  1. So now it is not even recommended to wear traditional Thai dress from the area? I thought Thailand was trying to promote the Thai culture which as far as I know the dress is an integral part of the culture.

problem is traditional dress has become a bikini with a number stuck on it and high heals, generally worn at night indoors. perhaps the new tourism minister can change it but i have my doubts.

  2. situation is that i have a one year old daughter and a 5 year old son. i want to do a a trip in october to cambodia and then a longer trip to new zealand over xmas. kids mum does not like to travel so wants to stay in thailand at her sisters with our daughter. i want to travel with out son. what documents do i need to travel with my son. i am assuming i need some sort of permission from his mum. is it a letter signed by a lawyer or something else?

  3. From another forum........

"My friend Brian phoned the kennel Europe 2 weeks ago. He asked if they took the cats there. The lady he was talking to said that she had a catteri. Brian drove to Springfeild Golf Club where the lady met him. When he came to kennlen showed the lady catteriet. The boxes were set against a wall. The cats were in the same room as the dogs ???????? Very frivolous. Beside the kennel Europe is Kennel Scandinavia. Brian ran in there and spoke with a Swedish man. He showed a wonderful catteri where Brian left their cats. Brian says that the lady at the kennel Europe lies about the kennel and cattery. Brian was very pleased with the Kennel Scandinavia and he takes his cats there again. Never again Kennel Europe says Brian."

he was running his western business beside a thai business? thats a dangerous thing to do especially if you are more successful.

  4. We had a similar descision to make several years ago. I decided that a private international school in Bangkok was good for up to age 11, but as my daughter wanted to eventually go to a UK university, we switched to UK private school when she was 11.

Still not certain if it was the right descision, as kids in UK schools seem to be more aggressive and mal-adjusted than kids in a Thai international school, but as so many ex-pat parents decide to shift their kids to a school back home around age 11 or 12, the high schools in Thailand tend to become more Thai and less international, for better or worse.

But if I was comparing State Schools in Thailand and UK, then I think UK may be a better bet, but post Brexit, who knows?

PS Why do questions like this always seem to be posted by 'friends' of the person having to make a tough descision? Are there no first person posters on TV?

interesting point about the international schools becoming more thai as foreign kids get sent home. i will move back home before my eldest turns 10.

a lot of people here post saying the advice is for their friends as some members rather than give advice or share their experiences just berate the person looking for advice. this has happened to me on several occasions.

  5. Is it not for the police to charge and the courts to examine the evidence and convict???

I would say their seems to be a lot of good reason to suspect her of this but probably more investigations are needed to collect evidence, she should be charged to stop her fleeing...

actually it is up to the cops do decide what case will be prosecuted. in many cases a fee is paid to the police to not send the case to the prosecutors or sent with a reduction in the crime. i have been through this process with work permit problems. odd that the courts would refuse a case. i suspect as thailand is now tier 2 with human trafficking the cops have been asked politely to drop that part to get it out of the spot light.

  6. last month i went out and bought a 400L tank (was the biggest that would fit through the bathroom door) this month it has rained almost every day and the local supply has been on more than 12 hours a day. going to take alot of rain to top off the dams in thailand however and i suspect we will be back to water every second day again in the dry season. i might put in another 400L tank if it does. is surprising to see how fast a family of 4 can go through 400L.

The minimum recommended allowance of water/person/day is 200litres and usage in Bangkok is 220 litres. No idea what it is where I am in Isaan but 200 litres was the amount recommended by the local water authority..

sounds about right. 400L gets us through a day if the water is off. 2 adults and 2 kids under 5. thats not running the washing machine, we need mains pressure to run that. staggering amount of water for 60 million people. when i left australia they were building coal fired desalinisation plants to keep up with demand. seemed to be a horrible wase of coal and energy.

when i first moved into my girls house i thought the bathroom was oversized but now if necessary we can daisy chain in four of these tanks. not sure it will get that bad to need that however.

  7. ok, someone must know what this whole asean thing is about. for years my mates have been going on about how thailand is going to be awash with english speaking bargirls and english teachers once asean boarders are opened. i havent seen that, infact as far as i can see nothing has changed. can someone enlighten me?

Sounds as if you have the wrong mates, since they talk a lot, but actually not have the slightest idea what Asean is about.

well we do talk alot, helps pass the time and they are far more entertaining than my thai bird. do you know what asean is all about?

Have you ever seen anything really change here? Lots of ideas, plans, wows, promises, crack downs etc.... Only thing is sure... After a few weeks, Its all Same, Same.

    I wonder why? :-)

thailand certainly is very efficient at keeping foreigners out. i havent seen a single english speaking philipino bargirl and i doubt there are any more philipino teaches here.

  9. The changes that came into force on 9 July 2012 stipulate that the British spouse has to earn an annual income of £18,600 (and show that he/she has been earning that amount for at least six months) in order to sponsor his/her non-EEA spouse for a visa. The foreign spouse’s income is not taken into account. The financial threshold increases if they have children also in need of sponsorship.

Out of interest (but only modest interest at present as I am happy in Isaan with my 6 yo being schooled in a paid for English programme* in a part public/part private junior school), does investment and pension income count as "earning" for UK visa/settlement purposes? For many purposes, particularly taxation "earned income" is a defined term that implies employment.

    * 50/50 English Thai and about ThB 50,000 pa with decent/experienced Philippino teachers. I was surprised to find that capability in a $hitkicker amphur town in rural Isaan

imagine how surprised i was when we found Marie catholic school in nang rong burri ram. 22000thb/year for half thai half foreign. extra 2000/year for afterschool classes. school starts 730am finishes 430pm.

  11. I think if he can afford to go back he should do it for his children's sake. They will get a better education and better chances in life than they will in Thailand. If and or when they come back after their schooldays they will be fluent in English and Thai, can actually think for themselves and will have a world view. Huge advantages.

think the only chance my kids have of learning thai is if they stay in thailand for the first part of their life. especially written thai. thai kids growing up in a western country will probably not have the motivation to speak or write thai. was planning on relocating back to nz next year but will give it a few more years to give the kids some thai experience. will make the move when my eldest is 10 so he gets a couple years at primary school to be ready for high school.

there is a general feeling by people here that kids should be moved immediately back to a western country but i believe rural thailand is a good place to start their education. gives the kids some balance and variety as well.

  12. so i am a similar position. 42 years old with rental properties in new zealand. two half thai kids 2 and 5 years old. i love pattaya after living there 10 years but have moved up to esan recently. was going to be a 1 year stay but we have found an excellent school near my girls house that is less than 1000usd per year for the English curriculum. i am now thinking i might stay on up here until the kids get a bit of a grasp on the thai language. is crazy cheap to live up here as well. will do high school for the kids back in nz. think this should be a good balance and they can go to university back there if thats what they want to do.

  13. saw a french guy in TOT one time going nuts about his internet. i could not really understand what he was saying so i doubt the poor girl behind the counter could understand either. her nervous smile seemed to be egging him on. he had a thai girl with him, should have left it up to her i suppose. i have to admit i got a bit hot under the collar about having to travel some distance to a visa run shop several times to pick up a refund on a visa run that got cancelled. sure they were hoping i was just going to give up and write it off.

  14. i have only had 3bb pocket wifi for a few days but i dont think i will bother with ADSL again.

    reasons being

easy to buy and set up. setting up the router on my last house was a real headache. one downside is i cant change the network name or password as far as i can see. not a big deal really.

portable. we can take it when we travel around. kids can even use it in the car on long trips.

low monthly charge if we are away and not using it.

    supports up to 10 connections.

just did a speed test 34mbsp down and 24mbps upload. not sure if this is good or not but seems to run fast enough for the 3 of us.

has a built in battery so even if the power goes off we can still use the net. the wifi range is stated as 30 to 100m and does my whole house.

yet to see how much we will end up paying per month but charges seem pretty reasonable when i checked them in the shop.

  15. Buy a pocket WiFi router from AIS/Telewiz and pay for it on a monthly contract package from the shop? They're very good I used to use one for backup, plus you can use them anywhere in Bangkok when out and about.

thats what i have a pocket 4G wifi router with 3bb. i am living in rural esan and both my son and i can stream youtube at the same time. i am really impressed. just pay at the end of the month on what eve we use.

Do they charge by Mb used and how much please

can probably find the charges on their website. steps up as you use more it costs more. 1000thb gets about 20GB. have had it less than a month so i have not made a payment yet. seemed pretty cheap, much cheaper than in new zealand anyway.
