Israel and Hamas fight house-to-house battles across Gaza
placnx replied to CharlieH's topic in The War in Israel
I heard that a lot more people are joining Jewish Voice for Peace, a major advocate for BDS. Maybe this time Germans will feel less guilty about the Holocaust when they can see Nakba 2 unfolding. -
Despite Washington’s confidence, US war with Iran would be disastrous

Your link is from October 11th. Opinions taken early on do not reflect what has happened in the two months of Israel's bombing, etc. Opinion in the US, particularly among younger people currently opposes the Israeli attacks on Gaza. Germany & UK still support Israel, for now. -

I am not referring the comments about "concentration camp" on this or any other thread on this forum, which contains a lot of intemporate and propagandistic comments. International bodies, etc, quoted on BBC have often referred to Gaza as an "open air prison", due to Israel's control or borders directly or indirectly. That has become obvious to the world lately when the meager aid through Rafah was delayed by Israeli inspections. UNGA is the world. -

How? Ar first individual countries will take action. The US will be the last to agree on collective action. It may take a few years, with the big assumption that Trump does not return to power. Why? Israel will refuse to remove settlers from the West Bank to permit a viable two-state solution. -
It is likely that sanctions are the only recourse to oblige Israel to live up to its international obligations. If Netanyahu et al continue on the present course for much longer, US and UK will find themselves isolated, and Germany will feel that it has been exploited to abet war crimes.

You evidently don't know about the attacks by drones on a refugee camp in the West Bank. Since when was that done before October 7th? This is only a more striking example of the IDF activities on the West Bank that go beyond the raids that have been going on since the far right took power. -
Iran says it helped broker release of Thais held in Gaza

I said: "When there is an enduring ceasefire, and IDF is not supervising visits from ICC investigators." A lot of people in the world are interested in knowing what really happened, and an IDF guided tour will not suffice. -
Actually, what the Embassy should do is explain whether certain US incomes such as Social Security or pensions are exempt due to tax treaty (or not) and whether the tax paid to Thailand can be a credit on US tax, even if one doesn't have any foreign income. The way this works in US treaties with other countries, one is allowed to reattribute US-based income as foreign income in an amount equivalent to the income declared in the foreign tax return. In addition ot IRS form 1116, I believe that another form has to be filled. If the Embassy has an IRS staffer, they should help US taxpayers here to know how to deal with this.

When we end up alienating the whole world over our unquestioning support of Israel and arrogant vetoes, let's hope that we find a way to be forgiven. -

West Bank is effectively a part of the current offensive. If all settlers in West Bank were banned, tax deductions for settlement support disallowed, those moves could have an impact. -

I try to see the bright side, how there could be a just and enduring peace.

Answers to your propaganda (hasbara): 1. Archives coming out reveal that the campaign to expel Palestinians was premeditated. BTW It began in 1947. Arabs mobilized in response. 2. How can Arabs dominate the General Assembly (GA)? Anyway, at the beginning of this conflict, GA adopted Resolution 194. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_General_Assembly_Resolution_194 There were many after that, but SC Resolution 242 is the most relevant to now: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council_Resolution_242 Readers - note the propagandistic whataboutism in this extended rant. 3. Many have declared Gaza to be an "open air prison". I have not seen the term "concentration camp" used. It's been reported that Israel controls food imports to restricy caloric intake: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/oct/17/israeli-military-calorie-limit-gaza There are ulterior motives for allowing around 1% of Gazans to work in Israel, such as recruiting informants. 4. Please show a link or reference for the statistics which you cite. Some seem possibly true. As for prisons (not "concentration camps"), hopefully starvation is not the norm. As for incidence of diabetes in Gaza, there is a study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7699327/ Unbalanced diet seems to be the problem: too much sugar. -

It's still early, but it seems likely that sooner or later some countries will consider sanctions as the only way to respond to such recalcitrance. -
The US may appoint itself after getting stonewalled by Netanyahu for too long. After that it will negociate with the other side with or without the government of Israel's cooperation. There is a limit to what the US government can tolerate, especially with elections coming up next year. Anyway, the current operation in Gaza is a Pandora's box, and the scenario I evoke is a possible outcome of Netanyahu's insubordination.

Perhaps you could spend more time finding out what's happening now. Biden is going to ban a few dozen settlers from the US. Pathetic. -

The original 1953 US involvement in reinstating the Shah and removing Mossadegh was incited by British intelligence because of the nationalization of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Persian_Oil_Company This link lacks detailed information on the incitement, since archives have only opened within the last 10 years. This is covered in the book "America's Great Game" by Hugh Wilford. Actually, Obama gave speeches about democracy in Istanbul and Cairo, and later in 2009 the were major demonstrations in the streets. Recently, the deaths of women in custody for not covering their hair has also caused major reaction all over Iran. These expressions have all eventually been suppressed. Iran is a really big country. Who would want to occupy it and bankrupt themselves in the process? Toppling the regime by military force could well fail, but have Israel overwhelmed by missiles in the process. If the US financial blockade were lifted, Iranians would undoubtedly prosper. -

"Much of the world and much of their neighborhood really really wants to wipe Israel off the map." You deny paranoia, but your own statement is paranoid. It was tragic for the kibbutzes, but Israel's treatment of the Palestinians for long years, now it's strategy to bring Saudi Arabia into its circle, has reduced the Palestinians to desperation. As the campaign against Palestinians continues in both Gaza and the West Bank, it increasingly seems that the goal is to empty historic Palestine of its people to realize the slogan "A land without people for a people without a land", which was the mythical propaganda starting in the 19th Century. -

It helps to understand the reasons historically why we have the Security Council permanent members that we do. Back then evidently the people who drafted the Charter were naive and anachronistic, not understanding the dynamics which could undermine their idealistic view of the functioning of a system to regulate international relations. -

Looking back to the Shah's reign, middle class people were not happy with SAVAK, the secret police, and many thought that Ayatollah Khomeini would be better. Iran had a parliament for a long time, but now the ultimate power resides with the religious elite. I agree that the country can culturally support a democracy, but imposition by external force is problematic. There too much chance for opportunists to come in on the back of occupation. -
