I hope that 'following his legal proceedings' means following going through the legal process, being charged (at least the minimum 5 years (and up to 15) and serving that sentence, before he is deported and permanently banned from re-entering Thailand... ... otherwise, just being sent home is an incredibly soft charge for this behavior.

Your reads more like a 'boomer anti-backpacker rant' than anything else... You were unable to travel in a gap year and now shoe-horn in reasons to look down on those who can... You mention adventurousness with sarcasm, yet have travelled to exactly the same place as those you criticise and you know the price of a McDonalds there !!!... ... And then left because you stuck out like a sore thumb - no one wanted to talk with the miserable old boomer ??? ... All you have alluded to in your post is that you can't research your destinations and don't like being around younger people... this is an issue with you, not them.

Psychological harm is just as bad as physical harm... the attacker didn't need to cause any physical damage for 'harm' to exist... She was petrified, this could take her time to get over.... Imagine her fear next time she gets in a lift and another male enters... There is no 'extreme self righteous judgement' there is just 'simple judgement'... Its not faux at all. Its surprising that people such as yourself remain so ignorant to the realities of such issues - make no mistake, this was a sexual attack, it frightened the young girl. IF this was your daughter - would to tell her to 'get over it - theres no physical harm' ???? (and don't answer that you don't have a daughter - that much is obvious due to your ignorance - but the point still remains).

Theives are usually in your head. Even if you do get some riff raff it's not worth the expenditure in security in my opinion to have manned posts and a guarded compound that feels like you are entering a "facility". It's overkill. The community fees include a lot of other items... Gym, Pool, Gardening etc.. Thus: in a 100 House Moobaan... we're paying about 600 baht per month for security... Opportunistic crime is an issue in Thailand.. Wife's Parents had a holiday home outside of Bangkok (it wasn't in a moobaan) - they had a full time maid, who just had to keep and stay there so the house was ready whenever they or we wanted to turn up - even though she was paid well she was bored and quit... Within 6 months the house was gutted. We travel a lot - often away for a month in the summer - for 600 baht per month, thats a great deal. We dont need to worry about the car, our motorcycle - its in outside storage - decent bicycles, golf clubs, skiis etc. I would not live in a house in Thailand without security... And... the manner in which you use the 'manned post' term, implies an prison or army type scenario - its not that at all... the feeling is 'secure environment'...

So do thieves... thats kind of the objective...

Sorry, I'm not sure about that. Alcohol on Thailands Railways was banned in 2014 after the assault and murder of a 13 year old girl on a train by a drunk railway employee. This month the SRT proposed the idea to reintroduce alcohol on trains. So... in answer to your question - officially no, alcohol is not permitted on trains in Thailand. Realistically, you should be ok to take your own on the train, just be discrete. We were going to have a 'lads and Dads trip up to Chiang Mai... Train up, do a trek... then fly back a few days later... I wasn't planning on doing that train journey without a night-cap !!..

How much do you pay for health insurance?
richard_smith237 replied to rudi49jr's topic in Insurance in Thailand
Hard to disagree with @mogandave's statement IMHO if he's referring exclusively to loosely-regulated policies with Thai underwriters! He's stated there is 'no such thing as Health Insurance'... Which is impossible to agree with when having carried something 'Health Insurance' for decades (both Thai and International Policies).... So.. what do you carry ???... Is it Health Insurance or Travel Insurance ? -
My point: Its impossible to know... I've been to plenty of bars in Bangkok, regular Bars (i.e. Sports bars) and found that the Whisky is not genuine... I've complained about this in the past: (even in another thread - below). https://aseannow.com/topic/942918-fake-liquor/ I think the statement that you only ever drink in bars where you know the spirits are genuine is a bit of a stretch.... actually, I think its a ridiculous claim.... Agree - so very tragic... Even without you accusing the deceased of not exercising common sense. Its kind of like suggesting people who are in a Bus accident in Thailand of not exercising common sense because the bus they were on crashed... ... These deaths are not their fault...

The law in the USA varies from state to state. But - some states allow Mobility Scooters on Urban roads with speed limits of 25mph, providing the operators are over 16 years old and have a valid drivers license. Such states are: California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Washington DC, Georgia (and not limitied to these). The 'legality' argument is flawed as its based on poor knowledge of overseas laws. Its also based on poor knowledge of Thailands laws.

This is awful - I really hope the whole 'bootlegging' industry is brought to its knees over this... Those responsible need to be hung drawn and quartered... I wouldn't even know where to start, but fear the families of these poor young people will never see justice - so very sad. I have a niece travelling soon.. there is so much I have to warn her not to do in South East Asia....
-
Thats the 'only' place you have ever drank spirits at in South East Asia... Hmm... .... Smells rather faecal... You've stated your claim... why not double down with BS to save face... ----------- And, the primary point is... Its very normal for people to order spirits in a bar... its not quite the breach of 'common sense' you suggest.... ... Monday morning quarterbacking this news and laying the blame at the feet of the deceased for not exercising common sense is rather poor form.
-
Is it ?.. have you never ordered a Gin&Tonic, Whisky, Vodka Coke in a bar over here ? Never ordered a cocktail ?... Only ever drink beer ???? Are you certain that 'your ounce' of common sense give you a 100% guarantee that you'll never risk drinking bootlegged liquor ? ... Of course not, which is why your response is sanctimonious tosh...
-
Bootleg liquor is rife in Bangkok... When out there is only 'so much beers' that can be consumed and I'm too full. I switch to neat Whisky (JW black on ice or something similar) I can tell when its fake booze - the owners never care - I don't make a scene, I just pay and leave... .. but, its annoying - the fake stuff can give a more exaggerated hangover which I don't get when drinking the same amounts beers / wine / Whisky with friends at my house or theirs.... From a personal perspective its just flipping annoying - but clearly from this perspective it can be deadly.

Foreign Man Found Unconscious in Car in Pattaya
richard_smith237 replied to Georgealbert's topic in Pattaya News
Numerous reasons: 1) Fulling the void of insufficient information. 2) Curiosity and a desire for understanding. 3) To learn what happened and ensure it doesn't happen to them. 4) Sharing perspectives. 5) Lack of Trust in official sources. 6) For the purpose of general discussion - its a forum designed for this purpose. It always strikes me as strange, when on a forum designed specifically for interaction and discussion that people post comments such as your questioning why people are speculate and discuss... Surely a News site is more appropriate if you wish avoid discussions... -
haha - fair play... I've seen so many people take that same photo... usually with the hat though !!!
-
I assume the steps to the bar at the rear of the plane. Never saw them, never went down stairs. Steps are at both the front and the back... Anyway... I can imagine the scene... upstairs on the Emirates A380, putting on the flight attendants hat and having your photo taken in the bar... Tell me you never did that !!!! .... But my reference was to Chang drinkers sitting on the steps of a 7-11.
-
Airlines stopped providing Chang on flights as It caused to much of an issue when the punters wanted to sit on the steps in the A380...
-
Yep - nothing personal (again) and its interesting to see things from a different perspective even if we don't agree. I don't live in Pattaya, so I don't know how much of a 'blight' these Mobility scooters are to the traffic / road systems - but given all the other causes to road difficulties, I can't see that these modes of transport make things any worse. The roads are not 'unsuitable' for their choice of transport - they have no issues getting around (give or take the odd crate strewn in a road) It is the very suitability of this type of transport that makes it popular for those with mobility issues in Places like Pattaya in the first place. The only issue here is that 'some' have a whinge about it and for some reason they pin-point this as an issue in an area with a multitude of far more significant issues.

Anyone ever taken anti anxiety meds in Thailand?
richard_smith237 replied to ubonr1971's topic in Health and Medicine
What the hell are you going on about?????????? He's not wrong... Like Benzodiazapines, SSRI need to be administered with great care... If after routinely taking such medication suddenly stopping can have dire consequences to the brain chemistry and psychology, with risk of Worsening Depression, Increased Risk of Suicidal Thoughts, Mood Changes, Cognitive issues.. That said: the last comment is rather insensitive - its clear from the Ops question that he's tried to learn to deal with his problems and is looking for help and guidance from those who have faced similar situations.
