtained in person (a real PITA) from 'PayPoint' Stores. https://consumer.paypoint.com/international-driving-permits Its a shame we can't apply online. We (Wife and I) just received a 1949 IDP from the DLT - while there we were told we can apply online.
  12. There's enough information that has repeatedly shown the flaws in your comments - you are unable to handle that and instead choose to double down with your broken argument. - And IDP is not needed for holders of UK Driving Licenses to legally drive in Thailand - Thai's can drive in the UK on Thai Licenses for up to a year (part of a bilateral agreement) - UK License holder without an IDP can obtain a Thai license without doing full Driving test - Those older than 70 renewing their UK license (every 3 years) need to make a medical declaration
  13. You have some sort of mental instability issue where you believe you are the only one capable of presenting information.... You accused me of being 'wrong in EVERY post' then go on to post the same thing !!.... ... utterly dumb.
  14. so wrong again! You have made serious errors in EVERY post so far - you really should take time off and get yourself up to speed. Such a foolish and ill-informed comment from the wannabe oracle on anything 'road related'... When applying for a License over 70, you have to 'declare' your eyesight. You also have to have the 'approval of your GP' to continue driving - In reality that means your GP has not told you to stop driving due to health / medical reasons. https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70
  15. Exactly - Perfectly explained....
  16. No its not - thats why you have Weekly, Monthly and Yearly rates - just look at serviced apartments, many have long term rates and nightly rates - exactly what the Op is discussing. Ah... the 'if you don't like it go elsewhere argument' ... it really is not a strong argument, its quite dumb in fact. Dumb attempt to point score... that would be as dumb as someone asking you if you defend every policy you see in Thailand no matter how disagreeable - You've clearly taken a stance, no need to double down with stupidity. No you don't - you just think you do. The reality is that there are a myriad of different policies applied throughout the country. ... The perfect example of this is this very subject - The Op has previously stayed on Per-month basis and had extra days charged on a pro-rata basis. After a 'new manager' has started working, he changed the policy. So no, your question (is the nightly rate appropriate) is not the 'only' question - it is perfectly reasonable of the Op to ask why he is not receiving the same pro-rata status for the days spent over a month, when previously he did.
  17. Well done.. you've managed to shoe-horn in the words dimwitted, entitled, complaining and a gaslit with an unrelated example... Now.. to respond in kind: The 'dimwitted' are those that fall for this sort of BS... If you think an expectation of fair or reasonable treatment is entitled, then you've spent half of your life getting walked over like a door-matt. Basic reading comprehension: Expressing comments that relate to and understand the Ops point is not a complaint - learn to understand the context of what you read before attempting to point score. Your beer example is daft non-sequitur - while the principle may seem related to you, its actually a completely unrelated.
  18. In the UK, anyone over 70 years old has to renew their license very 3 years, a 'medical declaration' is required - which is somewhat farcical as there are no third parties involved - those over 70 can self declare... So... It makes sense that those over 70 have a GP sign off on approving 'clear to drive status' - however, the issue then becomes one of liability for the GP - so there are legal complexities involved. -------- I recall a news article where the former Mayor of Worcester had an car accident in which his wife died (both late 80's) - he'd drifted over the centre line hitting another car head on - fortunately those in the other car (a Volvo XC-90) did not suffer severe injures - However, the former Mayor is now not remembered for all the good he did, but for being the cause of a car accident in which his wife died.
  19. IF the Policy is not a named Policy (or you are named on the Policy) you are driving legally with a UK License (or licence in English Language) or with a License not in English accompanied by an IDP. Regarding how long you've been here - that gets more complex and there 'could' be room for insurance to 'wiggle out' IF you've been here a number of days beyond the policy allowance. Some posters in the past have noted in the past that there is a 'time limit' on the duration with which you can drive under your IDP (or without when holding an License in English) - but the waters start to get muddied; what happens if you depart Thailand and re-enter ? - does that reset the days ? etc.... That said: Thai Vehicle insurance companies are remarkably relaxed when it comes to all of these factors. Regardless: due to all this ambiguity - the best option for any long termer is clearly to get a Thai License - they're easy to get (also, IF your License is in English Language you don't need an IDP to get a Thai License)
  20. no such thing. Is your home License (presumably from the UK) in Swahili ?.... Or is it in the English Language ???
  21. I don't try and gainsay... I'm just bemused by the fact that you think you are such an expert yet half of what you write is utter rubbish...
  22. There are a couple of facets to this: Firstly - Thailand is a signatory to the 1968 Vienna Convention - those IDP's are valid for 3 years (the 1949 IDP is valid for 1 year). Different countries have varying information on how long a 'visitor' can drive, and that supersedes the validity of the IDP, but an added complexity there is the 'per visit' basis. In Thailand, its long been discussed that the maximum length someone can drive on their Foreign licence (and IDP) is 90 days... but I've never seen that officially mentioned anywhere - though it could be in insurance small print. Another facet: 'resident visas' - if someone holds a resident Visa (they are supposed to get a Thai Driving License... and I believe this creates the 'grey area' - I've never actually seen a time limit on using an IDP (when / if its required). With regards to licenses in English - there exists a bilateral agreement between some nations, Thailand allows those holding Driving Licenses in English Language to drive on their National License (I'm unsure of the time limit), and those same nations allow Thai Drivers to drive in their country. i.e. Thai's can drive in the UK for up to 12 months using their Thai license - there is no need for an IDP - and those with UK licenses can drive in Thailand (without an IDP). https://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/thailand/transport/driving-licences (though not an official source - this sums it up). Also note: Its still of course advisable to have a Thai License here if you are a long termer. Text from the Thai Motor Vehicle Act
  23. Not if your the license from your home nation is in the English Language. Depending on the type of Visa you have, you can drive on your home (i.e. UK) license here and an IDP is not required. Also note: If someone carries a resident visa (i.e. A Non-Immigrant Visa), they are 'supposed to secure a Thai Driving licence'... (I've never actually read or heard of any enforcement of this though).
  24. ..... All Thai's think they are driving a boat... You've excelled yourself !!! Except you of course, remember, you know all about roads, no one else does !!! Fundamentally racist as in sweeping a whole nation with the generalisation that they have never got beyond 'boats'... You do come up with some amusing rubbish...
  25. IF the Apps are not accepting Debit Cards (Bangkok Bank), could you get a Credit Card ?? Most Banks will allow a 'stored value credit card' with preloaded funds ? (essentially its just another DebitCard, but you have to load it separately and it works 'as a credit card' when some digital payments will not accept a Debit Card.
