  1. The Move Forward Party has been on the defensive ever since its shock election victory in May. The party has taken what many observers describe as “political missteps” that may have cost it the prime minister’s seat and a chance to lead the new coalition government. Instead, it now sits on the other side of the House as the largest opposition party. Pita Limjaroenrat, who led Move Forward to electoral victory as its only PM candidate, failed to secure majority support in Parliament for the top job. The PM’s seat fell instead to Move Forward’s former ally, Pheu Thai, which displayed ruthless efficiency in the political games that followed the election. 2. Thailand remembers one of its gloomiest days “October 6” is the dark fallout of “October 14”. What happened exactly 47 years ago was considered the blackest chapter of the modern political history of the “Land of Smiles”. It shows that dangerous extremism can exist wherever it likes on the national realm and can turn unspeakably violent and cruel. It’s both a lesson that needs to be learned and a historical period that shall never repeat itself. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1308505-thailand-remembers-one-of-its-gloomiest-days/
  3. “October 6” is the dark fallout of “October 14”. Whenever serious political conflicts rock Thailand, the first thing peace lovers say is “There will be another October 6 if we are not careful.” Such is the deep-rooted notoriety of the day, which came just three years after a democratic euphoria that was October 14. There were times when speaking about October 6 had to be in the form of whispers. There were times when China and Russia were darlings of Thailand’s political activists, who regarded the United States as an “evil empire.” Talking about “before” and “after” of October 6 or the circumstances leading to and following the event remain prejudiced until today, depending on whose opinions are being sought. Thais and the rest of the world only know for a fact that there was a violent crackdown and lynching, and most of the people who died were university student protesters encamped inside the Thammasat campus. 9. A rare blue snake, also known as a “Tiffany Blue” snake, was discovered by a 62 year old Thai woman in her backyard in Photharam, causing “hiss-teria” among her local community. The sighting, which has a one-in-a-million chance of occurring, coincidentally happened on a lottery day, leading locals to believe it to be a sign of good luck. The Thai woman who discovered the snake, Gosorn, explained that she initially spotted the snake on Sunday, October 1, nestled against her garden wall. Despite its unusual blue colour, she and her sister didn’t think much of it. However, when morning came and she found the snake still there, she noticed the numbers ‘0’ and ‘2’ and decided to place a bet on the lottery, which she won. She believes that the snake, which she has never encountered in her 62 years of life, is a harbinger of good fortune. The snake was later caught by her 27 year old grandson, Adisak, who decided to keep it as a pet at his home in Thammasen, Photharam. Adisak, also known as Frank, houses the snake in a plastic bottle with air holes and a small branch for the snake to coil around. He feeds it insects and notes that the snake measures approximately 1.5 centimetres in width and 31 centimetres in length. When lit by a flashlight, the snake exhibits an even more stunning appearance. Initially, Adisak didn’t realise the rarity of his find. He assumed it was just a common snake and didn’t take much interest in it until his girlfriend posted a picture of it in a snake group. 13. The tragic loss of two young lives to influenza, compounded by encephalitis, has cast a sobering light on the importance of vaccination and vigilant healthcare practices. A prominent medical source issued a fervent plea for influenza vaccinations, especially as we enter the rainy season when respiratory illnesses tend to proliferate. The spectrum of common diseases during this period includes influenza, severe flu, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) leading to bronchial inflammation, bacterial pneumonia, and pulmonary edema. The transmission of these infections primarily occurs through the inhalation or contact with droplets or secretions carrying pathogens, such as nasal fluids or saliva. Dr Chonnanan, who has been deeply alarmed by the surging influenza outbreak within school communities, declared it a public health emergency. He remains on a 24-hour standby as the flu epidemic continues to escalate, with a staggering count of over ten thousand individuals falling ill. 15. The judicial court issued a six-month imprisonment and over 70,000 baht fine to a retired official, known as “Uncle Thotsaphon,” for assaulting and defaming the political leader of the Love the Nation organisation. The assault incident, which took place outside the Election Commission Office at the Government Complex Building B on 11 May, occurred after 54 year old Srisuwan Janya lodged a complaint against 67 year old Thotsaphon Thanannonsophonkul at Thungsonghong Police Station. Following the assault incident, Thotsaphon was brought before the Thungsonghong Police Station’s inquiry officer, who filed two charges against him: bodily harm and defamation. He was subsequently summoned to acknowledge the assault and defamation charges on the political leader on May 18, after which he was prosecuted at the Don Mueang District Court under Criminal Code Sections 91, 295, and 393. On October 3, the Don Mueang District Court ruled that Thotsaphon was guilty under Criminal Code Sections 295 and 393. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment and fined 20,000 baht, in accordance with Criminal Code Section 91 for causing bodily harm to another person. However, Thotsaphon confessed, which led to a reduction in the sentence by half. The court saw fit to give him a chance to reform and suspended the sentence for one year. If he fails to pay the fine, the court will proceed under Criminal Code Sections 29 and 30. By Samantha Rose Caption: Srisuwan Janya being attacked by Thotsaphon Thanannonsophonkul. Nation Thailand reports that Srettha Thavisin says an extension to the operating hours of bars, clubs and karaoke venues could help boost tourism and stimulate the local economy.
