A 61 year old volunteer elephant handler, known for his fearlessness around elephants, mysteriously vanished and was later discovered dead after being trampled by a wild elephant in the heart of a forest in Buriram Province. The grim discovery was made today by Chakkraphan Sukterm, Deputy Inspector (Investigator) of Non Din Daeng Police Station. The deceased, named Thuep (surname withheld), was a volunteer elephant handler in his village. Preliminary investigations reveal that he left home on a motorcycle to search for forest goods in the large Dong forest on the morning of October 4 and then went missing. The village headman and villagers set out to look for him, suspecting he might have lost his way in the forest. Later, someone found his motorcycle parked at the Chao Pa Base in the large Dong Yai forest area on the Buriram Province side before initiating a nearby search. Phichit Police, apprehended a 25 year old drug smuggler after he was found hiding in a marshland, having fled from authorities in northern Thailand. The drug smuggler, Natthanon, was discovered in a shivering state due to being submerged in marsh water for two days, enduring rain and cold without food. The arrest followed a significant drug seizure on October 4, in which officers confiscated 6,720,000 methamphetamine pills from a pickup truck at a traffic light intersection in Phichit province. The initial drug bust occurred during the night, with the narcotics discovered within an Isuzu pickup truck bearing the registration number 9536. Following the seizure, the suspect managed to evade capture, opting to hide within the marshland of Phichit province. This prompted a manhunt involving over 100 officers and rescue workers, which spanned two days and nights. Natthanon was eventually discovered today, around 9am, by a resident who had ventured into the marshland for fishing. On inspection, officers ascertained that the man was the same individual who had previously evaded capture during the methamphetamine seizure operation. If the past Governor doesn’t vote in your favour, just try the same requests with the new Governor. A group of beach vendors, calling for a designated area at Surin Beach, has submitted a letter to Phuket’s new governor, Sophon Suwannarat. The Phuket Express reports that 40 vendors from Surin Beach submitted their petition at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday, October 5. Sophon met with the group to take delivery of the letter, which outlines how local beach vendors have been plying their wares at Surin Beach for over 20 years. Occasionally, Chergntalay officials would collect fees from the vendors (we bet they do). Entertainment venue operators in Pattaya are generally pleased with the Prime Minister’s plan to extend the closing hours to 1 AM to boost the economy in tourist hotspot areas, which will likely include Pattaya. The Minister of the Interior Anutin Charnvirakul recently urged relevant officials to identify suitable areas for the extension of closing hours for entertainment venues to 1 AM in general, in response to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s directive aimed at boosting the economy. TPN notes that some areas in entertainment zones already have later closing times but this proposal would allow venues outside of these zones, like in East Pattaya or Jomtien, to legally stay open until 1 AM. During a routine patrol in Bangkok, the vigilant Sai Mai police force yesterday stumbled upon a disturbing discovery that led to the apprehension of a 38 year old man, who goes by the name Thanachai, or Noy. The illicit item in question was an illegal firearm, specifically a modified Thai-made BB gun, accompanied by a cache of four .22 bullets. The police were executing their customary patrols when their attention was drawn to Thanachai, who was navigating his motorbike along the thoroughfare of Watcharapol Road in the Tha Raeng district of Bang Khen, Bangkok. Sensing something amiss in his demeanour, the officers decided to conduct a thorough search, revealing the concealed contraband in the process. Thanachai readily admitted ownership of the illegal firearm, disclosing that he had acquired it from an acquaintance in a different province, parting with 4,000 baht in exchange. He claimed that he had retained the weapon solely for self-defence purposes. A deeper dive into Thanachai’s background unearthed a troubling history marred by prior involvement in drug-related offences. Alarmingly, he had been released from prison only about a year ago. A taxi driver seized an opportunity on a forgotten phone from his passenger and transferred almost a million baht to his own bank account. He was later arrested in Samut Songkhram. On October 5th, 2023, a Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) unit captured a suspect identified only as Mr. Saichon on an arrest warrant from the Bangkok South Criminal Court. Mr. Saichon was arrested on a roadside in Mueang, Samut Songkhram, and charged with offenses involving stolen electronic cards, burglary at night, and receiving stolen property. The taxi driver, Mr. Saichon, picked up a forgotten phone from an unidentified passenger but did not return it to the owner. Instead, he transferred the victim’s money, more than 800,000 baht, to his own bank accounts, as the victim’s bank account apps were apparently unlocked. Mr. Saichon later withdrew cash from ATMs in the Bangkok area. A 70 year old Thai billionaire accused his freelance prostitute girlfriend of 18 years of fraud and stealing from him after his wealth dwindled from billions to just under 10 million baht. The accusation by the man alleges that his 45 year old female partner tricked him into selling his luxury car and property. The Thai billionaire reported the case to the police, hoping to reclaim his assets and stating that he was not afraid of any potential criticism. The man, who first met the woman through a mutual friend, was aware of her work as a freelance prostitute. Initially impressed, he asked her to cease her profession and began to provide for her. The Thai billionaire bought her a brand-new red BMW and gave her a monthly allowance of 50,000 to 100,000 baht. Throughout their relationship, they never visited her home, instead, they met at malls or hotels. He also purchased an Audi PT Sport and a Mercedes-Benz for the woman and her father, respectively. Three months into their relationship, the woman claimed her father was sick and needed around 300,000 baht for surgery. The man provided the money for the operation and continued to buy her expensive goods and brand-name items. An internal feud within the ruling Pheu Thai Party is causing ripples in Thailand’s political circles, with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin calling for dialogue to resolve the conflict. The dispute involves long-standing party member Chalerm Ubumrung and the party’s executives, including the influential Thaksin Shinawatra, a respected figure within the party and the former prime minister, currently residing in the Police General Hospital. The internal feud escalated on Wednesday when Chalerm publicly announced his decision to sever ties with Thaksin, a decision he claimed to be irreversible. This surprising move came after Chalerm learnt from a news report that Thaksin did not want him or his son, former Pheu Thai MP Wan Ubumrung, to hold Cabinet portfolios due to their “troublesome” nature. Chalerm, a seasoned political figure and former close aide of the former PM, even challenged Thaksin during a Wednesday interview to officially expel him from the party if he deemed it necessary. “Given what I have just said, I think it’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my life…From now on, there’s nothing left to say.” By Mitch Connor Caption: Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Full story: The Thaiger 2023-10-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The Royal Thai Police have launched a fast-track programme, Quick Win, focusing on five key areas to transform the police force into a more efficient and trusted organisation. The spokesman for the National Police Office, Aachayan Kritong, revealed the initiative today. Aachayan explained that the National Police Chief, Torsak Sukwimon, recently briefed the entire force via video conference on the new direction for the police force, aligned with the government’s policies. The vision for the force is to be a trusted, globally standardised crime-fighting and law-enforcing organisation. The Quick Win strategy focuses on five areas for rapid and tangible improvement under the concept of Police’s Home, which includes personnel, systems, welfare, unity, justice, communication channels within the organisation, and creating a good image of the police force that the public can trust. Specific initiatives under the Quick Win strategy include the Return of Time to Police, which aims to reduce the workload of investigative officers and unnecessary paperwork within one month and to cut down meeting times, to allow police officers to devote more time to public service. In addition, the Return of Police to the Public initiative will cancel orders for police officers to assist in administrative matters, focusing their duties back on the police station.
