  1. A local fortune-teller prophecised that a missing 68 year old Thai man, who mysteriously disappeared from his home in Buriram, northeast Thailand, was underwater. The local fortune-teller’s claims prompted villagers and rescue teams to search both underwater and on land. Incredibly, two days after he went missing, the man returned home unharmed, revealing that he had been sitting and sleeping under a Neem tree by a pond. He was aware people were searching for him but couldn’t alert anyone he was OK. He added it was raining when he went missing but said he did not get wet. The unusual event took place in the village of Salaosong in Buriram. According to Siam Ruam Jai Pu In United Rescue Team leader, Vorabodin Rungrojchaikul, the 68 year old Thai man, Thongmuon Prommin, mysteriously disappeared from his home on Monday, September 4. His 58 year old wife, Ratree Prommin, was certain that her husband had drowned in the village pond as the fortune-teller had predicted. However, upon inspection, no evidence, such as a cane or shoes, was found to support this claim. Despite this, to ease the villagers’ minds, a search was carried out for over two hours, but no body was found. Two days later, Ratree notified the Siam Ruam Jai Pu In United Rescue Team that her husband had returned home safely. Upon investigation, it was found that Thongmuon had been sitting under a Neem tree near the pond where villagers had been searching. Despite hundreds of people looking for him, no one saw him there, reported Sanook. 3. A woman tragically lost her life to a mysterious gunshot while she was fishing with her husband and a friend near a rice field in the Isaan province of Buriram. The 29 year old woman, named Bee, died at Laharn Sai Hospital after she was shot near her breast in a rice field on Tuesday, September 5. Bee’s husband, 25 year old Pornthap, and his friend, 24 year old Pittaya, were unable to determine the identity of the gunman or the direction from where the gunshot originated. Pornthep explained that the trio had ventured to a neighbouring rice field at around 7pm in search of shells and fish. They had set up camp in a nearby cottage belonging to the rice field owner. As Pornthap kindled a bonfire, and Pittaya cast his line near the cottage, Bee embarked into the rice field with a flashlight to gather shells. Pornthep said his wife suddenly screamed for help. He thought she was bitten by a snake and rushed to her assistance. Pornthep discovered a gunshot wound near her breast and rushed her back home on his motorcycle, from where his friend rushed her to the hospital. Pornthep pointed out that he spotted two flashlights before the shooting occurred but did not know whether it was involved in the shooting or not. He could not figure out the motive of the shooting as the wife did not have a conflict with anyone. Furthermore, Pornthap insisted that the owner of the rice field and the cottage could not have been involved, as they had visited the spot several times without any prior complaints. 5. Kalasin’s Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office swiftly came to the aid of locals trapped by flash floods, stuck to trees for up to 14 hours in northeastern Thailand. The local government, led by Thanaset Chaisongkramthanatat, the Mayor of Kuchinarai, called on officials to stay alert and assist affected citizens. Ongoing rainfall has already resulted in flash floods across four districts, significantly impacting agricultural areas and submerging roads. The rescue operation was launched after a local, 39 year old Thongchai Prakop Saeng, was discovered clinging to a tree in the middle of a flooded paddy field in Bua Khao, Kuchinarai, Kalasin. Thongchai had been stranded for over 14 hours after being swept away by the flash floods while riding his motorcycle home from his paddy field. His calls for help went unanswered until the following morning when another local spotted him and alerted the authorities. As the rain continues to fall across various parts of Kalasin, flash floods continue to inundate agricultural lands, particularly those near the Phu Phan mountains. According to the latest information from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, floods have affected four districts and five subdistricts, primarily impacting rice farming areas and disrupting road transport, reported KhaoSod. The affected areas include the Bua Khao subdistrict in the Kuchinarai district, where flooded paddy fields are still prevalent. In Huai Phueng district, floodwaters have engulfed a 200-metre stretch of Highway 12 between Ban Huai Phueng and Ban Non Sam Khwan, with water levels reaching 30 centimetres. In this area, only large vehicles can pass. Huai Phueng district officials, led by district chief Chanyut Butwong, have initiated a water drainage plan. 9. A drunk woman set fire to her 73 year old mother at a house in the Nong Hong district in Isaan province of Buriram after her mum urged her and her husband to stop drinking. The victim, 73 year old Preeda, revealed to Nong Hong District Office authorities that her 40 year old daughter, La, was the perpetrator. La poured gasoline over her body and set her ablaze on Tuesday, September 5. She ran out of the house and jumped into a small canal nearby to extinguish the flames before seeking assistance from an abbot. District officials yesterday visited the community to question witnesses to place charges against La. The abbot, Thongchai Kittitaro, revealed to officers that he heard a woman screaming for help in front of his accommodation and rushed out to check. He saw Preeda sitting on her knees and crying for help. Thonchai said the scorched wounds covered Preeda’s back, face, and arms. 13. A Malaysian tourist recently shared a harrowing experience while travelling in Bangkok, accusing a Thai ride-hailing driver of attempting to kidnap him and his four friends for a human trafficking gang. The Malaysian tourist, who goes by the name Andrew Tong on Facebook, recounted this life-changing experience. According to Tong, the incident unfolded on their final day in Bangkok as they were en route to Don Mueang International Airport on Tuesday, September 5. According to a report on the Singaporean news agency, Must Share News, Tong revealed that he booked a ride to the airport via an application called inDrive. From the screenshot shared in the post, the ride started from the Ascella Bangkok Hotel in the Phaya Thai neighbourhood of the capital, and the destination was Don Mueang Airport. The trip started at 7am. The car that arrived to pick them up was a four-door pickup that seemed perfectly ordinary. However, they started noticing many strange things when they were in the car. Firstly, the car windows would not open and the driver was distracted, talking to someone on the phone all the time they were in the car. As one of the tourists could understand the Thai language, the group knew that the phone call’s subject matter consistently revolved around their presence. Tong told his friends that the driver was talking about them to someone on the phone. The driver told the person on the other end of the phone how many of them there were, their genders, and other details. 16. The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) is preparing to discuss new economic challenges such as the influx of Chinese merchandise. The committee aims to formulate a fresh economic proposal for the Srettha Thavisin Pheu Thai Party-led government. The subjects are set to be discussed in the committee’s today’s meeting. The JSCCIB intends to confer with the new administration on strategies to combat these economic issues and how the government can provide more efficient support to the business sector, said Kriengkrai Thiennukul, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), a principal member of the JSCCIB. “We are keen to include the issue of Chinese goods inflow in the proposal since an increase in imports could impact local businesses, primarily small and medium-sized enterprises.” Kriengkrai highlighted the rising trend of inexpensive Chinese product imports, which could potentially disturb the trade equilibrium between Thailand and China, reported Bangkok Post. The JSCCIB is also set to reconsider its growth and inflation predictions in response to changing economic conditions during the Thursday meeting. However, despite export figures remaining subdued for several months, the committee anticipates retaining its 2023 export forecast. The JSCCIB had previously reduced its export prediction to -2% for the year, a drop from -1%. The committee’s most optimistic export scenario is zero growth. The Excise Department is preparing a proposal to reduce diesel tax by 2 baht per litre and aiming to lower the retail price of diesel to less than 30 baht per litre according to the newly formed government. The proposal is in the pipeline following Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s announcement to slash the retail price of diesel to 30 baht per litre from the current cap of 32 baht per litre. The Excise Department is currently preparing data on diesel tax reduction to present to the Ministry of Finance and the prime minister. Initial discussions indicate a proposal to reduce the diesel tax by 2 baht per litre from the current 6 baht per litre, in accordance with government policy. However, this will require consultation with the Ministry of Energy and the Oil Fuel Fund Office regarding the application of the reduced tax, such as whether it would be used to reduce the retail price of fuel for the public or to offset the burden on the Oil Fund.
