  1. The OP indicated he was not interested in the bar scene. Doubt there will be a lot of Thai's chasing around after him on the golf course offering the services of a Thai lady.

You should really get out more.

That having been said he should be prepared to revise his budget a bit if he happens to find love...

  2. Ok, I'll bite, but I thought Google Maps needed to be online, and thus invalid to this forum thread?? Am I missing something?

For unlocked IPhones there is a workaround...

If you have iOS 4 you need version 1.3 of Maps Enhancer

You can find v1.3 at this Cydia source: http://cydia.myrepos....com/apps0rama/

  3. I am a student at AUA and would recommend it highly...

Right inside Moat, Cool old building, Been there for 25 years...

Just watch out for Kruu Oronut in Reading & Writing Level 1 - She is a task master!!! :(

And they do offer Visa's as my classmate has one from them

  4. I did make a post about living in Thailand with 7 million baht. Not close to 24 posts. I have since been to Thailand for a month and wondering if anybody was generating any income stream. I am just trying to dig into people's experience. Not all advice are sound but some are constructive and informative.

I mention the 24 total posts (On any matter) that you have made as a gauge of how long you have been posting on this forum and from that I was assuming your experience in Thailand... Sorry to say but your initial post sounds like a newbie post ;) All I was advising was take your time...

    That being said...

I have a condo here and now am planning a country house... (neither of which is income producing)

Investing here is fine but do it with thought and with money you can afford to walk away from...

    My 2 bahts worth

  5. Well said, Chiang Mai. People who make such blanket statements are just showing their ignorance.

I was replying back to an OP who has made 24 posts in this forum and gave no hint in his post that he had any experience in Thailand but does tell us he has 7 million baht burning a hole in his pocket...

I told the OP not to buy anything in the first year (Not to buy I Thailand)

Sent from the common sense brigade... :jap:

  6. Make it easy on yourself... Apply for a retirement visa in your home country. They will give you a O Visa good for 3 months... Find a nice hotel on Agoda and book for 2 weeks... Come here and go to a bank of your choosing and open up a Thai account... Transfer 1,000,000 Baht into it... (800,000 is what you will need to have in the account when you go to extand your visa - do not spend this until your visa has been extended) The other 200,000 is for to live on for 3 months and pay a deposit on a furnished condo/house which you should be able to find in the first 2 weeks (You can do a web search on a number of websites - but don't commit until you get here and see the place...

Once your visa has been extended you can spend down the 800,000 - Start with a budget of 65K/month - see if at works for you... Also realize that in the first few months thing may cost more as you will not know all the deals and non farrang prices available...

Live here a year and rent DO NOT BUY in the first year...

Find your niche and learn for yourself what it takes to live here...

  7. This is a Cydia app? Cost?

I bought Cartographer which was supposed to do the same thing and came highly recommended. Then I tried to use it and I couldn't figure out how to plan a trip on it, so I gave up. $3,99 wasted. What a piece of garbage. Very pretty though (maps look like a pirate treasure map). But functionality severely lacking.

I am sure there are others in the app store through? The feature of course is extremely useful...

This app (it's not really an app but an additional setting) is simple will stop Google Maps from automatically dumping the cache when you quit the app.

You just have to remember to view the map at least once before you leave a 3G area (like the night before a trip)

Add this Source to Cydia: http://cydia.myrepos....com/apps0rama/

    And it's free!

  8. I like to take road trips out side the city...

On thing I find is that once you get out of the 3G capable area the my IPhone's Google Map slows to a crawl...

It can't get to the maps fast enough or not at all so it becomes worthless...

Then I found Maps Enhancer 1.3... Cydia Source: http://cydia.myrepospace.com/apps0rama/

    http://www.ambot-ah.com/2010/04/06/viewing-google-maps-while-offline-on-your-iphone-or-ipod-touch/

This add a setting that stops the phone from dumping the map cache...

Just remember that you must open up maps (Zoom In) and go to the places you want to visit before you leave the 3G area - view your road trip and let the phone download the maps - then when you actually go on your trip the maps will be on your phone and not need to access the internet

  9. First I would survey near your house and find where a local shop that services AC are - Look at the brands they service - This way you have a convenient service man picked out for future issues (After warranty)... Then write down on a piece of paper the brand and six btu's you need. Then I would go to the usual suspects (HomePro, Siam TV and surprisingly Robinson's has good prices) - Get quotes from all and ask if any discounts... Don't let them upsale you on any of that Health Inverter stuff!...

I would also try to get similar btu sizes if possibe just so you have as many the same make and model to reduce complexity in service in the future..

I did the above and as I said Robinson's came in the best price - I choose a basic Samsung 18K btu's and they threw in the nice plastic pipe covers (Which are extra cost) for free...

The service guys showed up and installed it perfectly (I think all sellers just call in the order to the same installers)

  10. I have totally taken to the sprayer method!... Including a totally green post airdry after a good powerful spray

I actually like a powerful spray... With a little aim practice and muscle group training you can get a really achieve a deep clean technic... But do test an unfamiliar sprayer's power before going to it!...

Now when I find myself at a paper only option stall I never feel clean afterwords... More like smearing things around to me now... :ermm:

I have not gone totally native - And have yet to master the crouching ladle maneuver...

  11. Most at Cali WOW don't work up enough sweat to leave on the machines...

While I am here I DO have one vent... That is CELL PHONES IN THE GYM!!!!!

I think they should be banned!!! (My old gym in the US had a no phone policy...)

Here they sit on the machines and check their Facebook...

But I do love when the "Trainers" plop the ladies on that vibration "Exerecise" machine face down and spend the next 20 minutes checking their email HA!...

If I was shelling out 1K baht an hour for a "Trainer" he better not be on his cell!!!

  12. So for the Mae Jo event on the /9

Could anyone recommend a nice resturant with outdoor seating with a view of the event but well away from the actual event and crowds?

What is the event on the 9? Do you mean on the 5th?

And there is no place that fits your bill. You are either right there in the heart of it all, or you miss it.

    Sorry meant the 29th

I just thought a nice comfortable restaurant a mile or so from the crowd & traffic might be a better spot to watch the assent

  13. It's speculating about 'western food' shortages - esp. the mayo and mac & cheese - that is a bit over the top - IMHO.

Miracle Whip actually and they were joking.

Was joking about Miracle Whip - But now it has gone critical!...

KFC Zinger Sandwiches mot laao! :o

They say that all the time at Hangdong Big C KFC. If you say that can't be true, you will wait for them to cook new chicken for the sandwhiches. It's the lazy way to say finished. Finished at 12 Noon? The manager works wonders and miracles.

NO!... There are there are big red signs over the menu banner...

Apparently they have no more buns!

It's always the weak link in the chain
