  1. The technical explanation of the treaty provided by USG/IRS states: "Article 20 deals with the taxation of private (i.e., non-government) pensions, annuities, social security, and similar benefits". https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-trty/thaitech.pdf
  2. Entries previously made did not show when logging on the next time. This happened to me both on my Windows desktop and on my iPad. After the filing was accepted, I called BOI, and they said that the missing entries were there even though they don't show on draft copies that I saved under the "check status" tab.
  3. I am a retired person, and I use the Thai-US DTA. "Article 20 covers four types of payments which share the trait that they are typically paid or received by individuals as “personal” items. Pensions, social security payments, annuities, alimony and child support payments paid to the resident of a contracting state shall be taxable only in the state where they arise." https://thailawforum.com/articles/taxleeds.html#50
  4. After submitting the LTRWP filing, I clicked on the button on the acceptance to see the filing. I was nearly blank. Then I looked at the "check status" tab. The submission was there as well as various saved drafts. On them there a lot of the entries and files had disappeared, so I tried calling the BOI, and for the first time someone answered. They looked at my submission online, and apparently the entries and files are there! I asked about file size. They said that 4.6 MB for the passport file is OK. The only issue is the photo where there is a 2 MB limit. I forgot to ask about the current income issue. What I did was to enter income for the last 365 days. Apparently, if they have a question, they send an email.
  5. I just tried to enter 1 January, but it's impossible. If choosing this year, it puts today's date as "start" as well as "end". So I will go back to previous plan.
  6. Thanks very much for your detailed response. 1) I have reduced file sizes to under 1 MB except for the passport, which is 4.6 MB. Even the earlier passport file at 17 MB seemed to have been accepted since it showed after uploading and logging on again. I can rescan the passport at 200 dpi (instead of current 300 dpi) to see whether I can stay under 2 MB. 2) I just used my iPad with an Apple pencil. It works perfectly. However, I could not figure out how to open pdfs. I could only open jpgs in the download file, so now I'm back on the Windows desktop. 3) Entries previously filled are not necessarily ones with attachments. It's my Thai address that disappeared (and other entries), but I did not enter a US address, since I don't live at my contact address there. Is putiing no foreign address a problem? 5) I will try entering current year from 1 January rather than the previous 365 days.
  7. Maybe it's best to confirm that you are not locked in to the insurance solution for the next 5 years.
  8. I have 5 questions about filling the application: I am trying to fill out the application online for "wealthy pensioner". To start, I scanned my passport in color at 600 dpi. This produced a 25mb file. I successfully uploaded it, and the registration completed. If in fact this big file will create a problem, I have rescanned at 300 dpi which produced a 4.9 mb file. 1) Can I & should I change to the smaller file? After filling out the form, I could not sign it. Maybe it has to be done with a mouse or Apple pencil. 2) Can someone confirm how they did it? So I clicked on "Save Draft". When I opened the application form again, a lot of entries were blank, and the uploaded files did not show, so I put them in again, but still did not sign. 3) Were the entries still there despite not showing, and uploaded files, too? After reading the new entries, I decided to redo the scans so as not to show my taxpayer number, since people commented that they balcked out the number and BOI did not object. 4) Will the uploaded files remain in their system if I remove & replace them? (Maybe someone has asked BOI this question). The current income item asked for the last 365 days of income. 5) Can I just give them 1 Septmber 2024 to 31 August 2025 instead of lopping off the first few days of September 2024 and adding on the first few days of September 2025?
  9. Following your suggestion, I searched for online software to redact pdf files. I got WPS Office, but when I tried to redact the US taxpayer number, it said that the file was protected, so I could only black over the number. Someone with editing software could remove the black and see the number. So I printed out the file and blacked it out with a marker pen, then rescanned it.
  10. Harvesting from prisoners is already happening.
  11. My university roommate majored in psychology, and almost 60 years ago his thesis proposed an interesting concept in management: That people are promoted in an organization until they reach a position where they underperform, at which point they are no longer promoted. So his idea was that they should be promoted anyway as in a higher position they might outperform! Following this line of thinking, perhaps Anutin as PM might perform better than he did in his previous job as Health Minister.
  12. I second your comments. Also, people should realize that Harvard, despite its huge endowment, does not have access to most of these funds because gifts to the endowment were given for specific purposes, while these days big endowment managers have been investing a significant share in illiquid assets such as private equity. Meanwhile some Zionist alumni are stopping their giving, or, in one case of a Penn alumnus, trying to take back a gift of $100 mn given a number of years ago!
  13. I seem to remember that in person reporting can be done up to 7 days after the due date.
  14. I looked at the website of the International Association of Genocide Scholars. To join, it's required to fill in a bio statement and indicate one's affiliation. So it seems that members need to have some qualifications to join.
  15. There is talk of a Uniting for Peace resolution in the General Assembly to send peacekeepers. Besides that, individual countries could institute sanctions against Israel, but the climate of fear of Trump's tariffs may be inhibiting action. Germany has stopped supplying weapons to Israel, and Norway has taken serious action. That's about it. By the time that the General Assembly convenes later this month, Gaza City may be severely damaged and many more people killed.
  16. Thaksin doesn't even rise to the level of Sheikha Hasina.
  17. We have to assume that with a new constitution the PP may win even bigger. Hopefully the Constutional Court's powers will be curtailed so as to limit its chances of interfering in the electoral results.
  18. The Wall Street Journal has pointed out that if the firing of Cook succeeds Trump will be able to appoint two Fed governors in addition to the two whom he appointed in his first term. The term of a governor is 14 years, and Cook was appointed in 2022, so an appointee would serve in place of Cook. Since there are 7 governors, four Trump proxies would be a majority. This would give him the power to control appointments of the presidents of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks. In rotation, 5 of them serve as voting members of the Federal Reserve Board to make interest rate decisions. The strategy of Trump's minions is to have him control interest rates, but in fact the market determines the rate for the 10-year bonds on which mortgage and other rates depend. The exception to this is when the Fed does extraordinary things such as quantitative easing, which will override normal market forces.
  19. It might be more productiove to invite a bona fide journalist from New York Times or Wall Street Journal.
  20. Fishing with no success is like attempted murder, still a crime.
  21. BBC has had reliable associates on the ground in Gaza to this day, after BBC had to withdraw their staff.
  22. BBC had to withdraw their team long before that documentary. It had become too dangerous for journalists.
  23. They will claim to be launching an investigation, and the last that we will hear of it. The sniper killing of celebrated Shireen Abu Akleh in 2003 is a case in point. First the IDF claimed that it was Palestinian fire, but they were caught out by Bellingcat and others. She was an American citizen to boot, and there's no sign that Biden et al did anything about it.
  24. In Israel, TV channels and most print media except Haaretz are for the war, even to the point of inciting ethnic cleansing, starvation and genocide. In the US the teerm genocide is avoided on TV, the passive voice is used to avoid mentioning Israel or IDF. The newspaper of record, the New York Times, is pretty much pro-Israel in spite of the obvious hypocrisy to its journalistic mission.
  25. Cats have feelings, so dying in a loving human's arms is a different feeling from being snatched from a pen of doomed cats to die by being eaten alive. What cat owner would go along with this? I do not speak for dog owners.
