  1. That said, the dual ballot system was originally created under the 2011 Constitution. After the 2014 military coup and creation of the pro-military 2017, the dual ballot system was replaced with a unitary ballot system. The new 2017 system was believed to give the new pro-military party an edge in the following election. So the dual ballot system is a comeback to 2014 pre-coupe elections. In general the dual ballot system favors military opposition parties. There was a possibility that the pro-military part of the committee would not accept a return to the dual ballot system pushed by the opposition coalition. However, the are 3-4 other ballot amendments debated by the committee in conjunction with the dual ballot system not mentioned in the article that could in theory shift favorability to the pro-militarily coalition despite the dual ballot system issue. For example, whether candidates and their party should have the same number on the ballot or different numbers. A majority committee voted for different numbers which would seem to favor the pro-military coalition. So taken as a whole and without further amendments, it seems to me the new balloting system represents a compromise between the pro-military and opposition coalitions. That is a win for the Thai electorate. Personally, these balloting issues are only nuances that ultimately have little effect on the election outcome. Case in point was the meteoric rise of the military opposition Future Forward Party and the disintegration of the pro-military Democrat party in the 2018 election.
  2. Going to the temple is not mandatory for Buddhists. The temple collapse might actually be karma - temple isn't required. To the extreme might be a sign of reaction to abbot morality or materiality. Setup an area at your home, open 24/7.
  3. More than 20,000 people from 52 countries have already volunteered to fight in Ukraine's foreign legion. March 2022 www.dailymail.co.uk The majority are European and North America, some 500 from Belarus (!) and some Japanese volunteers. Ref. www.dw.com I don't expect PM Prayut will encourage Thais to fight for Ukraine.
  4. As long as the virus continues to mutate with virulent results, the degree of protection provided by vaccines annual or semi-annual covid-19 boosters may very required. Case in point is the annual "flu" vaccination. Every flu season is different and so the annual vaccination may be altered to address any adverse effects of those mutations. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/keyfacts.htm
  5. Since the 2014 military coup, the Thai Treasury has been controlled by the pro-military coalition. The "public" is irrelevant on how the government budget is established. Note that with regard to the budget approval process, former coup leader and current PM Prayut and Cabinet submit annual government funding plans to the House. Currently, the pro-military coalition controls the House. Furthermore, the military appointed Senate vote must confirm any House approval on budgetary issues.
  6. "The government has indicated its intentions to position Thailand as a regional manufacturing base for electric vehicles (EVs)" A bit late and hyperbolic. https://reglobal.co/increasing-uptake-southeast-asia-on-the-verge-of-an-ev-surge/ To take advantage of its already existing automobile hub, Indonesia has chalked out plans to become a manufacturing hub of EVs by 2025. The country is aiming to export 200,000 electric cars by 2025 – which is nearly 20 per cent of the overall annual car exports of the country. Indonesia sold nearly 15,500 units of electric two-wheeler motorcycles and about 24 electric passenger vehicles in 2019 (as compared to only one unit sold in 2018). Malaysia recorded sales of 32 EVs in 2019, up from two in 2018. Singapore plans to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and have all vehicles run on cleaner energy by 2040. Vietnamese VinFast has also shared plans already to enter markets in North America and Europe, opening orders for its first two EVs in the first half of 2022. VinFast has begun delivering its first batch of e34’s EVs for customers in Vietnam before entering the US market. https://electrek.co/2021/12/28/vinfast-delivers-first-ever-vietnamese-evs-to-local-customers/ Then there's the "800 pound gorilla" in Asia-Pacific region. China exported half a million of EVs in 2021 throughout the world markets. https://techwireasia.com/2022/03/china-exported-half-a-million-of-evs-in-2021-the-highest-in-the-world/
  7. Pita doesn't have to be arrested to be removed as a candidate. The EC can disqualify him as a candidate, even reversing itself after the election having qualified him before the election. (ref. post-election removal of MP Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit) The Election Commission consists of seven commissioners appointed by the King upon the advice of the Senate. https://www.ect.go.th/ect_en/news_page.php?nid=1890 Guess who appointed the Senate members post-2014?
  8. China neutral? March 15, 2022: China has already decided provide Russia with economic and financial support and possibly sending mi,Italy supplies such as armed drones. The US expects it can change China's support. https://www.theguardian.com/world
  9. "Andrea Cavallaro, Ford Operations Director, International Market Group, said internal combustion engine vehicles will continue to exist for some time, citing the fact that EV technology and infrastructure have yet to be adopted in Southeast Asia and other major economies worldwide." BS - While Ford goes medieval with ICS in Thailand, it's going Star Wars in other major economies worldwide: https://www.mall-11.xyz/ProductDetail.aspx?iid=22469884&pr=398.88 https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/volkswagen-ford-deepen-electric-vehicle-cooperation-2022-03-14/ https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/18/ford-to-manufacture-two-evs-in-mexico/ https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2021/09/27/ford-motor-company-all-electric-vehicles/5884985001/ https://www.barrons.com/articles/ford-motor-stock-china-sales-evs-51642181272 Note that imported Chinese manufactured EVs (ie., Tesla, BYD, SAIC, NIO, XPeng, Geely) pay no duty fees into Thailand. Combined with Thailand's new auto subsidies and lower VAT, Ford's Thailand ICE plants and sales are at severe risk from EV imports. In fact just recently: https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/21/foxconn-says-thailand-ev-factory-will-begin-producing-50000-units-by-2023/
  10. Fuel isn't the only metric in comparing EV to ICE autos. EVs have less moving parts, no oil changes, sparkplug replacement, etc. That results in lower maintenance costs by 40-49% lower than for ICE models. Then there is the additional benefit that a fully charged EV can serve as an electric source for a home in the event of a grid failure.
  11. Loses control during dogfight maneuvers - pilot error. Likely a rate flight lost too much speed.
  12. Volvo parent Geely reveals $9,000 EV for China. China's $9,000 Electric Pivkup Truck is Coming to the US. Chinese EV maker XPeng model P5 sedan starts at less than $25,000. SFP (lifepo4-sulfur, iron, phosphate) EV auto batteries more environmentally friendly. Lithium-ion vs lead-acid batteries: higher charge rate, higher specific energy, better cold-temperature performance, lower self-charge rate.
  13. The Bank of Russia established on March 17, 2022 the exchange rates of foreign currencies to the ruble for accounting and customs payments. Foreign currency holders will have to decide whether they accept this pricing. Note that that Russian stock and derivatives markets are still closed and at the end of February 2022 the Russian bank more than doubled the key interest rate to 20% in an artificial boost of the ruble. But to borrow Russian rubles now is very risky.
  14. As of April 2019 the interest doubles Hopewell compensation to B25Bn. April 22, 2021 Ministry fails to halt B25.4 billion payment order to Hong Kong based firm linked to 1990 contract. www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/ Annual interest rate is 7.5% This does not include damages and court costs. 15. The name of the religion is the same but the religious leadership is not. March 13, 2022 A Russian Orthodox Church in Amsterdam unanimously announced that it is no longer possible for them to function within the Moscow patriarchate and provide a spiritually safe environment for its congregation. www.theguardian.com/world I expect a similar viewpoint in Ukraine towards the Russian Orthodox Church. March 12, 2022 In fact a split within the Orthodox Church in Ukraine is among the pretext cited by Russia for the invasion. The Patriarch of Russia Orthodox Christianity Kirill praised the invasion. www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/ Faiths can be shanghaied for political purposes where morality and even religious doctrine is subverted. Most notable in the US is the loyalty the Evangelists to POTUS D. Trump. March 2, 2022 The Kremlin's vision of Russia connects the state, military and the Russian Orthodox Church. www.theconversation.com/ The same might be said of Buddhism in Thailand.
  16. It's in the Constitution that received a majority approval from Thai voters in a referendum.
  17. The PM can unilaterally dissolve Parliament. But a simple majority of House MP's in a vote of no confidence can also dissolve Parliament. But given that Prayut's pro-military coalition has repeatedly votes successfully against a VNC, it would be up to Prayut to dissolve the House otherwise.
  18. House MP's can call for VNC. But a successful VNC requires a simple majority vote of the House MP's. But Prayut's pro-military coalition has repeatedly voted against no confidence.
  19. Putin will not help stranded Russian tourists as then it would be an admission that sanctions work and bad public optic for Putin.
  20. Another new potential problem for Thai tourism and international trade is that, according to a US official, Russia has asked China for military equipment to use in its invaion of Ukraine. There is also a concern of China offering Russia financial aid. https://www.timesofisrael.com/russia-asking-china-for-military-equipment-us-says-ahead-of-meeting/
  21. Syria and Belarus are joining Russia's invasion. More sanctions against those countries too? And impact Thailand further?
  22. Regardless of anyone's theory for the cause of the accident, is there a dashcam? These buses are operated by the State and as such, liability falls ultimately to the State. Lack of video cams would be irresponsible in terms of ensuring public safety and security. No mention of a bus dashcam in the article. Hopefully nearby drivers with recording of the bus crash can offer more perspective of the accident.
  23. According to 2021 Corruption Percrptipns Index, Ukraine is not one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Albeit it's corruption score is about the same for about 49 other countries out of a total 180 countties in the Index such as most of the former USSR countries ( incl. Russia), most of South & Central America and a smattering of African countries. But there are 42 countries with even lower scores (higher corruption) than Ukraine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index As far as 2 million THB not seen as being enough, expats on a non O-A retirement vise extension must transfer to Thailand a minimum of 780k THB annually using the income method, not uncommon for some to transfer much more beyond 1 million THB. So yes, 2 million THB is a pittance for Thailand, especially coming from a supposedly democratic nation that spends billions of baht for hi-tec military weapons against "shadow enemies" while maintaining a bloated military command.
