  1. if you or the missus speaks thai and you dare to really save there is another possibility

the road to katiem/JJ market has plenty of burmese laborers( some even speak english and you might find a foreman there too) you can get everyday just for a day and the price will be from 200/250 up depending on how cheap you want to be .of course you need a vehicle and get the materials but that is not difficult either.and you can just manage the project yourself.i built my own house and had to get involved more and more to maintain a certain standard-in the end it was just that -the contractor dropped off the workers everyday and i told them what i wanted them to do.of course you need to know something about building here.but it is not too hard telling others what to do.really,i'm not joking.

I would be interested in seeing a photo of your house

  2. Roughly what is the cost (can't seem to find it online) of the device and all accoutrements (if any)?

  3. Hi everyone!

Just found out about this thread, was abroad when RidersCorner came to visit.

To the concern about forest encroachment I can tell you, the land has been a rice paddy "forever", according to the locals, and got papers 50 years ago.

The forest is starting just behind the house, and it is regenerating since I put a stop to the locals cutting any tree they found to have some red ants or wasp nests they could get eggs out.

Houses where build with "second-hand" wood meaning buying old houses in the area and reusing the wood, I did all the building with the help of a couple of locals. (that's why it took so long and the restaurant is still not finished...)

Hope to have clarified the forest issue, for any more infos just ask!

in the web u find me at samoeng(dot)info

    Cheers

    Niko

Can you give a Google Map link and a phone to make reservations?

    Thanks

  4. I have 3bb (6mbps - but usually 4mbps - but it always works) at my house and also have Truemove H on my iPhone which can tether to computers as a backup... The new Truemove H (5-6 mbps -but I think my iPhone model is limited to 5.72mbps) is fast here in downtown CM but in other areas that might not be the case...

Also realize that ALL the cellular based systems have a fair use policy...

Also Also Has anyone heard of a person working on the internet being caught by immigration?... Just don't try singing in a bar :whistling:

  5. Given that they advertise H speed at 44mbps I was expecting to see my iPhone 4 top out at at its max of 7.2mbps (This is the iPhones 4 physical speed limit)... Nowhere have I seen that...

I'm intrigued by that comment. Is there also a limit on WiFi speeds on iPhone4? At home where I have a desktop computer, notebook computer and my iPhone4 all connected to the same WiFi router, my computers both get ~9Mbps on a speedtest.net test to the Bangkok server, but the iPhone4 tops out just around 5Mbps.

Scroll down to Model Comparison/Cellular Connectivity at wikipedia.org:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iphone

    Here is Truemove H faq:

    http://www.truemove.com/3g/en/faqs-1.html

I am wondering if I am limited in speed to the 5.76 Mbit/s HSUPA?

Also should one see a "H" instead of the "3G"?...

  6. My experience...

I live here in Chiang Mai, I had Truemove's postpaid Freesize for 599 baht and was averaging between 4-5mbps...

Two weeks ago I went into the Truemove store in Airport Plaza and asked to be converted to Truemove H. Was directed to the right side counter and filled out the one page MNP form... Very easy and also they wanted a copy of my passport - accepted my Thai drivers license... The lady gave me the new microsim (I have iPhone4) and said that in 4-7 days the old sim would stop working and then I could put in the new sim...

In exactly 7 days I got a text message saying the sim would change over the next day... Next day the old sim didn't work and I put in the new sim fine... The new network TRUE-H appeared with a 3G next to it (see screen shot below)

The only thing I initially had problem with was the tethering option had disappeared... But I also got a text referring me to their website to manually set up the APN http://www.truemove-h.com/helpsupport_apnsettings.aspx

Once I set this up and rebooted the tethering option reappeared...

Below is screen show from my house here in Chiang Mai (I live inside the Moat)

I have traveled around several areas since including Hua Hin & Suvarnabhumi Airport and I average between 5-6mbps... I have never got a reading above 6mbps...

Given that they advertise H speed at 44mbps I was expecting to see my iPhone 4 top out at at its max of 7.2mbps (This is the iPhones 4 physical speed limit)... Nowhere have I seen that...

But between 5-6 mbps on average isn't shabby!... In return I lost my Freesize plans SMS quota and 1/3 of my fair Use Quota (Truemove 3gb - Truemove H 2gb/month) Either of which is of little consequence to me.

I assume the speed will increase over time as the system is built out...

  7. Can an Usufruct be in two names jointly?...

Say there is a husband and wife both farrang can it be both names jointly so if one spouse dies can the survivor continue on with the Usufruct till his/her death?

I know a lease could extend the term for an additional 30 years - but you don't know which spouse will die first...

  8. Article 7 is good, practical advice from Sebastian.

You may be in 'the right' from a legal standpoint - but that counts for nothing if a hot-headed cousin living next door comes at you with a machete.

Also refer back to THE END OF A USUFRUCTCONTRACT...

"a usufruct can be created for... the LIFE of the usufructuary"

  9. Yea, last year's hit move "I Died of Prostate Cancer Because I Didn't Catch It In Time" won 3 Oscars!

    :lol::cheesy:

You make a good point. There are many 'silent' killers too, that if caught in time can be stopped.

And I can't think of anyone better than Dr Morgan to have this checked by

  10. http://www.healthcar...icalclinic.com/

Dr. Morgan comes highly recommended by many TV posters as a caring individual who speaks good English. I'm just about to make an appointment with her myself. I last went to the Special Medical Services Center (Suthep Road) where the cost for the most comprehensive list of tests was about 5000 baht. Dr. Morgan I guess is about the same. Dr. Greg ,the American doctor is not at Sripat at the moment ,so essential communication of the results could be problematic. At my last reckoning RAM was about three times the cost.Dr. Morgan happily replies to email questions and would give you a quote.

The thing I like about Dr. Morgan, is that when the blood work comes back, she explained in detail what the 'bad' numbers represented and the way forward to make them 'good' again. She also goes over anything that is borderline and gives advice on this. I've been to other places and e.g. if something was just under or over, they would mark it 'normal', whereas Dr. Morgan flags it for attention. I really can't say enough good things about her.

How much did Dr Morgan charge you for the tests and office visit?

  11. Just get a usufruct .( good for 30 years and no annual charges ) .In case things go bad and she starts moving in Family members ,keep yourself fit at the Gym every day ;-) .

I thounght a usufruct term was for the life of the Leasee?

But as already mention if you are married any future agreement can be voided by her within one year after divorce...

  12. re .. Interested in opinions and observations.

  13. I have a MacBook Pro with the Mac OS Version 10.6.8 installed. My question is, where can I get the Lion update here in BKK without having to pay buy credit card and download from the net? I don't use credit cards and was told by the iStudio at the Central Pinklao that was the only way to do it.

Surely there must be a place here that can download into my Mac?

Many vendors in Pantip have it in stock... Some even at a discount if you don't mind a cd instead of Apples USB fob B)
