BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Srettha Thavisin met with business leaders in Hong Kong, as he highlighted Thailand’s readiness to welcome investors and business sectors, and conveyed a message of trust and confidence in the Thai government’s preparation and willingness to offer assistance and cater to the needs of Hong Kong investors and businesses. A private sector representative Dr. Allan Zeman, Chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Group, praised Thailand’s visa-free policy for tourists. He believes that the business sector would benefit from this policy, as China is a large market for Thailand’s tourism, with more than 1.4 billion people. Meanwhile, another business representative said Hong Kong has a huge labor shortage in the medical field, thus inviting Thai doctors and experts to visit Hong Kong to share their experiences and expertise with Hong Kong medical workers, while pointing out Thailand’s internationally-recognized standards of excellence in healthcare services. The Airport Authority Hong Kong in the meantime expressed hopes that Thailand and Hong Kong would accelerate the creation of transportation connectivity to increase the number of tourists and create infrastructure connections. In response, the Thai PM agreed and said that Hong Kong Airport is considered one of the most efficient airports in the world which is a transit hub and cooperates with U-Tapao Airport. The airport is considered a memorable destination for travelers and promotes the economy through tourism. Furthermore, Hong Kong is interested in investing in Thailand, seeking the Thai government’s assistance in enhancing the Ease of Doing Business, as the country serves as the center of the CLMVT region. This presents a great opportunity to foster a growing business environment. The Thai Senate voted overwhelming today (Monday) against a police summons for Senator Upakit Pachariyangkun to acknowledge charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, following a debate in parliament after the embattled senator was given a chance to defend himself. Senator Upakit was linked to an influential Myanmar businessman, Tun Min Latt, who has close connections with the Myanmar strongman, who was arrested in Bangkok in September last year on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. Before the debate, Deputy Senate Speaker Suphachai Somcharoen informed senators about the request from the Royal Thai Police to summon Senator Upakit for questioning regarding the charges against him. He also informed senators about Section 125 of the Constitution, which prohibits the arrest or detention of a member of parliament unless there is consent from the House or the Senate. A former United Thai Nation (UTN) electoral candidate has asked former Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat to stop interfering with the government in the effort to help Thais in Israel, pointing out that it is none of his business. In his Facebook post yesterday (Sunday), in response to Pita’s offer of assistance, Shinapat Kitlertsiriwattana, former UTN candidate for Chiang Mai’s Constituency 1, said that Pita’s claim that he called the Israeli ambassador to Thailand on Saturday night, expressing his condolences for the Israeli people and offering his support for the Israeli government to ease the conflict for the safety of Thai people in Israel, will only cause confusion among the Thai people there and will not help improve the situation “because you are neither the prime minister (of Thailand) nor a party leader nor an MP and should let the government do their job.” “It is none of your business. This is not the time for fame seeking,” said Shinapat, as he advised Pita to carry on with selling dreams to the young people “until they wake up”. Remarkably, despite her son being the victim of a sickening sexual assault, the French mother had her passport confiscated after the suspect filed an assault charge against her. To add further insult to injury, the French Embassy refused to help and the Thai police urged her to drop the case. The 30 year old French mother took to Twitter (@Princessemondi2) on September 29 to recount her harrowing experience. She revealed that she works as a hairdresser and had worked hard for years to bring her seven year old child on a trip to Thailand. The French mother, named Mina, said they were enjoying the trip and everything was going well until their last day at the hotel on the island. They got up early in the morning and went to a grocery store about 10 metres from the hotel to get a coffee. When they returned to the hotel to check out, they discovered that they had left their room key in the grocery store. The boy volunteered to get it because the shop was close to the hotel. Unexpectedly, the boy returned to the hotel in shock and told his mother that a Thai man had sexually assaulted him in the shop. The boy explained that the man made the boy sit on his lap, touched his penis and forced him to touch the man’s penis. The Thai Ministry of Energy is more concerned over the prospect of a spike in global oil prices than oil supply disruption due to Israeli-Hamas war, according to Energy Permanent Secretary Prasert Sinsukprasert. He said the ministry is closely monitoring the war between Israel and Hamas, although the situation is unlikely to have direct impacts on Thailand’s oil imports. He explained that Thailand imports about 57% of its crude oil demand from other Middle Eastern countries and 33% of liquified natural gas (LNG) from other sources. Excise Dept Asked to Extend Electric Car Incentives BANGKOK (NNT) - A proposal has been raised with the Excise Department, seeking to extend the registration deadline for state-subsidized electric vehicles (EVs). BANGKOK (NNT) - A proposal has been raised with the Excise Department, seeking to extend the registration deadline for state-subsidized electric vehicles (EVs). Advisor for the development of the excise control system Nattakorn Uthainsut made the proposal to the Excise Department to amend the regulations pertaining to electric vehicle (EV) purchases. The proposal aims to extend the registration period for state-subsidized electric vehicles, offering a 150,000 THB discount per vehicle, by an additional month to January 31st, 2024, from the initial deadline of December 31st, 2023. This extension seeks to support EV sales under the EV 3.0 project in the first quarter of 2023, following the completion of the initial phase where the government allocated a fund of 3 billion baht, which expired last month. Reports emerged after the cabinet meeting on September 26th, indicating its approval of an additional budget of about one billion baht in the 2023 mid-year budget. This allocation is aimed at boosting the confidence of manufacturers who are eligible under the incentive scheme to invest in electric vehicle production in Thailand between 2024-2025. It also aims to bolster public confidence in purchasing electric vehicles. The cabinet had previously approved a 3 billion baht incentive, offering a discount of 150,000 baht per car, which supports approximately 20,000 electric vehicles. Currently, the number of individuals who have purchased electric vehicles and benefited from this scheme has surpassed initial estimates. This has prompted a request for an additional budget of 1 billion baht, as electric vehicle registration under this project has already exceeded 37,000 and could potentially rise to 50,000 vehicles. DPM Ensures Swift Constitutional Reform BANGKOK (NNT) - In a recent parliamentary session, the clarity of establishing a committee to study the approach to conducting a public referendum for constitutional amendment and the direction of constitutional changes for a new draft was questioned by the opposition. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1308529-dpm-ensures-swift-constitutional-reform/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - In a recent parliamentary session, the clarity of establishing a committee to study the approach to conducting a public referendum for constitutional amendment and the direction of constitutional changes for a new draft was questioned by the opposition. In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Phumtham Wechayachai, who is the chairman of the committee studying the approach, confirmed there is no intention to delay the process. He emphasized that the constitution involves all segments of society, so a collective agreement is essential to prevent new conflicts and ensure cautious progress. Phumtham reassured that the public would be allowed to voice their opinions, and efforts are underway to finalize the constitution as swiftly as possible. The timeline set for the completion of the new constitution that would gain acceptance across all groups in society is approximately 3 to 4 years. However, the committee is exploring ways to minimize the frequency of referendums, as each session costs between 3-4 billion baht. The government aims to hold only two referendums, although the rules could require 3-4 sessions, to reduce expenses and ensure the new constitution, except sections 1 and 2, in line with all supplementary laws before the general elections. Phumtham stated the committee would invite all political parties, both in the ruling coalition and the opposition, for their input. While the Move Forward Party, the head of the opposition, may not accept the invitation to join the committee, it doesn’t hinder the amendment process. Dialogue between parties will still be open in the future to seek collaboration from all sides. He declined to provide specifics on the elections for the constitutional drafting assembly but noted that further steps will be determined after listening to feedback from all factions. If there is a firm consensus, the government is prepared to move forward. Ultimately, the cabinet wishes the new constitution to have maximum public participation, be as democratic as possible, and achieve the best outcomes. The grim discovery was made today by Chakkraphan Sukterm, Deputy Inspector (Investigator) of Non Din Daeng Police Station. The deceased, named Thuep (surname withheld), was a volunteer elephant handler in his village. Preliminary investigations reveal that he left home on a motorcycle to search for forest goods in the large Dong forest on the morning of October 4 and then went missing. The village headman and villagers set out to look for him, suspecting he might have lost his way in the forest. Phichit Police, apprehended a 25 year old drug smuggler after he was found hiding in a marshland, having fled from authorities in northern Thailand. The drug smuggler, Natthanon, was discovered in a shivering state due to being submerged in marsh water for two days, enduring rain and cold without food. The arrest followed a significant drug seizure on October 4, in which officers confiscated 6,720,000 methamphetamine pills from a pickup truck at a traffic light intersection in Phichit province. The initial drug bust occurred during the night, with the narcotics discovered within an Isuzu pickup truck bearing the registration number 9536. Following the seizure, the suspect managed to evade capture, opting to hide within the marshland of Phichit province. This prompted a manhunt involving over 100 officers and rescue workers, which spanned two days and nights. Natthanon was eventually discovered today, around 9am, by a resident who had ventured into the marshland for fishing. On inspection, officers ascertained that the man was the same individual who had previously evaded capture during the methamphetamine seizure operation. If the past Governor doesn’t vote in your favour, just try the same requests with the new Governor. A group of beach vendors, calling for a designated area at Surin Beach, has submitted a letter to Phuket’s new governor, Sophon Suwannarat. The Phuket Express reports that 40 vendors from Surin Beach submitted their petition at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday, October 5. Sophon met with the group to take delivery of the letter, which outlines how local beach vendors have been plying their wares at Surin Beach for over 20 years. Occasionally, Chergntalay officials would collect fees from the vendors (we bet they do).
