  1. My point is that if the current requirements for METV exclude many. Yes a self funded retiree could visit for some time on succesive setv with extensions. There are many people that would like a base so to speak. I am doing exactly what earlier poster suggested. I travel in and out of los every few weeks. Bkk is great for flying to many countries and very cheap.

my point is .....who is the METV suited for. Not my backpacker sons spending next nine months in asia.

I can hardly come up with examples the metv caters for with its current requirements. Certainly not a chineese or russian tourist. Not the backpacker group i referred to. Not self funded people like myself. Not rich dudes working for themselves etc. So who exactly is metv for.

when a business provides a product it has a target market and alsi does market research on possible uptakes etc etc. Clearly the metv was plucked from thin air

The closer it gets to the 13th Nov. the more i see this as a white elephant, for many of the points you have mentioned above.

New visa has taken the double/triple entries off the table and, with the current requirements, has effectively reduced the target user to a very small group.

Even though it doesn't affect me, i am intrigued by the MFA's methodology in this matter.

The METV will achieve exactly what the Thai authorities wanted ie,

    1. Drastically reduce illegal working

    and

    2. Make to life more difficult for those who believe they have a "right" to live long term in Thailand using inappropriate visas.

There will be little or no effect on the number of genuine tourist arrivals.

  2. For our Swedish friends it does not mention retired.

    .

An employment certificate in English from an employer mentioning

the applicant's job position, salary, the

purpose of visiting Thailand, and the date when the applicant is expected to return to

work. For self-employed, please submit business license or business registration indicating the

applicant’s name. For a student, please submit an original certificate of student status

in English from the school, college, or university.

I guess individual liberties never really took hold in Europe (or thailand for that matter). But why would anyone beleive the Employer controls the lives of it's employees to such an extent?

These requirements have nothing to do with Europe, these are requirements set forth by someone in the Thai immigration department.

Most likely someone who doesn't or hasn't traveled overseas, but has sat down and come up with a list of requirements he/she thinks would be useful to know about the incoming visitors to Thailand.

Maybe even done by a committee....

Clearly you have never applied for a UK visitor visa!

  3. Ok, THANKS to you ALL for some great comments. However, I have NO idea where I can find colloidal silver in Chiang Mai, I've been looking for ten years, nada. Many do insist it is very effective. Someone clue me in if you can. Quadriderm and Travogen I will keep an eye out for now, but clue me in if you know where I can find it in Chiang Mai. Meanwhile, the jock itch problem is mild, while the tinea versicolor is totally wiped. Another service I might add is that I've had serious problems with customs snatching my vitamins these last two years, first Puritans (who now refuses to ship to Thailand) and now Swanson's. These are crucial to my well being, but now I find that all are available in Thailand direclty here: http://swansonthailand.net/kirkland-vitamins/

If anyone knows where I can find Quadriderm and/or Travogen in CM, let me know, but Dog claims that it's easy to find, so I'll be looking. I'm a bit out of circulation here in Sanpatong, but get to CM about once a week for church.

Before you or anyone else searches for or uses "colloidal silver" open the link and read ...............

  4. Min of Public Health reports 102 dengue fever-related deaths this year

    dg.jpg

BANGKOK, 11 November 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health has expressed concern over the spread of dengue fever, but affirmed that they have not discovered any new strains of the disease in Thailand.

Dr. Opart Karnkawinpong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, revealed that the department’s Bureau of Epidemiology has recorded more than 100,000 dengue fever patients and a total of 102 dengue-related deaths from January 1 to November 2.

Phetchaburi province reportedly had the most dengue fever patients, followed by Rayong, Uthai Thani, and Pranchinburi provinces. Dr. Opart expressed concern for Nakhon Ratchasima province, Chiang Mai province, and Bangkok administrative area, which are expected to see a rising number of patients.

However, the department reported that no new strains have been found, and the four existing strains continue to be transmitted via mosquitoes.

Isn't there a vaccination for Dengue fever?

Not as yet, although there is developmental work being undertake.

  5. Best you come to an arrangement with the hospital. Attempting to "dispute" the cost will achieve nothing.

13,000 is not a lot of money and if you have health insurance there should be no difficulty in settling the hospital invoice.

Treatment in a private hospital would have cost considerably more.

It is unlikely that the hospital has, as yet, made a compliant which would result in your detention at the border.

    NB

Just as a matter of interest what was the cost of the "EKG ultrasound in one and a cat-scan" and do you have a receipt for the cash paid?

  6. Apparently it's unbelievably horrible. I spoke to a bloke who was poleaxed for weeks and then knackered after that. I'd no idea it was this common.

Yes! I have also spoken to the survivors, people struck down with this horrible disease, and sadly had the poor ones been wealthy they might also very well be alive today.

I had Dengue fever about 20 years ago. The symptoms are back/neck ache and little bloody spots on the skin, as well as high fever and headache at certain times of the day. You certainly know about it, but I would not call it unbelievably horrible.

I was on an expatriate insurance, so money was not an object. Bumrungrad hospital told me it would take around 7-10 days to get a definitive test result, but most likely the disease will be on the way out after that time. They said it was almost certainly dengue fever. I declined the test, because there is no real point in it.

There is no cure however much money you have, but it is very unlikely to be fatal.

Mine was diagnosed in 1 day, also I want to comment that if you get the complex versions it can be unbelievably horrible, it was in my case

Suspect that was a clinical diagnosis supported by the "classic dengue" results of routine blood testing.

Viral identification is rarely undertaken and usually only for epidemiological purposes.

  7. "Nobody wants to face the worry and stigma of being sick with gonorrhoea or another sexually transmitted infection."

Once again Thailand's approach is closing the barn door after the cows have escaped. They are talking about diagnosing and treating and NOTHING about prevention. For that would mean that they would have to actually talk about sex.

It has been proven that the best way to address this issue is for parents to discuss with their children, and for the school system to teach about responsible sex and STDs, and how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STDs through use of safe sexual practices. However, in the west there still remains a strong core of "moralists" who believes that it is better to ignore the issue of sex, and adolescents will never have sex, get pregnant, and STDs will not be a problem. This appears to be the most common approach in Thailand, although there have been successes in sexual education in small segments of Thai society. Until there is a major cultural change nationally, this problem in not going away.

    Cheap Thai bashing remark.

Best you take the message to the USA and other Western countries and bash them for "failure"

    • Time to spend some of the useless military budget on protecting the citizens of Thailand, spend it on health, try and eradicate this desease.

Perhaps you should tell them how to eradicate this disease.

    It affects many countries .........

    http://phil.cdc.gov/PHIL_Images/08051999/00004/dengue_phf/sld013.htm

Perhaps , after you have informed the Thai Authorities how this disease can be eradicated, you will share your expertise and knowledge with the experts at the World Health Organisation and also those at the Center for Disease Control would love to know how Dengue can be eradicated

  8. OP,

I had an ED Visa that expired 30 July this year, and when i tried to leave on that same day at a land

border crossing, they wouldn't allow me to, due to not having the ED Visa officially cancelled.

They advised me to only leave by air at Swampy.

Being that your planning to leave on the 1st Dec and your ED Visa expires on the 15th Dec you may

have a similar problem, it may be best to have your ED Visa cancelled first before leaving.

    Visas are never cancelled !

Are you really talking about an "extension of stay " ?

  9. Thank you ubonjoe!

You will not show the 20k Baht to get the visa. I understand. But I heard about people who have to show the 20K Baht when they want to get back into Thailand on a Tourist Visa. Asked by the Thai Officer. Same with the Air plane Ticket? Thats why I'm asking, if they asked me if I have to show them cash or it is ok to show them a document? Sorry Im a little bit confused about that smile.png

At some land borders you may be asked to demonstrate possession of Cash. A document will not be accepted.

Possession of cash is only rarely needed at airports.

If in possession of a visa it is highly unlikely that an "Air Ticket" will be asked for.

  10. I too question the LP, usually done only when intracranial bleeding or infection are suspected to have caused the hydrocephalus neither of which seems likely in your case (the imaging would have ruled out a bleed, and you have no symptoms suggestive of infection).

Also question the MRA of the chest.

You need to be careful you are not being subject to excessive and unnecessary tests. Known to happen.

For the chest 2 Singaporean Neurologists suggested the TIAs could be caused by damaged or hardened Arteries. My old man had his first attack on Angina at 40 years old. I Have the resources to be to able to undertake most tests they feel are adequate. I don't sit there worrying thinking ohhhh I spent 2 Grand , I'm relieved I've not got a tumor or cancer and I've not just seen my wife and kids for the last time, If I'm going to "Spend" Money I'd rather do it taking care of myself than some stupid 20 K car or ridiculous over priced ex-council house. It seems the accumulation of money for the kids "Futures" is all what life is about , how about taking care of yourself and "Spending"" dough on that so you are around when they have their kids. I will not agree to the suggestion I am being Naïve. I suppose I could have spent the money on 2 weeks in Magaluff. If you are British as I am , I think we take free Government treatment for granted as we do with all government "Services"

No one is suggesting that you should not expend resource on securing health care.

What is being suggested is that you ensure you are informed adequately about the need and reasons for, any investigation and treatment.

If you are happy with the explanations provided and understand what you are consenting to then fine if not then seeking a second opinion would be wise

Over-investigation / treatment of medical conditions is a well researched fact which affects some health care systems more than others.

  11. "Being "retired" is a legitimate occupation and if the other requirements can be met I foresee no problems for retirees wishing to enjoy a long holiday."

Maybe it is, but how am I to get a letter from my employer giving my expected date of my return to work? No letter, no visa

If you are retired I presume you can evidence that fact.

    Speak to the Embassy.

Questions about employment are commonly found on application forms but a retired person can still access whatever service is being sought.

  12. Thanks for the replies. So no matter what, my husband and kids will have to leave Thailand to change their status? My employer said I can change my status at Chaengwattana but not my family. Is the only way to do it to go outside of Thailand and get them to get an extension of stay with my work documents and change their tourist visa to a non O? Our new single entry tourist visas are good until January 9, 2016 and we can get another 30 day extension at Chaengwattana if needed. Is that not enough time for them to change our documents in the country?

As already stated Immigration will not do visa status changes for dependents.

You could ask the Immigration people at Chaengwattana but be prepared for disappointment.

  13. VERSION 2 OF OP. THIS WILL MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY FOR SURE.

I've had continuous retirement extensions for the last six years so I'd rather not let my current one lapse. But it may be very difficult for me to be in Thailand when it's up for renewal in April 2016. However I may be in Thailand two or three months before the renewal date.

I know you can renew a retirement extension up to 30 days before the renewal date. But what if you want to do it 60 days - or even 90 days - before the renewal date?

Does anyone have experience of whether Chonburi Immigration (at Jomtien) will allow this?

The money in the bank requirement isn't an issue. I keep 800,000 baht in a Thai bank all year round.

    Thanks for your help.

Mods, I'll post this in the Pattaya forum but if you think it would be better in the visa forum, then please move it. Thanks.

It is extremely unlikely that you will be able to renew the extension so far in advance but you should check directly with immigration.

  14. The lesser spotted digital nomad will be disappearing from Thailand soon and will be relocating to a more welcoming safe haven in future or taking advantage of multiple SETV's and VOA's to truly annoy one and all 555

Many will not qualify for a VOA which costs 1000 Bht and only provides for a 15 day stay.

Repeated back to back single entry tourist visas will be restricted and currently are unavailable from many Embassy's/Consulates.

Seems the "lesser spotted digital nomad" will soon be extinct!

  15. The confusion between visas and extensions of stay DOES lead many TV posters to make mistaken assumptions. It's better to insist on correct use of the terminology to save the occasional member from grief.

Those who point out the importance of using correct terminology are often accused of being pedants.

If someone insists that they have a "visa" then do not argue or attempt to persuade them otherwise.

They will learn the difference between "visas" and "extensions" when they try to enter the country with an "extension" and discover they only receive a 30 day visa exempt entry.

  16. I have lived in Thailand, more than 10 years. This year was by far the hottest year for me. I seldom use aircon, (it almost killed me once - I got Legionnaire's Disease from a faulty unit in Mexico in 1990). I live near the sea in jomtien Beach, so there is usually a breeze to keep it cooler. the breeze and a fan nearby is usually all I need, but this year, .. I had to trun it on almost every night to cool off before going to sleep. I can not afford to run it all the time like some people do

The OP should sign up with this gentleman who has all the answers !smile.png
