The elderly woman who hurled verbal abuse at then Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, during his visit to Ban Pong district in Ratchaburi in March this year, was sentenced to six months and 10 days in jail and fined 1,000 baht today (Tuesday), without suspension, by the Ratchaburi District Court. In imposing the sentence on the defendant, popularly known in the district as “Pa Na Ban Pong”, the court ruled that she had encroached on the security zone maintained around the prime minister and his entourage. Police had asked the defendant to leave, but she resisted, said the court, adding that she did not repent for her actions but threatened to sue the officials who were performing their duty at the scene in a manner indicating her disrespect for the law. Government considers evacuation options for Thais in Israel The Thai government is considering other options for the evacuation of Thais from Israel, in addition to flying them back in an Airbus-340 and five C-130 military transport planes of the Royal Thai Air Force, which have not been allowed to land in Israel. The Thai government is considering other options for the evacuation of Thais from Israel, in addition to flying them back in an Airbus-340 and five C-130 military transport planes of the Royal Thai Air Force, which have not been allowed to land in Israel. An informed government source said that the Airbus-340 can carry only about 140 passengers and the flying time from Israel to Bangkok is about 10 hours. The problem is, however, where the plane will land in Israel. According to the Thai Ministry of Defence, since Israel is selective in allowing military planes to land in the country, the other options are Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Egypt and Jordan, in the case that military planes are used for the evacuation as originally planned. In which case, Thais who want to return home would have to be evacuated by other means of transport to one of these countries, and then board the planes back home, or by chartering a commercial plane which is still permitted to land in Tel Aviv, said the source. The annual rice harvest has proven to be a golden opportunity for the Thai community in Nakhon Phanom in northeastern Thailand. This is especially true for a group of people who are making a substantial income by producing and selling traditional sticky rice known as Khao Mao. This business generates several million baht every year. One such group is led by Sunat, who lives in Ban Phorong in the Fung Daeng district of Nakhon Phanom. Using traditional knowledge and methods, they transform harvested rice into Khao Mao during the rice harvest season. The finished product can sell for 120-150 baht per kilogramme, generating more than 1 million baht a month. This has encouraged local farmers to switch to growing and processing Khao Mao, thus adding value to their crops and creating a full cycle of income and employment opportunities. The rice used to make Khao Mao is typically sticky rice varieties KD10 and KD12, which take about three to four months to grow and sell for around 15-20 baht per kilogramme before processing. The processed rice is then packaged in vacuum-sealed packs and sold online across the country and abroad. It can be stored for a long time, eaten fresh, or used to make a variety of sweet dishes. A Thai woman met a tragic end as she fell from the fifth floor of her condominium in Chon Buri province. The Thai woman had tried to access her room by climbing onto the roof after accidentally locking herself out. A Thai man named Nut called for help from officers at Laem Chabang Police Station and Vibharam Hospital Rescue Team when his girlfriend, 23 year old Sa, suffered serious injuries after plummeting from the fifth floor of the condo. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Sa lying on the ground in a car park area, along with a damaged motorcycle and a balcony railing. Sa was unconscious, with blood seeping from her ears. The Thai woman was immediately rushed to Vibharam Laem Chabang Hospital but despite all efforts, Sa tragically passed away at the hospital. Sa’s boyfriend, Nut, revealed that he and Sa arrived at their room on the fifth floor and realised that they had forgotten the key. Nut decided to go seek out condo staff to get a spare key, leaving Sa to wait outside the room. In an attempt to quicken things up, the Thai woman climbed through the window, walked on the canopy of the window and tried to step out onto the balcony of her room. Unfortunately, the balcony railing was loose and Sa fell to the ground in the car park. A Thai delivery rider vanished after collecting eight iPhones, valued at over 100,000 baht, causing the client, Kittiphong Loeslaew, to voice his frustrations online. The delivery service is expected to compensate him for the loss. The online community advised Kittiphong to file a formal complaint against the delivery fraud, as the rider and vehicle registration details were available. They also recommended customers request a photo of the delivery rider, unmasked and with the goods, prior to accepting the delivery. If discrepancies are found between the account and the delivery person, they suggest cancelling the delivery immediately to avoid losing goods, time, and peace of mind. Kittiphong shared his bitter experience on Facebook. He believed that the company should reimburse him for his losses. “iPhone 8… eight devices. They collected them and then just disappeared. As the conflict in Israel escalates, Thai labourers in the region are facing increased worries about their safety. Despite this, many are determined to remain and continue working. The most recent violence between Israel and the alleged Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas has resulted in several thousand rockets being fired into Israel, leading to numerous fatalities. Among the dead are 12 Thai workers, as previously reported. Sombat Traisakdi, Deputy Governor of Chaiyaphum province, today revealed that in response to the crisis, the province has mobilised efforts to assist the local workers in Israel. There are 772 Thai labourers from Chaiyaphum currently working legally in Israel, made up of 742 men and 30 women, and an unspecified number working illegally. The provincial authorities are hastening their efforts to identify the exact number of workers from each district who are currently in Israel, to extend necessary aid. The Deputy Governor further stated that the highest number of workers from Chaiyaphum are from Ban Thaen district with 144 people, followed by Phu Khiao with 133, Kaeng Khro with 110, Mueang district with 110, and Nong Bua Daeng with 68. The rest are spread out across other districts. Journalists on the ground were able to interview relatives of Thai labourers in Israel. Some families have been able to maintain contact with their loved ones, while others have unfortunately lost communication. There are plans to upgrade Phuket’s Chalong Pier, making it the island’s fourth “smart” pier, alongside Ao Po, to the north, Panwa Pier, on the east coast, and Rassada Pier in Phuket Town. At the time it was opened, Ao Po became Thailand’s first smart pier. The Phuket regional marine office has confirmed that the privately-run Chalong Pier will become the fourth “smart” pier in the province, helping to improve visitor experiences. Digital solutions offered at smart piers aim to improve tourism service standards and boost tourist confidence. Officer director Nachapong Pranit says marine authorities will work with relevant agencies on the project, including the Digital Economy Promotion Agency. The cost of the upgrade project is expected to be around 60 million baht. He adds that his office will also cooperate with the operators of piers run by state agencies and other privately-run piers in order to improve services and safety. With Khao Lak the chosen location for a new airport to serve Phuket and other neighbouring provinces, attention is turning to road safety in the coastal town. Thai PBS World has a detailed report examining the issue and the reasons behind the high number of incidents each year. The new airport, called the Andaman International Airport for now, will be located to the east of Kok Kloi town, just 10-15 minutes north of Phuket. The new Thai PM has visited Phuket twice over the past month to endorse the major infrastructure project in Phang Nga. By the end of 2023, Khao Lak will have welcomed some 2 million tourists, generating some 10 billion baht in tourism revenue.
