BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited Muang Thai Phatra Market in Bangkok on August 31 to gain firsthand insight into the cost of living and food prices. Engaging with street food vendors, Srettha inquired about the expenses associated with running their businesses, including ingredient costs, cooking oil, and cooking gas prices. The new premier assured the vendors that he would address the challenges of rising prices and inflation as soon as he officially takes office. During his visit, Srettha interacted with market-goers to understand their most pressing concerns. The majority of individuals highlighted the escalating cost of living, particularly in relation to public utility prices. The prime minister expressed his intention to discuss electricity prices in the first Cabinet meeting, aiming to potentially reduce the rates within four months of assuming office. Traveling by subway to the market, Srettha was accompanied by senior party members expected to join his Cabinet. He interacted with commuters and admirers along the way. Srettha’s market visit had a primary goal of collecting firsthand information and perspectives related to the economic difficulties that the public is currently encountering. As he nears the formal commencement of his tenure, tackling the issue of increasing living expenses emerges as one of his immediate focal points. BOT Reviews 10,000-Baht Digital Handout Plan BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand (BOT) is reviewing the new government’s financial policies, particularly the Pheu Thai Party’s proposed 10,000-baht digital handout scheme, which could contribute to around 3 percent of GDP growth next year. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand (BOT) is reviewing the new government’s financial policies, particularly the Pheu Thai Party’s proposed 10,000-baht digital handout scheme, which could contribute to around 3 percent of GDP growth next year. BOT’s Economic and Policy Department Director Sakkapop Panyanukul said that the central bank is waiting for further details about the handout scheme and other key financial policies before making a financial forecast of the Thai economy next year. However, based on a one-time cash transfer multiplier model, the central bank predicts that the scheme will require a total budget of about 500 billion baht, which will add around 3% to GDP growth in 2024. Sakkapop stated that the central bank might revise its 2023 growth forecast to 3.6% due to the global economic slowdown and China’s slow recovery. However, despite the contraction in Thai exports for the second quarter of this year, domestic demand has been increasing and could support economic growth alongside the revitalization of the tourism sector. He added that even though the consumer sentiment index for August was lower than for July because of concerns about the formation of a new government, the index should improve for the next three months after the new government is established. The director stated that the number of foreign tourists continued to rise after seasonal adjustments, which boosted activity in the service industry. Foreign arrivals surged to 2.49 million in July, up from 2.24 million the previous month, primarily due to tourists from China, Malaysia, Europe, and Russia. The central bank previously forecast a 3.8 percent growth for 2024. One of the mega projects being inherited by the new government from the Prayut administration is the land bridge, intended to facilitate the movement of cargo containers and oil from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand and to destinations beyond Thailand, as an alternative to the busy Strait of Malacca. The Prayut administration has painted a rosy picture of this mega project, a new alternative to the Kra Canal project, which has laid dormant for several decades. It hopes that construction of the project can commence in 2025 and be completed in four years. Opponents of the project, especially among conservationist groups, have doubts that it is worth the massive investment, estimated at about one trillion baht, and question from where the investment money will come. Residents of Nong Kok village in Surin province have expressed their complaints regarding a nearby pig farm that has been emitting extremely unpleasant smells for over two decades. The foul-smelling situation has resulted in recurrent visits to the hospital due to health problems. Despite making numerous appeals to the appropriate authorities, no measures have been implemented, giving rise to suspicions of influential interference and prompting a call for government intervention. The pig farm, located at the heart of the community, has been in operation for over 20 years and spans a distance greater than 2 kilometres. The stench emanating from the pig waste spreads throughout the community, causing residents to suffer frequent health issues and hospital visits. Despite complaints to the local municipality, the problem remains unresolved. Moreover, complaints about the pig farm often result in verbal abuse from disgruntled farm owners. Upon investigation at Nong Kok village, more than 10 villagers and officers from the Prasat Police Station were found waiting near the pig farm, which is situated central to the village and adjacent to the main road. The large-scale pig farm consists of three long interconnected barns, stretching over 200 metres, reported KhaoSod. Any attempt to address the farm owner was met with hostility and dissatisfaction. The issue was brought to the attention of the local media and police, in hopes that dialogue could be established with the pig farm owner. However, the situation remained unchanged, as the owner, also a former mayor, is believed to wield substantial local influence. The Colonel revealed to the Pattaya News that the police force had been alerted to the disturbance caused by a party at a pool villa in M.4. The incident took place yesterday at the girl’s home in Kut Nok Plao Subdistrict. The cat, a female white and brown tabby, defended its young owner by standing guard over the snake and raising the alarm, causing the girl to wake up in shock and run out of the room. The girl, known as Kaimuk, was at home with only her elderly grandfather as her parents were out working. While she was asleep in her bedroom, a black cobra appeared by her bed. The cat, seeing the threat, jumped towards the snake, hissing loudly. On seeing the snake, the girl quickly fled the room and called her parents for help. Upon their return, the parents found the snake ready to strike at the cat, which stood its ground fearlessly. The cobra managed to spit venom at the cat, which hit its eyes, causing the cat to flee the room. The parents quickly closed the door, trapping the snake inside, and called the Saraburi Reptile Rescue Team. The officials found the cobra near a blanket by the little girl’s bed. They used a metal hook to try and capture the snake. It managed to evade capture at first, spitting venom at the rescue team. It then slithered under the blanket where the rescue team finally managed to capture it.
