  1. My wife was also denied some years back. My step daughter then about age 7 had also applied but was asked the question 'Is this your mother or your sister?' the daughter replied 'sister'. Unfortunately it is not uncommon here for one woman to call another woman her sister. At a briefing given about three years ago by the people at ACS we were told that due to the number of applicants, agents only had 3-5 minutes per applicant to make their decision and that there was no time to review supporting documents.
  2. 'famously bloated in numbers ' and yet in all too many cases ineffective. It's known as living beyond your means. Seemingly poorly paid and equipped for the job, it's no wonder there is corruption, brown envelopes and other resourceful ways to raise income.
  3. Can't remember which one/ones but some programs allowing people to enter Thailand as a tourist have been suspended until further notice. Those whose Thai Pass had already been approved were being allowed to enter but no more passes could be issued. Why would you want to come at this time with the Omicron variant infecting so many. Think twice about delaying your trip. It is what it is!
  4. What could you possibly have expected. Many months have gone by with restricted places to buy/consume alcohol. All was relaxed for the holiday season so it was off to the 7/11's and more. Only motorized, properly equipped and patrolling police that stop the erratic driving (not just alcohol/drug related) will ever solve this problem. Seems all to often that offenders who are caught get little more than a slap on the wrist for their behavior. Bigger fines, jail time and maybe even confiscation of vehicles might get their attention. Seems drugs and alcohol are ingrained in the Thai culture.
  5. The same for me. I have a great Thai family, am well accepted and treated. I do joyfully pay the very few times we go out to eat but more often than not, mom tries to slip me a little under the table that I of course refuse. Yes, the language is a slight problem but we seem to make the best of it. Grandad in his late 80's and very forgetful continues to try his Thai on me but to no avail. Just bought the step daughter a new Honda City hatchback and mom wanted to contribute 200K that I also refused.
  6. Do not forget, you do not have to wait till the last minute. 30 days in advance is normal and give you a little leeway in how to sort it out. Does the office have a Christmas fund you contribute to? The other choice would be as advised, pay a fine or whatever but not a direct 'stipend' to the person assisting you.
  7. Don't forget the possible implications of insurance requirements for the retirement extension if the original VISA was O-A.
  8. I think the area you are looking for in Bangkok is known as the Golden Mountain. Never been there but I understand it is the place to buy quality wood and woodworking equipment.
  9. Have 2 Chevrolet pickups. I take them to the now Ford dealership that will continue to service the Chevrolets for years to come. Even the same staff for the most part.
  10. Check out the Lotus in Kilosip. Guess the National Lottery and Temple Fair games of chance are not gambling????
  11. For Moderna my wife and I recently went to Bang Sue Station in Bangkok. Basically saw an ad that said Moderna and Biontec would be available I believe from 16 Nov to 7 Dec. No further details were given. On the chance we could get Modera my wife and I travelled there from Rayong. We were registered, shot (free), waited 30 minute observation period and were on our way back to Rayong in less than one hour. Underground parking at the station. Vaccine process was extremely well organized. 2nd shot scheduled at Bang Sue Station on 29 Dec. We had waited over 6 months at the private hospital we use and was never able to get a confirmation when Moderna was to be available.
  12. Keep advertising to places you 'know' will be open and they will almost surely be closed by the time you get here. Little has survived and with Omicron anticipated to spread mid January you may be buying the spirits at 7/11's.
  13. 27 years 11 months USAF. 24 of those years I worked in a precision measurement equipment laboratory (PMEL). Basically instrument repair and calibration of any measurement device used by any of the military services and a few contractors in our geographic area. Equipment ranged from voltmeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, pressure/vacuum gages, radiation measuring devices, optical measurement instruments from transits to theodolites, various instruments used in physical measurements and even calibration of night vision equipment. Too much more to list. Second career I worked for 19 years for the Forney Corp. Building, installing and training customers on air pollution monitoring system (CEMS) used in power plants, refineries, wood pulping plants and just about anywhere else the EPA required monitoring of their emissions. Started on a work bench with a box of parts that I would turn into a gas (SO2, CO2, NOx, CO or other) monitoring analyzer. Ran the in-house calibration lab for a while then went into field service where I did many CEMS installations around the world. Once in field service I worked from my home, going to the company one day a year for my annual review. Our sampling system was installed sometimes 400-600 feet up on a smoke stack. A 2-3 man Alimak elevator that ran on a track up the stack wall gave us the access to the work area. For smaller stacks we did a manual climb but that climb was limited to 200 feet. Unless I had a trainee along I was generally alone on the job. It was rare that I spent more than a week on each job site unless multiple systems were to be installed on the same trip. At home I did what I wanted when waiting for another job (usually did not have to wait long). At home I was on salary, on the road I was paid hourly from when I left my house until my return. Of course the actual pay was for travel time house to destination, typically 8 hours a day on site plus overtime when I or the customer felt it was needed and for then travel time back home. For the most part, 2-3 weeks a month, Sunday afternoon or Monday morning I was at the airport going somewhere. I retired at 67 but within 2 weeks I was asked to do some more field work as a contractor which I did for two more years. I loved both careers. The experience gained in the USAF made me a perfect fit in the second career. And, yes even at 81 today I miss every bit of it.
  14. Trailing stops can be good or bad. Often there are temporary downward spikes possibly lasting only minutes that could trigger a sale only to be followed by a quick reversal. You must set your stops to account for this possibility taking into account typical price variations for that particular stock.
  15. If the government is so concerned about gambling, why is there a 'legal' lottery. Many Thais are eager to buy their tickets every week when it is the last thing they can afford to be spending what little money they may have gambling on the lottery. They get their so called 'lucky' numbers from anything that makes the news and has numbers mentioned or seen in photos. It is rare that anyone 'hits' the big one in this lottery. They make a big deal out of winning 1000 or 2000 baht when over past weeks and months they have spent 20,000 baht on lottery tickets that were not winners. If a casino is eventually allowed here, entry should only be permitted to those with a foreign passport. In Las Vegas, free drinks are repeatedly offered to the players to help loosen their minds about how much money is flowing out of their hands. Remember, when you see the pictures of the big beautiful casinos in Las Vegas much of the construction costs were born both by the losers and also by investors hoping enough money would be lost to increase the value of their investments, If the alcohol flows freely, where are these players going to go when their money is gone? To the highways to maim or kill more people?
  16. Before doing the name change, think very hard about the possible changes to other official documents that have your original name on them. Driving license for one, credit cards, school/university records and so much more. Went through something similar here with my wife and step daughter. As it turned out, in many places such as schools, prior businesses worked at, driving license and more, their names had been spelled phonetically as opposed to being their legal names as they appeared on their birth certificates. This could be especially important if there is any chance of doing any international travel where names on the various documents needed must match exactly.
  17. OK, 100,000 in November. Possibly but? Another 300,000 just chomping at the bit for the day they will get to Thailand. By my numbers, in the 31 days left this year or almost 9,700 arrivals per day. Good luck with that!
  18. My daughter had a Thai 'English' teacher a couple of years ago. I did not see her homework one night but was appalled when I did see it after the teacher had graded it. There were 10 scrambled sentences the students were to rearrange in correct English order. Of the 10, 9 were marked as correct. When in fact, only two were correct. Some Thai English teachers do not need to be teaching English.
  19. A Power of Attorney expire on the day the person giving the POA dies. Useless in this case. However, it might prove beneficial if you are hospitalized.
  20. A Power of Attorney expires the date the person giving it dies. So of little use in this case. However, if hospitalized she should be able to withdraw funds from the account. Possibly with some limits imposed.
  21. Wife just returned. Required AKT before boarding ferry, another when arriving hotel/resort. No comments for bars.
  22. Unfortunately still waiting for the vaccine my Cardiovascular doctor wants me to have, 1st choice Modera, 2nd BionTech. I have pre existing cardiovascular issues (artificial arteries and narrowed arteries) and he feels the MRNA vaccines are less likely to cause problems.
  23. Or any other beach. Large gatherings, no masks and the alcohol flowing. All nationalities but majority Thai.
  24. Two hospitals I have used in Bangkok are Mission on Phitsonulok (sp?) Road and BNH Bangkok Nursing Home on Convent Rd. I had surgery there and recommend it. They do have a spine center on the second floor.
