The province of Chiang Rai was hit by two earthquakes of 1.4 magnitude each within a span of an hour. There were no immediate reports of any tremors after the quakes. The first 1.4 magnitude earthquake took place at 1.59am today, August 6, according to the Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Meteorological Department. The epicenter was located in the Pong Phrae subdistrict, Mae Lao district, approximately 4 kilometers beneath the earth's surface. Initial reports did not indicate any tremors. The second earthquake, also tracked at a magnitude of 1.4, occurred at 2.36am. Its epicenter was in the Saai Khao subdistrict, Phan district, merely 1 kilometer below the surface. This location is a bit southeast from where the first quake originated. There were also no immediate reports of tremors from this quake. Earthquakes are not unusual for Chiang Rai province, which is situated in northern Thailand. The relatively weak magnitudes of these recent quakes suggest they were minor. Even though these earthquakes occurred closely in time and location, there were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries. Local government officials alongside the Earthquake Surveillance Division are closely monitoring the situation. While the region has faced more significant seismic events in the past, these recent quakes are a reminder of the area's geological instability. People living in Chiang Rai province are being encouraged to remain vigilant, but not to panic, as these quakes were of a low magnitude. It is always recommended to take precautions in such scenarios. Local government officials are making sure that all required protocols are ready in case of any aftershocks or future earthquakes. Residents felt a minor shake, but it wasn't cause for concern. They praised the authorities for their swift response and regular updates. The occurrence of these earthquakes hasn't raised significant worries, but they do underscore the need for earthquake readiness in the region. Buildings in areas prone to earthquakes are commonly built to withstand such minor shakes, ensuring the safety of inhabitants. A shocking case of road rage happened at a traffic junction in San Sai, Chiang Mai, where a knife-wielding man threatened another driver. The incident happened late on Saturday, August 3, and gained a lot of attention after it was posted on social media. Beat, the 26-year-old driver who posted the video, shared the events that led to the alarming encounter. He was on his way home from a friend’s place when he noticed a pickup truck pass him and then move into his lane. Beat honked his horn to alert the driver of his presence, which provoked an angry reaction. The pickup driver responded by honking back, shouting insults and asking Beat to stop his car. When Beat stopped, he was confronted by the older man, who appeared drunk, and was waving a long knife. The man accused Beat of driving slowly in the right lane. Even after Beat explained he wasn't blocking traffic, the older man kept challenging him. To avoid escalating the situation, Beat returned to his car. Even though the man followed him, Beat managed to leave by making a U-turn. Beat shared his story on his personal Facebook page as a warning to other drivers. His post attracted a lot of attention, with other people sharing similar experiences with the same man. One commented that they had also been threatened in the same place by the man but had not confronted him because they had a child in the car. After the strong reaction to his post, Beat reported the case to the San Sai Police Station. The police have identified the aggressive driver as a 56-year-old from Phan district, Chiang Rai, using the vehicle’s license plate. Beat said he just wanted to warn others about the danger. "It's not safe to have someone like that on the road, especially if they're carrying a weapon," he added. Police are now looking into the incident, and the knife-wielding driver may face charges. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of road rage and the importance of staying calm even in tense situations. The local community is urged to report similar experiences to ensure that the roads are safe for everyone. A neighbourhood in Lat Phrao district, Bangkok, is living in distress as one household has been relentlessly throwing stones at other houses in the area. Despite numerous complaints and attempts to resolve the situation, the issue persists. Tanongsak, a local living in the Prasert-Manukit 27 area, Soi 226, reported that his house has been a daily target of stone attacks for over a year. Initially, he attributed the noise to debris hitting the roof. But in April, a leak prompted him to call a repairman, who found a bunch of stones and some metal nuts on the roof. Speaking to his neighbours, Tanongsak realized they were also being targeted. He noted that a house behind his had a pile of stones similar to those found on his roof. The household head of the suspected perpetrating family claimed innocence, stating that their house had also been under stone attack. Tanongsak stated that the stone-throwing usually happened around 5 am and 7 pm. On May 12, he reported the issue to the Khok Kram Police Station, but without any tangible evidence like CCTV footage or eyewitness accounts, the police were unable to act. To collect evidence, Tanongsak and his neighbours installed CCTV cameras around their homes. The cameras were deliberately placed to monitor the activities of the suspected house, despite their initial objections. CCTV footage recorded on August 3 showed the suspected individual coming out to smoke and then throwing a stone at Tanongsak’s house at around 7.42 pm. This video became the much-needed evidence of continuous harassment. Having lived there peacefully for over 20 years, Tanongsak expressed his shock, especially since the suspected house had been around for less than a decade. Neighbours describe the suspect as a large man in his forties who frequently hangs around suspiciously. They suspect that his parents might not be aware of his actions, as they haven't participated in any attempts to resolve the issue. It's also suspected that the man may have mental health issues, based on his erratic behaviour, including a disturbing incident when he exposed himself to a CCTV camera. Tanongsak and the neighbours suggest that if the man is indeed ill, his parents should seek help for him to prevent the situation from escalating further. Ekaphop Luangprasert, Minister of Interior's advisor and founder of the Saimai Must Survive Facebook page, has committed to coordinate with the superintendent of Khok Kram Police Station to hasten the resolution of the case. “I will visit the area with the police to negotiate with the household responsible for the stone-throwing today. If this behaviour continues, it could result in serious injuries, or even death," he warned. Health Advisory: Thai Milk Tea May Lead to Kidney Stones File photo for reference only The Thai Department of Health has issued a health advisory to fans of Thai milk tea, warning them about the risk of kidney stone development due to high quantities of sugar, calcium, and compounds in tea leaves. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334812-health-advisory-thai-milk-tea-may-lead-to-kidney-stones/

The Thai Department of Health has issued a health advisory to fans of Thai milk tea, warning them about the risk of kidney stone development due to high quantities of sugar, calcium, and compounds in tea leaves. In a Facebook post, the Health Department cautioned daily consumers of milk tea about potential health hazards linked to their preferred drink. It mentioned that consistent intake of Thai milk tea may result in kidney stone formation. When urine minerals crystallize, they form kidney stones. These can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a ping-pong ball. These stones can block the urinary tract and can cause severe pain and potentially even lead to kidney failure, said a Health Department representative. Thai milk tea, often linked to weight gain, also carries a hidden risk - kidney stones. The goal of the message was to raise awareness about how the well-liked cold milk tea could trigger serious health complications. Several components in Thai milk tea can fast-track the development of kidney stones. For example, fructose, a type of sugar present in milk tea, is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, burdening the kidneys and increasing the risk of stone formation. Moreover, some milk teas contain high calcium levels due to their milk content. The kidneys excrete excess calcium, which can solidify, creating stones. Tea leaves also contain oxalate, another contributing component for stone formation. Oxalate can combine with calcium to form calcium oxalate stones, a common type of kidney stone. To lower the risk, the Department of Health suggests multiple measures for milk tea enthusiasts. They recommend decreasing sugar intake by choosing less sweet or sugar-free alternatives and drinking plenty of water can dilute urine and diminish mineral crystallization. Switching to low-fat milk, skimmed milk, or soy milk can also reduce calcium intake. Consuming potassium-rich fruits and vegetables, like bananas and tomatoes, can further lower the probability of stone formation. The Thailand Sporting Trade Association expects a surge in sports enthusiasm and the subsequent sales of sports equipment following Team Thailand's performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Kitti Charoenpornpanichkul, the association's president, stated that sports events featuring Thai medal winners generally garnered significant public attention. This popularity encourages fans to participate in these sports, leading to an increase in the sales of sports equipment. A good example of this phenomenon happened during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where a gold medal win in taekwondo by Panipak Wongpattanakit and a bronze medal by Sudaporn Seesondee in women’s lightweight boxing saw a significant rise in interest in these sports, especially amongst young people. Kitti also noted that, while the ongoing Olympics introduces an element of uncertainty in predicting which sports will become popular, sports merchandise like apparel and footwear are currently in high demand. Thailand team is assured of winning medals at the Paris Olympics. Kunlavut Vitidsarn made history being the first Thai men's singles player to reach the badminton finals. Meanwhile, Thai boxer, Janjaem Suwannapheng, has secured at least a bronze medal and is scheduled to go up against Algeria's Imane Khelif in the semi-finals. Thailand is represented at the Paris Olympics by 51 athletes participating in 17 different sports including boxing, weightlifting, taekwondo, athletics, shooting, and women's volleyball. Kongsak Yodmanee, the Sports Authority of Thailand's Governor, states their main concern is not winning medals. Instead, they focus on athletes striving to break records and perform better. According to different sports associations, the sports where Thai participants have the highest chances of bagging medals include taekwondo, badminton, weight lifting, golf, and boxing. The sports equipment market in Thailand is projected to grow by 10% from 2023 to a value of 33 billion baht by the end of the year. This growth is credited to health-conscious consumers and the state's digital handout scheme. A woman from Thailand signed up for a 10,000 baht digital wallet on the Tang Rat app, instead she was notified of an unpaid traffic fine, stirring concerns about data privacy. This incident has alarmed the public and sparked debates over the security of personal details being given and linked to different databases during app registration. The woman divulged her ordeal online, sharing that after signing up to receive the 10,000 baht digital wallet, she was alerted to an unpaid traffic fine. She posted a screenshot of the notification and condemned the app's handling of her information. She disclosed that her father intended to settle the fine based on the app alert. The peculiar incident exhibits potential risks and unexpected repercussions linked with sharing personal information online. It has urged many individuals to reconsider the way they disclose their details and the trust they place in digital platforms. Despite the outcry, there has been no official response on the matter or any clarification regarding the data management and protection strategies in the Tang Rat app. The situation has ignited wider discussions about transparency and responsibility of digital services in handling user data. The incident raises significant questions not only about the Tang Rat app but also about the practice of data privacy and protection across Thailand. Users are advocating for more stringent rules to ensure their data is not misused or linked without their approval. In the meantime, authorities are urging individuals who have signed up or are thinking of registering for the digital wallet to remain vigilant and knowledgeable about how their data is used. This serves as a reminder of the importance of data privacy and highlights the potential risks linked to digital platforms. A Thai man was arrested after a violent altercation over an inheritance dispute resulted in one death and one injury. The incident occurred yesterday, August 5, near a temple in Tha Tako, Nakhon Sawan province. Police, led by Phitson Phasuk, arrived at the scene to find a tragic aftermath. A 68 year old man named Nikom lay dead beside his house, with a knife lodged in his chest. His wife, 60 year old Khemthip, was found injured with stab wounds on both her arms. Rescue personnel promptly transported her to the hospital for treatment. The assailant, 53 year old Narongsak, was apprehended at the crime scene. Initial reports indicate that Narongsak suffers from a psychiatric condition. He was taken to the police station for further questioning. The body of Nikom was examined by a medical examiner and later sent to Sawanpracharak Hospital for a detailed autopsy. Investigations revealed that the dispute began when Narongsak and his sister, Khemthip, engaged in a heated argument. Narongsak, who harboured fears about being deprived of his share of the family inheritance, often quarrelled with his sister over this issue. On this fateful day, the argument escalated, leading Narongsak to attack Khemthip with a knife, causing her injuries. Hearing her cries for help, her husband Nikom rushed to her aid. However, Narongsak turned the knife on him, stabbing him in the chest, and causing him to collapse. Narongsak then retrieved a baton and brutally struck Nikom multiple times, resulting in his death. Narongsak was detained for questioning to determine the exact motivations behind his violent actions. Police continue their investigation to gather more details about the incident, reported KhaoSod. A heated road rage encounter occurred at a traffic junction in San Sai district, Chiang Mai, where a man wielding a knife confronted another driver after a horn was honked at him. The incident, which took place at 11.25pm on Saturday, August 3, sparked widespread attention after being shared on social media. Beat, the 26 year old driver and owner of the viral clip, recounted the events leading up to the confrontation. He was returning home from a friend’s garage, driving along the Chiang Mai-Doi Saket route. As he approached the second traffic light at the Sam Yak San Sai market junction, he noticed a pickup truck overtaking him from the left and then swerving into his lane. To signal his presence, Beat honked his horn once. This seemingly innocuous act triggered an aggressive response from the pickup truck driver, who honked back, shouted insults, and challenged Beat to pull over. Upon stopping to address the situation, Beat was met by the older man emerging from his vehicle brandishing a long knife. The man, appearing intoxicated, angrily accused Beat of driving slowly in the right lane. Beat explained that he had just exited the traffic light junction and was not hogging the lane. The older man, however, continued to provoke. “Do you want to fight?” Opting for caution, Beat decided to avoid further escalation and returned to his car. Despite the older man’s pursuit, the two eventually parted ways when Beat made a U-turn. Facebook warning Beat later posted about the incident on his personal Facebook page to warn other road users. The post garnered significant attention, with many commenting on similar experiences with the same individual. One commenter mentioned being threatened similarly at the same location but refrained from confronting the man due to having a child in the car. Following the overwhelming response to his post, Beat reported the incident to the San Sai Police Station. Police officers identified the aggressive driver as a 56 year old man from Phan district, Chiang Rai, based on the vehicle’s registration number. “I just wanted to warn others about this dangerous situation. It’s not safe to have someone like that on the road, especially when they’re armed.” The police are now investigating the matter, with potential charges pending against the knife-wielding driver. This incident highlights the dangers of road rage and the importance of staying calm in volatile situations. The local community is urged to report similar encounters to ensure that roads remain safe for everyone, reported KhaoSod. Police arrested a Thai man for tricking young girls into producing pornography and selling the explicit content online, the youngest being 12 years old. A monk and a government official were found to be regular customers of the suspect. The Royal Thai Police (RTP) and Chiang Mai Provincial Police held a press conference yesterday, August 5, to report the successful arrest of 20 year old university student, Paramate Manikaew, who produced and sold child pornography online. Paramate was arrested at his home in the Mae Ta district of the northern province of Lamphun on June 12. His arrest followed the discovery of explicit videos he sold on a Telegram account, @aiestickv2. Each customer had to pay Paramate a membership fee of 120 baht to access his account and the pornographic content. The pornography on his account featured 12 victims aged between 12 and 22 years old. Police have identified only six of them and will provide further care, both physically and mentally, to all the victims. Paramate confessed to his criminal act and explained that he used dating apps and his attractive appearance to lure victims. After talking to each victim for a while, Paramate would invite them to his home. Paramate usually invited victims under the guise of modelling, joining a singing audition, or playing an online game. He would then coerce them into sexual activities and secretly record videos of the victims. Paramate sometimes tricked victims into sharing explicit pictures and videos with him, which he then sold. Officers further investigated Paramate’s customers from over 100 Telegram accounts that followed his account. Police arrested two of them, a monk and a government official, and will continue to arrest more relevant individuals. Officers did not reveal the details of the legal charges and punishment against Paramate. However, following previous cases, Paramate is likely to be charged under Section 287/1 of the Criminal Law: possession and distribution of child pornography. The penalty is imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of up to 140,000 baht, or both. Thai food stall owner shocked by 50 million baht electricity bill Photo via ThaiRath An electricity bill of 50 million baht shocked a Thai food stall owner in the central province of Chachoengsao. An electricity bill of 50 million baht shocked a Thai food stall owner in the central province of Chachoengsao. Locals in the area suspect an electricity scam. The stall owner, Sombat, told Kom Chad Luek yesterday, August 5, that he found the electricity bill in the mailbox outside his home, which also serves as a food stall. This was despite having already paid this month’s bill of approximately 1,000 baht. Sombat explained that he does not have a smartphone or mobile banking app, so he went to a grocery shop for help with the payment. The grocery shop owner was shocked upon seeing the amount of the bill. The electricity fee shown on the app was 50,000,069.48 baht. Both Sombat and the shop owner checked the bill and noticed it looked slightly different from previous bills. The bill was horizontal instead of vertical, but the other information seemed legitimate, including Sombat’s name, address, and electricity fee. It also stated that Sombat had missed a payment, which he denied. Sombat told the media that the shop owner and other locals believed the bill was counterfeit, sent by a scam gang. They urged Sombat to ignore the bill and share the story as a warning. As of now, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), responsible for electricity distribution and service in the province, has not yet addressed the issue. The same scam was reported in March this year, with many Thai victims taking to social media to warn others. One woman revealed she unwittingly paid the fake bill. Another victim disclosed that she paid the fake bill before all her savings were transferred to the scammers. Each victim urged people to check the colour and pattern of electricity bills before making payments, noting that the fees on fake bills are usually higher than usual. Bitter pill: Gay man accused of poisoning friend for insurance cash Photo via Channel 8 A gay Thai man in the central province of Lopburi has been accused of poisoning a female friend with cyanide and staging a motorcycle accident to claim an insurance payout of 1.5 million baht. A gay Thai man in the central province of Lopburi has been accused of poisoning a female friend with cyanide and staging a motorcycle accident to claim an insurance payout of 1.5 million baht. The victim, a 25 year old Thai woman, Chonlada “Tong” Kongdam, was admitted to King Narai Hospital in the central province of Lopburi at midnight on February 2 earlier this year after she crashed her motorcycle into a roadside forest on Nikhom-Ban Dong Noi Road. Tong suffered only minor injuries, including a wound near her right eye and scratches on her face. However, her condition unexpectedly worsened, leading to her death in the early hours of February 3. The medical team suspected foul play, as the injuries from the accident were not serious. An autopsy revealed cyanide in Tong’s blood system and stomach. Channel 8 investigated the case and discovered that Tong’s motorcycle accident occurred a day after she signed an insurance document. Tong had a young son but was divorced. However, the beneficiary of the insurance was not Tong’s son or other family members but her gay friend, Por. In the insurance document, Por was identified as Tong’s boyfriend. According to Channel 8, Por appeared to be Tong’s best friend and was present at the accident scene, the hospital, and Tong’s funeral. Channel 8 also found a conversation between Tong and another friend named Fern, revealing that Por was her friend, not her boyfriend. Por wanted to have a child but was unable to, due to being a gay man, so Por planned to adopt Tong’s son. Tong also told Fern that Por took excellent care of her and her son. Nevertheless, the close relationship between Tong and Por made Por the main suspect in the woman’s death. Family opposes investigation A temple staff member and a makeup artist who worked on Tong’s funeral told Channel 8 that Por and another woman, who appeared boyish, asked them to work quickly to prepare Tong for the coffin. Typically, Thai funerals last at least three days before cremation but Tong’s was completed in just one day. The makeup artist also revealed that Tong’s body had darkened, despite her having had fair skin while alive. The artist suspected poisoning, as Tong’s body displayed similar signs to those reported in previous poisoning news cases. This suspicion was later confirmed. Channel 8 reported that Tong’s family members refused to be interviewed and insisted they did not suspect foul play in her death. They wanted to drop the investigation and wanted to know who shared the details of Tong’s death with the media. The media team explained that they attempted to contact Por for an interview but were unsuccessful. Por’s neighbours told the media that he rarely returned home after Tong’s death. Even though Tong’s family did not want to pursue further investigation into her death, the well-known Thai lawyer, Nitikorn “James” Kaewto, urged the police to continue their investigation, as the suspicious death of a resident is considered a criminal offence in Thailand. A fire broke out at a flower and wreath shop in Bangkok, spreading to two adjacent units and injuring one person. Initially appearing manageable, the blaze escalated. The Rama Radio Centre received reports of a fire at 11.09pm yesterday, August 5, at a residential building opposite Sukhumvit Hospital on Sukhumvit Road, Phra Khanong Nuea subdistrict, Watthana district. The Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department quickly dispatched personnel and fire trucks to the scene. The incident occurred at a three-storey commercial building operating as a flower and wreath shop. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke emanating from the first floor. Initial efforts to extinguish the fire with water seemed successful, but flames later spread to the third floor’s roof area. This required an urgent escalation in firefighting efforts. “The firefighters initially thought they had the situation under control but the fire spread to the third floor, making it more challenging.” After more than 45 minutes of battling the blaze, the fire was finally contained. The fire affected two adjacent units but there were no reported casualties inside the building. One man was injured, suffering from electric shock, and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. “The injured man was quickly taken to the hospital after being shocked by electricity. Fortunately, no one else was harmed.” The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with local officials planning a thorough inspection of the site. The fire department emphasised the importance of adhering to safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Regular checks on electrical systems and fire safety equipment can be crucial in mitigating such risks, reported KhaoSod.
