Bangkok taxi driver berates passenger over travel distance
richard_smith237 replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
Ah.. I get your point... So, its the usual story... no one can be bothered to make the effort to do something about it. -
"She' s just not that into you" Its obviously difficult to tell from that one post - but if thats how you are feeling, then you're the best person to interpret your position - this isn't about 'Thai-Western' relationships and how they different between a 'Western-Western' relationships... on forums such as this there have long been so many suggestions of the differences etc... but in reality, a relationship is a relationship no matter the culture or nationality of parties involved.... There is no big difference here... its natural for people to want their space, its natural for a couple to want to be together and enjoy each others company around the space, or rather wanting a bit of space is healthy and natural when spending lots of time together. In this case - you imply she's spending all the time away from you... thats not a good sign. Some natural conclusions can be drawn.... 'going back to party with the family' is a big red flag, particularly if she has not invited you with her... ... the common themes and suggestions from threads such as this in the past always lead to the result that there was an ex or another fella in there somewhere... I've just had a mate who's wife was behaving in a similarly suspicious manner - visiting 'friends' and 'family' etc... (she was playing about)...

Your Girlfriend's Average Sandwich Quota
richard_smith237 replied to Chris Daley's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
They sell neither Evaporated Milk nor Condensed Milk in Thailand 😉 Its becoming clear, just as it is in every single thread in which NowNow posts, that he is being deliberately obtuse and attempting to trivialise the original discussion, escalate tension through mocking tones and irrelevant remarks. He focuses on sarcastic, belittling claims, and detracts from any productive or meaningful debate, seemingly with the intention of always aiming to provoke. His repetitive approach to shift the conversation from the thread's intent to unnecessary argument and engage in disruptive behavior reveals that his only intention is to stir conflict rather than contribute constructively. NowNow just a troll - I've never seen him contribute constructively to a thread. The rest of the world considers the Carnation brand of condensed milk as real condensed milk. Carnation is a well-known brand that produces both sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk. Their sweetened condensed milk is made by removing most of the water from cow's milk and adding sugar, which thickens and sweetens it - AND, it is sold and used widely in Thailand. -

Its impossible not to be 'somewhat' responsive to such a basic request borne out of laziness... If you don't understand something - how can you not google it yourself ???? doing so is actually a lot faster than the back and forth with the bickering you trigger... HERE >>> The very first hit of a very simple google search: Villa Market - Link: BigC - Link: Google is your friend - Link: ...and as you may be too lazy to click the links... Here in a pretty picture !!! -
I think this proves that once colouring slightly outside the lines, the Immigration Officers often do not know the regulations, but in a measure of saving face 'guess at a rule' in an authoritative manner.... ... this can always be questioned (politely of course) - In my experience the Immigration Officers can often be mistaken and a more senior officer is required to resolve a basic error.

Thailand launches app to replace physical driving licences
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
That could be an issue.... IF a Driving Licence was obtained under a previous Passport (as proof of ID)... then when attempting to use the DLT App the user punches in the newer Passport Number as his registered ID number - there will be no 'linked information'... In which case the solution is to use the Previous Passport number and to access the 'account holders' information on the DLT App. Then, when renewing the Driving Licence in future, use the new passport (obviously) which will then require going through the simple process of updating the DLT app again. -

Handy? I tried to decipher what lapamita had written - but its just too jumbled. Foreigners can use the DLT App (loads already do) - the App is located on App stores geocached to Thailand, thus one may need to 'alter' their App Store location to Thailand so they can download this App. (I think thats what he meant anyway). -
Thailand launches app to replace physical driving licences
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The Thai Version of the App remains extremely simple to use if all you are doing is 'storing' your Drivers License information in it... (takes a few mins)... If struggling due to the Thai, can take a screen-shot and use GoogleTranslate App to make it easier. But as others have mentioned, the App is not necessary - but it does remove a potential hassle if someone forgets to carry their physical driving license with them. -

They should perhaps stay off the roads if they lack the basic sense to work the solution to that one out !!! -

I imagine those who are asked to show their driving licence at police check points or if involved in an incident care... Duh ! -
Cruise Liner From Singapore Arrives in Phuket with 3,700 Tourists

<Removed post edited out> Will the vans & TukTuk drivers blockade the entrance to the ports, massively inflate prices and ensure there is no Grab / Bolt / InDrive services that can get access ???? -
When Thai citizens renew their passports in Thailand they show the old passport to the officers but the passport stays with the person and not given to the officers. The old passport stays uncut and unpunctured. They used to cut the corners years ago, but no longer OK - but they still cut the Corner on a British Passport - once the renewal is issued (i.e. at the VFS centre when picking up the new Passport - the old one is clipped and then returned). As far as Thai Passports are concerned - My Wife has longer term Visa's in her Thai Passports, and that remains uncut - so she will enter the UK on her New Thai Passport, but also have to show her 10 year Visa in her older passport. As far as US Passports are concerned - I'm not sure at which stage they are 'punched' - but, based on info in this thread so far, it would seem that IF it is requested, the return of the original passport is fast tracked (for a Fast track fee), I'm not sure if this is still posted to the US and returned quickly, or if the US Embassy in Bangkok can 'punch the passport' there and immediately return to the passport holder (I'm not sure on this matter).

You need to provide some 'better' or more specific information when presenting a contradiction - i.e. did you apply remotely via post by any chance ? The last 4 UK Passports renewals I have made (for myself and Son) have been made in person and the VFS centre in Bangkok. I have not used agents or a postal service. The Application has been made in person, at the VFS centre - I have kept my British Passport on my person (or my Sons) - then when collecting the new Passport, I handed the old Passport over which was then Clipped. (The latest first hand information I have of doing this was in May 2023).

Great info thanks... (below is the image from that link). Seems both Pink ID and Driving Licence are now acceptable across the board of airlines and airports for domestic travel. Though I'd carry a copy of this press release to ensure compliance by the airlines which may not always be up to date with latest regulations.

I think by the time the child is 15 years old... All sense or manner of 'control' and 'discipline' has been lost... The discipline etc starts young from infancy... the seeds planted at 5 year old, grow with the 15 year old.... But if parents have no sense of discipline whatsoever, then its down to both nature and pure fortune that a child will be well behaved, otherwise with the nature of a challenging child without and form of discipline the seeds of a 5 year old grow into an out of control rebellious 15 year old who is no longer respectful of anything around them.

Yup - thats pretty much what it is IMO... Young teens have grown up without discipline and run the roost a home. Our maid has one such 'troublesome' teen - now 15 years old. He's been stabbed... a mate of his was killed (in one those technical college flights). The lad has had to move schools (tech colleges) for his safety, his mother has to take him to school and pick up him to avoid him getting into further conflict. But, he takes his bike out at night and, goes racing and trashes the bike (parents have to work - mum is a part time maid and works at a restaurant / father is a driver for a Japanese business man). Then before we know it, the maid walking (10mins) to hour house, she's loaned him her bike (why did he have a bike in the first place is my question). Then... again, he crashes that bike (seems not to be his fault this time) nearly loses a foot, needs an operation (por-ror-bor pays - fortunately he's on his mum's bike and has a license, so thats one part that is ok).... So.. now the family has no bike, a 15 year old kid who can't walk for 2 months. So dysfunctional... I wonder how many families there are going through the same troubles here.... Probably the same in the UK too, particularly in the inner-cities and area's we never want to visit - but in Bangkok, this stuff is occurring on our doorstep.

Two Men Survive Capsized Boat Ordeal For 4 Hours

The same mindset refused to invest in a helmet for their motorcycle riding... ... A life jacket or buoyancy aid... The mentality is 'why spend money on something that may not be needed ?'.... -
Hmmm... so the pick-up slowed as the lights turned yellow-red... But the Van driver saw the lights changing and 'gunned it' also expecting the pickup to 'gun it'... before he realised the pickup was stopping, it was too late to avoid him.... Purely speculative - but this seems standard procedure here to 'accelerate' if drivers think the lights are about to change, instead of gently slowing down. Also - 19 passengers were crammed into a 14 seater van - that highlights the safety standards at play here... seatbelts ??? (chances any were worn at all ?)... ------------ Mini-van deaths after mini-van deaths... Trucks with break failure blowing through lights - wiping out a family... Busses rolling down a ravine - killing travellers... Boats capsizing in flooded waters of Chaophraya - Killing passengers... InterIsland speed boats / longtail boats capsizing killing - tourists... Unsupervised infants and children drowning in ponds... An almost weekly common theme of completely avoidable deaths... 'Talks of change'... clearly these talks of change never happen... !!! https://thethaiger.com/news/national/horrific-chonburi-collision-spurs-talks-change

Bangkok taxi driver berates passenger over travel distance
richard_smith237 replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
Yup... I suspect the same... Usually, there is a photo of the driver at the front of the taxi (passenger side on the dash), its common to see that Thai Licence ID photo does not match the driver we get (in the regular taxi's)... ... I wonder if this voids the insurance the Taxi's carry. Or... if they are legitimate taxi drives, who share, but have not bothered to switch over the licensing plaque / display thingy (or whatever its called). I agree with the comments - they know who the official driver was supposed to be and he subleased, in which case, the 'official driver' knows who the other driver was, but is refusing to give up the info - the taxi company is protecting their practices of 'unofficially allowing' subleasing, as this voids their insurance - it also means they have to hold drivers accountable and this is just 'effort'... in an industry were regulation is minimal at best. -
A punched passport is no longer a valid travel document - thus, I dont think it can be used as an International Travel Document.... But it may still be 'usable' for domestically travel where its use as a form of Government issued ID is still valid. The UK system - the Passport is only 'clipped' (corner clipped off) when we physically pickup the new / replacement passport at VFS. Receiving a passport by post obviously changes the logistics of this.

The pink ID card has your name in Thai script ONLY whereas a Thai ID card AND ticket/boarding pass, has the name in English. Minimum security checks for both name and photo. I am sure that someone will claim that they have managed to board a domestic flight with a pink ID card, but it isn't recognized by the authorities as an acceptable photo ID for foreigners. Its not a 'claim' its a fact... I have had the Pink ID accepted when boarding for domestic flights over the past couple of years.... at both the Thai Airways Check-in, and security check-point - never an issue so it clearly is 'recognised' by check-in staff and the Security for domestic flights. That said, I did read that Air-Asia will not accept a pink ID at check-in and request a Passport. Thus: experience clearly varies. (I wouldn't want to travel with only a Pink ID or only a Driving License - my passport always travels with me when leaving the province, its there just in case, tucked away in my bag). I have had the Pink ID accepted as proof of ID whenever stopped by the Police in Bangkok. In such cases, I'm sure a Driving License will also be accepted, or a Photo of your Passport on your Phone - in many cases the BiB are just looking for some form of compliance and are happy to see you on your way.

I fully agree. The cheapskate should let her keep the ring! The Op hasn't been back... but any decision to keep 'assets' is dependent on the reason for the decision to no-longer go-ahead with the marriage. For example - had she been caught 'playing around' triggering the reason not to go ahead, why should she financially profit with an expensive item of jewellery ? Equally, so, if this is a respectable female, who now faces some embarrassment just because the Op 'changed his mind on a whim' then it could be argued the ring is hers and was a gift. Its not about being a cheapskate or otherwise, in many cases it could be about principle.
